We have now secured the full approval of Inverclyde Council for the Scheme of Establishment and as such will be able to move forward with a degree of confidence. As indicated previously there are still a few posts outstanding in the management struc-

ture and hopefully this will be resolved in the very near future.

The fuller establishment of the CHCP governance arrangements can now be progressed with the formation of the new CHCP Committee with its new structure and membership. This Committee will form the bridge between the parent organisations in the CHCP and will hold significant responsibilities for the direction of our joint service development. It is important that we all realise the importance of the influencing factors of the Com-mittee through representation from elected members, non-executive directors of the board, and those representatives of the professional groups, staff and the users of our services through the Public Partnership Forum representative. I hope that we can all

support this positive and exciting commitment.

It is important also that we acknowledge the good work carried out by the previous CHP Committee, which met for the last time on the 6th October. The work carried out by the members of the Committee and the management team of the CHP in conjunc-tion with wider staff and professional support formed the solid foundation of joint work-ing and engagement in the community planning process which affords us the opportu-

nity to ensure the success of our new enhanced partnership.

The next few months will be a period of change with new management teams form-ing and planned accommodation moves particularly for the senior management team as we develop the CHCP identity and profile in Inverclyde. This may be a period which could engender some concern and anxiety for staff as they meet new managers from differing backgrounds. I would re-emphasise the view that we will do all that is possible not to cause serious disruption for frontline services, and that mangers will be sensi-tive to the concerns of staff and the public. This can best be achieved if we all make the necessary effort to maintain our professional integrity and work together with respect and dignity to ensure the best outcome for those members of the community we serve and as part of this for ourselves, as staff, within the new CHCP.

This is the first Christmas in my role as Corporate Director for the CHCP. The past year has been a period of change and transition which no doubt has impacted on all of us to some extent. I myself have found the progress towards the CHCP to have been frus-trating, tense, challenging though exciting and positive. This has been mainly due to the continued support I have received from staff and colleagues. Over this season of the year there is always a feeling of well being and of hope, a time for reflection and of joy. I wish all staff in the CHCP a very happy Christmas for 2010, and I look forward to us developing a CHCP which will encapsulate these feelings of goodwill not just for the season but for the future.

Happy Christmas to all. Have a good, enjoyable, healthy and careful time!

FosteringWithin Inverclyde we have a committed and enthusias-tic group of foster carers who work hard to provide high quality care to children who cannot live within their own families either for a short period or for the rest of their childhoods. In April 2010 we introduced a new scheme of allowances and fees which will provide a generous pack-age of financial support for foster carers.

The new scheme aims to establish a career path with the opportunity for training to develop skills and gain quali-fications. We hope that this might attract people with relevant qualifications and experience to think about

finding about more about fostering.

We are also seeking adoptive families for children who need the legal security that this offers and supported carers to provide a room and helping hand to young people who are leaving care.

To this end we are launching a major recruitment campaign in the area in January 2011. Posters are being placed in all public buildings, notices are appearing in churches, leaf-lets are being put in schoolbags, adverts are appearing in the local Press and there will be stall in the Oak Mall.

If you are interested in finding out more please phone Janet Smith on 01475 714038, look at Inverclyde’s website or e-mail: [email protected]

Just before the CHP moved to a CHCP, we successfully achieved the Bronze Award for Healthy Working Lives. Inverclyde Council has already achieved the Gold Award, but we are not content to just ride on that success. We would like the CHCP to work to achieve the Silver and then Gold award, and are now about to embark upon our programme of events for the Silver Award with a launch event be held in the Tontine Hotel on Tuesday 25th January 2011, from 11am to 2pm. This will kick off a new phase in the CHCP’s goal to continuously promote a healthy lifestyle to its employees.

Overall we want to promote anything that will contribute towards positive mental health and wellbeing of our staff. Even if you have already been part of the events within the Council to reach Silver and Gold, you should still get involved and have some fun. We would be happy to learn from what you have done before, or work with any new ideas you might have.

The Silver award is packed full of interesting topic areas such as Healthy Eating, Physical Activity, Alcohol & Drugs, the Environment and many more.If you are interested in any of the above topic areas then why not join the dedi¬cated and friendly team – we would love some fresh faces and ideas to join our working group!

So if you would like to join the group or contribute your ideas, please do not hesitate in contacting Sara Maclean, Health Improvement Practitioner on 01475 506018 or by email: [email protected]

Public Partnership Forum: Where have we been and what have we been involved in?

The Public Partnership Forum (PPF) is beginning to explore our role within the new CHCP and in representing the wider communities. We will continue to be present at the CHCP Committee and at a wide variety of events including those organised by the Scottish Health Council (SHC).

Recently we have been involved with the following;

• CHPDevelopmentPlan–weweregiventheopportunitytofeedbackourthoughtson the content of the plan and what we thought was achievable, our comments have been taken into account.

• ComplaintsprocessinInverclydeforbothPrimaryCare&Acute-HelenGourlayfrom Independent Advice & Support Service (IASS) hosted an information session to discuss the service they provide. As a result several actions were taken forward from IASS which would improve their service.

• WehavebeenaskedtoworkwiththeCHCPwithregardstothecontentoftheSolus screens in GP Practices. Several issues were raised and as a result have now been dealt with which resulted in better communication for service users.

• KevinHutchison,HealthImprovementOfficerfortheCHCPandwiderCouncilat-tended a PPF meeting to deliver a presentation on the ‘Active Living Strategy’. This gen-erated good debate and very positive feedback, and from that a strong link has been createdwithKevin.

• AnnualReview1stNovember-TheScottishGovernment’sAnnualReviewofNHSGreaterGlasgowandClydewillbechairedbyNicolaSturgeonMSP,DeputyFirstMinis-ter and Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing. Members of the PPF were invited to attend and observe the event. The final 30 minutes of the event will be given over to questions from members of the public in the audience.

How do i find out more?

We are committed to involving the public and engaging with the local community. We want patients, carers, members of the public and community and voluntary organisa-tions to have a voice in the design of local services.

Clinical governance – A Helping Hand

Do you or your staff need help with an audit, service evaluation or patient involvement? Don’t know where to turn?

Philip O’Hare is the person to speak to. As Clinical Effectiveness Coordinator for Inverclyde CHCP, it is Philip’s job to ensure that health staff get all the help and advice they need to carry out Clinical Govern-ance such as clinical audits and service evaluations. Philip also works closely with the Patient Involve-ment Facilitator and Clinical Risk Coordinator to help staff with patient involvement and risk management. Philip can also help with creating data collection forms and databases as well as analysing data and creating reports.

Even if you don’t need this help, but are carrying out clinical governance activities, Philip would like to hear from you to get an idea of what activity is going on within Inverclyde. Philip also collects this information for inclusion in the annual Clinical Governance report.

If you or your team are carrying out any clinical governance work, or require any help, you can contact Philip on 0141 314 4237 or at philip.o’[email protected]

WilliAm (Billy) irvine 1945-2010

The staff at Greenock Health Centre were saddened by the loss of their colleague Billy Irvine, who passed away on Tuesday 19October 2010.

Billy worked as a Porter for 18 years at the Health Centre where he was well liked and appreciated by the staff, patients and visitors alike.

We enjoyed his good sense of humour and although he would wind up the staff, he could also laugh at himself when things did not go his way. When things were not going so well for others he would always find some words of encouragement.

Billy enjoyed his work even though it involved having to travel by two buses from the top of Port Glasgow to get there. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him, both inside and outside the Health Centre. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife and family.

Working Health services (Fit for work programme)

Working Health Services is a pilot telephone case management service. It was developed following recommendations made in Dame Carol Black’s review (The Health of Britain’s Working Age Population). This service was launched in March 2010 with funding from the Scottish Government and the DWP. This service was developed to target small-medium sized enterprises with no access to an occupational health service. Service provision is short-term with individuals remain-

ing on case loads for ap-proximately twelve weeks or less depending on need. The aim is to provide speedy ac-cess to appropriate service providers i.e. physiotherapy, counselling, occupational therapy etc and to signpost customers on to relevant community agencies. Occu-pational health advisors are also available (through the Scottish Centre for Healthy Working Lives) and work-place assessments can be completed in order to en-sure safety at work and best practice for the individual.

Organisational Skills Training – Time Management Solutions

One of the items on the agenda for a recent Health Improvement Team meeting was a presentation on Organisational Skills by Pamela Robb from Roxburgh House. A new way of working was the carrot dangled before the team which would ensure that work was task-orientated rather than being dominated by the influx of emails that are re-ceived daily.

There is a lot more to Outlook than meets the eye and Pamela took the team through the various aspects of:

• TimeManagement• TaskManagement• DailyPlans• 4DFormula• BringForwardSystem• PreparingforMeetings• YourSignature• CleanDesks

The team was impressed and were keen to get started on the new system straight away. Thanks Pamela!

message in a Bottle

Message in a Bottle is a voluntary scheme intended for use by anyone who feels vulner-able while living at home. The scheme provides emergency services with vital details of any illness or allergy that the person may have. Also providing details of emergency contact and also details of anyone that they may care for.

Message in a Bottle is recognised by all emergency services. The scheme works by the person storing their details in the plastic container which is kept in their fridge. It is im-portant to keep these details up to date. Two small stickers, unique to this scheme, and known to the emergency services and other caring agencies are to be placed within yourhouse–onetoyourfridgedoorandtheotherINSIDEyourfrontdoor.Makingsurethis cannot be seen from outside.

some tips for a healthier Xmas• Opt for a healthy starter

Try a light starter of vegetable sticks with low fat dips or why not make your own soup with seasonal vegetables and help reach your 5-a-day.

• Go skinless!

Turkey is low in fat and a good source of protein, but remember to remove the skin before eating and help cut back on your fat intake. Let the fat run off! When roasting your meat or turkey use a metal rack or trivet to allow the fat to drain off. Don’t use this fat to roast your potatoes!!! • Go chunky

Cut potatoes into larger chunks to stop them absorbing as much fat and roast them in a small amount of unsaturated oil like olive oil or sunflower oil.

• Have a fruity stuffing

Make stuffing using dried fruit like dried apricots or cranberries or chestnuts rather than a pork based one.

• Pile on the veg

Serve up lots of different vegetables (steam, microwave or boil where possible) and flavour with fresh herbs, spices or lemon juice rather than butter or salt.

• Make your own gravy

You could make your own gravy with the water you boiled your veg in rather than using stock cubes or granules which tend to be high in salt.

• Switch your milk

Make bread sauce healthier by using skimmed or semi-skimmed milk rather than full fat milk. Or have a dollop of cranberry sauce instead.

• Ditch the brandy butter

Serve Christmas pudding with natural yogurt or reduced fat cus-tard rather than brandy butter or cream and help lower your calo-rie intake. Or for a lighter option have a fresh fruit salad instead.

• Watch your portion sizes

Don’t pile food high on your plate and if you feel full pass the extra spoonful or second mince pie.

• Go easy on the booze

Try alternating alcoholic drinks with water or fruit juice and keep within sensible limits (no more than 3-4 units a day for men and no more than 2-3 units a day for women).

• Boots on

Get your family and friends involved and walk off those extra calories before or after Christmas dinner. One mile - approximately 2,000 steps - can use up 100 calo-ries and helps to keep your heart healthy.

• Go low

It can be difficult to avoid fatty foods at this time of year, but try and choose low fat healthy options like lean meats and raw vegetables at the buffet table. • Cut down A level teaspoon of salt equals the recommended daily maximum of six grams, so go easy with the salty snacks and nibbles

• Chill out

It is important to set aside time for yourself. Plan when you can do something that you find relaxing and enjoyable like a leisurely soak in the bath, spending time with friends or listening to music.
