INTRODUCTION Unlike the skills of speaking and listening which are acquired almost subconsciously, the reading skill has to be taught. Reading is a complex mental activity which was once thought of as being a passive process. This, of course, been rejected and today reading is viewed an active mental process as the reader interacts with the text and derives meaning from print. This module, TSL3106 – Teaching Reading Skills and Vocabulary in the Primary ESL Classroom is a compilation of eight topics, (as listed below) written specifically for the 3-credit hour weekly learning module for the PPG programme. (I) Introduction to Reading in the Primary School (II) Theoretical Models of Reading (III) Reading Skills in the Malaysian Primary School English Language Curriculum (IV) Stages of a Reading Comprehension Lesson (V) Techniques for Teaching Vocabulary (VI) Techniques for Assessing Reading Skills and Vocabulary (VII) Enrichment and Remedial Reading Activities (VIII) Lesson planning for Lower Primary and Upper Primary These topics are spread across five interactive sessions. In topic 1, you will learn the definitions surrounding reading, identify the different moments in the primary reading context and understand better the key concepts and issues related to exploring factors that influence reading readiness. In topic 2, you will explore the different theoretical models of reading and how to link theory with practical applications in the ESL classroom. Activities to consider include, sight words, language learning experience and phonics. v

INTRODUCTION

Topic 5, describes techniques to vocabulary acquisition in the Malaysian primary school and provides key suggestions on selecting and adapting activities to increase students’ lexical knowledge.

In topic 6, you will explore student-based formative and summative assessment theory to effectively evaluate reading and vocabulary acquisition. An alternative assessment is also introduced.

Topic 7 deals with the concepts of enrichment and remedial reading. Some suggested activities are also listed.

In topic 8, you will look at lesson planning for a reading lesson in relation to the Malaysian primary school English curriculum.

Topic 9 deals with micro-teaching. Some principles of micro-teaching will be discussed before you conduct your own micro-teaching.

By going through all the sessions diligently and doing the tasks given, you will be able to enhance your knowledge in the teaching of reading.

There are no prescribed course books and the sessions are designed to be self-contained. However, we do recommend that you should have access to certain references and dictionary.

You should read the input notes carefully. You should also do all the tutorial tasks and then discuss with your tutors during the face-to-face interaction.
