Markets continued to witness a style rotation away from defensive stocks into more cyclical and economically-sensitive equities. A convincing UK general election result also helped European equity markets ended the year strongly. The fund concentrates on stocks with attractive risk-return profiles as identified by a systematic investment process which is based on four factors: Earnings Momentum, Price Momentum, Quality and Value. This approach can lead to active positions relative to the benchmark. During the fourth quarter, the portfolio underperformed its reference index. While Value contributed positively to performance, Earnings Momentum hurt. In a strongly rising market environment, the fund’s overweight in smaller sized companies helped. At the same time, the defensive portfolio positioning hurt the relative performance. Underweights in companies from the IT and materials sectors had the largest negative impact. From a country perspective, effects from underweights in France and Germany were compensated by overweights in Scandinavian companies.
