The first quarter of 2018 saw the return of significant volatility with global markets experiencing their biggest swings in over a year. After delivering positive returns for most of January, global equities sold off sharply in February. Through the remainder of the quarter, equity markets struggled to regain their momentum, hampered by global trade tensions and weakness in global technology stocks. In this environment, the fund outperformed its reference benchmark primarily due to stock selection and overweight exposure in the internet & direct marketing retail industry. An overweight to the software industry added to relative return as well. In contrast, stock selection in the biotechnology industry was a notable detractor from relative performance. We attempt to harness multi-year secular trends, which should benefit long-term investors regardless of near-term economic strength. Current areas of emphasis are those expected to take market share from mature technology, including the game-changing technologies of mobile, security, cloud and biopharmaceutical. We remain optimistic about prospects for IT spending and believe the increased pace of healthcare innovation will continue to drive long-term earnings growth within the sector.
