IntroductionOneofthemostfundamentalandcrucialquantitiesforaccurateprecipitationretrievalsisthesingle-scatteringproperty(SSP)ofeachindividualhydrometeorintheprecipitatingvolume. Thus,animportantstepinminimizingretrievaluncertaintyistoensurethattheparticlesusedforsingle-scatteringcalculationsresemblethosethatoccurinnature,allowingtheSSPstobecomputedpreciselywithnumericaltechniques.
Hydrometeorswithrotationalsymmetry(axialsymmetry)aremostefficientlycomputedusingtheT-Matrixmethods.Forhydrometeorswithauniformdielectric,theExtendedBoundaryConditionMethod(EBCM)isthemostefficient.However,formixed-phasehydrometeorswithnon-uniformdielectricsEBCMisnotapplicable.Inthesecases,wecanusetheInvariantImbeddedT-Matrix(IITM),whichwedevelopedforthispurpose.ItisalsonotedthathydrometeorswithmoreextremeaspectratioscanbecomputedwithIITMthanEBCMandthatsuchhydrometeorsarefoundinprecipitatingsystems.Forhydrometeorswithoutanyrotationalsymmetry,however,volumeintegralmethodslikeDiscreteDipoleApproximation(DDA)andtheMethodofMoments(MoM)mustbeemployed.
