This one day course focuses on the basic aspects of geology important for petroleum systems. The morning covers geology - what it is and what it can do with reference to the hydrocarbon industry: rock types and their properties, structure and tectonics of classic systems, unconventionals and non-sedimentary reservoirs. In the afternoon these geological concepts and theories will be applied through practical exercises to petroleum data through an invesigative approach. The concept of a play and geological exploration and production challenges will be introduced through this practical exploration. A fully illustrated course workbook will be provide, including a glossary/jargon buster section.

TurnstoneIntroductory Geology -for non-geologists

A days introduction to geology for non-geologists working in the petroleum industry.

Introductory Geology - for non-geologists

TECHNICAL CONTENTThe course consists of a 1 day workshop for non-geologists working in the petroleum sector. The course is designedto provide a basic background and understanding of geology and geological processes that are of relevance to thepetroleum industry.

AM - Geology - in the morning we focus on basic geology and concepts, including reviewing the main rock types andtheir physical properties, the structure and tectonics of classic systems, and a brief look at unconventionals and non-sedimentary reservoirs.

PM - Practical Application - in the afternoon we will take the concepts and theory developed in the morning and apply them to some practical exercises using petroleum industry data. The concept of a play and geological exploration and production challenges will be explored.

LOGISTICSThe course will be based at the University of Aberdeen. Lunches, coffees and teas will be provided.

COSTThe registration rate for this one day course is £500 (+ VAT) per person.

MEET THE TUTORSProfessor Rob Butler has over 30 years experience in teaching and researching the structural geoogy of sedimentary basins, with over 100 publications, chiefly on fault systems. He hasworked extensively on the structural geology of northern Scotland and delivered trainingto a variety of oil and gas companies both in the UK and overseas.Dr Dave Healy has a decade’s experience in developing understanding of fault mechanics, especially quantifying the processes by which deformation localizes in rocks. He has published extensively on fault zones, their structural damage and the implications for fluid behavoiur in deformed rocks.

ABOUT TURNSTONETurnstone provides focussed technical training in subsurface geoscience to industry, delivered bythe Department of Geology and Petroleum Geology at the University of Aberdeen. It builds upon our long record of graduate level teaching in the oil and gas sector, excellent research and professional training. Funds generated by Turnstone are reinvested in training and research.

Turnstone Professional Geoscience Training at the University of Aberdeen

Dr Clare Bond has combined a career in academia and industry, working as a structuraI geologist in research and consulting roles. Clare’s research interests include uncertainty in seismic interpretation and fault and fracture influence on sub-surface reservoirs.Dr David Iacopini is a structural geologist and applied geophysicist. David’s current research addresses seismic imaging fault and thrust tectonic structures as well as reservoir characterization using seismic attributes.
