Get the audiences attention Introduce what you will be speaking about
General Introduce your purpose statement and
several related points you intend to speak about
Purpose statement? Remember: “What you want the listeners
to learn or do once they have heard the information.”
Anecdote Begin by telling a breif, true story that
relates to your speech
Example: How I learned to snowboard
Statistic Begin by quoting startling or interesting
numbers related to your speech
Example: 7/10 people don’t floss!
Question Begin by asking an
important question Answer the question
within your speech
Example: Have you ever been unable to change a flat tire on your bike?
Current Event Begin by referring
to well-known recent events that related to your speech
Example: With today’s student elections...
Quote Begin with a famous or compelling
quote that relates to your speech
Example: John McEnroe, the six time Wimbledon Champion said, “A strong backhand is to winning tennis matches.”
What If? Begin by having the
audience imagine themselves in a situation that relates to your speech
Example: Imagine your home alone and suddenly the power goes out. What will you do?

introduction some way
Don’t have to state “in conclusion” try out some other transition words
Example: If you used an anecdote in the introduction refer back to it in the conclusion
