WelcomeInvernessBookFestival 2014

to the 10th Inverness Book Festival, the second in association withSandstone Press.

We have a great line up this year with our subjects ranging from theAntarctic withGavin Francis to 20th Century IrelandwithMan Bookershortlisted SebastianBarry. We have Tartan Noir withLouiseWelsh andDoug Johnstone andwe visit 1970s Chicago and beyondwithBonnie Greer.The timing of the festival lends itself perfectly to delve into the independencereferendumdebate withRobert Crawford and IainMacWhirter. Ouragent-in-residence this year is Isobel Dixon of Blake Friedmann. As wellas being an agent, Isobel is also an accomplished andmuch published poet.

For the first timewewill be hosting an evening of Gaelic language books,organised by the Gaelic Books Council and two important events for youngreaders sponsored by Publishing Scotland.

Plus, we have the No 1 international bestselling authorKateMosse joiningus at the Big Book Group event.

Douglas Thompson’s short stories have appeared in awide range ofmagazines and anthologies. His firstbook,Ultrameta, was published by Eibonvale Press inAugust 2009, nominated for the Edge Hill Prize andshortlisted for the British Fantasy Society BestNewcomer Award. Since then he has published foursubsequent novels. The Brahan Seer is his sixth novel.

PatrickWatt’s Steel and Tartan charts theadventures of the 4th Camerons from theirtraining with the Highland Division throughthe winter of 1914 to their eventualbreak-up inMarch 1916. During their yearin France, the Battalion saw action in fivemajor engagements at the Battles ofNeuve Chapelle, Aubers Ridge, Festubert,Givenchy and the Battle of Loos.

Using unpublished diaries, letters andmemoirs together with photographs andnewspaper accounts, PatrickWatt tellstheir story.

Beginning with the Battle of Bannockburn in1314, when the Scots defeated the English andcontinuing up to the present day, Robert Crawford’sBannockburns explores the literary-culturalbackground to Scottish nationalism in the lead-upto the independence referendum.

Robert examines howwriters have set out inpoetry, fiction, plays and on film the ideal ofScottish independence. This is the only book to setout in full what Scottish independence hasmeantin literature and it shows how, even after 700years, the Battle of Bannockburn remains a keyreference point.
