Introduction: Training Scale Everything that you learn in dressage can be categorized to a part of the “training scale”.

The fundamental sequence of this scale is very constant throughout most training methods, countries and trainers.

In the following pages you will read in more detail all about the training scale.

Dressage training is like a puzzle. With the young horse, the pieces are all scattered around in front of you. As with any puzzle, you start with the four corner pieces around which the rest of the puzzle is built. For the dressage horse, the four corners are:

!! Forward from the legs !! Equal positive contact in both reins !! Rider sitting in balance !! Control of the quarters and shoulders

The rest of the pieces of the puzzle cannot be in position without these four corner pieces in place. You can’t use a hammer to force a piece into place – it either fits, or it does not. Once the four fundamentals are established, only then can the pieces for engagement, collection, further suppleness, and ultimately Grand Prix be included. Rhythm - to maintain regularity in all gaits both on straight and

curved lines. Once you feel that you can safely keep a rhythm, then part of your training can include trying to alter the tempo, making things faster and slower - but this is only acceptable as training when it happens under your control.

This is called tempo control and it works on the principle that any gait in any dressage movement should theoretically be able to be sped up, or slowed down.

The concept of tempo control only really applies to horses that have a comfortable understanding of the rhythm required for each gait.

Relaxation/Suppleness – to establish relaxation of the horse both

mentally and physically. A mental relaxation of a horse is one that shows no anxiety or tension. Clear

signs of anxiety or tension are mouth problems, aggressive tail swishing or an obvious resistance to the riders aids.

Relaxation often displays as a physical looseness of the horse to work through its entire body, showing no signs of tension or resistance. True suppleness will appear like the horse is ‘swinging’ and flowing through its body and not just moving its legs.

Contact/Connection – to create a comfortable steady contact to both

reins This is where the horse displays a positive tension in the reins, while having a respectful submissiveness to every rein aid.

The horse, however, must be round in its frame and body and working ‘over the back’.

Connection refers to the connection developed from the hind legs, over the back to the hand and should give the appearance that the horse is moving as one, not appearing to be moving in parts.

Impulsion/Energy – is the forward desire of the horse to move

energetically forward in all gaits without becoming fast.

It is a forward thinking state of mind producing an active energy in all four legs, particularly from the horse’s hindquarter.

Impulsion can be created by many things, e.g. the horse gets a fright or it becomes fresh at a show or on a trail ride, but it is only useful in dressage when it can be created by the rider from the driving aids, i.e. the rider’s lower legs placed on the girth.

The horse must respond to the driving aids immediately, showing a respectful reaction to the rider’s driving aids.

This development of impulsion will come through the tempo control exercises. Working with and developing the “gears within each gait”.

Straightness/Balance – is measured by

the footfalls of the horse and should be aligned by the inside front

and hind feet. On a straight line the horse should be straight, but on a curved line the horse must display flexion and bend to match the arc of the curve.

If the horse cannot maintain straightness by nature, it must understand some basic lateral exercises, i.e. shoulder in, travers, renvers and leg yield, to enable it to be straightened by the rider in all gaits.

Balance refers to the equal distribution of weight over all four feet, leg and right, in all gaits and on straight and curved lines.

As training progresses towards collection, the center of balance should shift slightly back within the horse’s body towards the hind legs.

Collection – is the combination of all facets of the training scale and is

the development of an upward self carriage of the horse

Commonly described as an ‘uphill’ way of going. It is created by the hind legs of the horse having greater bend in all joints and stepping further forward underneath its body to become more load bearing, allowing the horse to move the center of balance back through its body, taking weight off the forehand. The horse will then start to carry itself in front with its poll becoming the highest point. If done correctly and ridden from the hind legs through to the hand, the collected paces should show an enhancement of the natural gaits where the horse appears to be lighter on its feet and moving in an effortless cadence.

Introduction to Lateral Movements

No exercises should be introduced until the horse is on the aids and going forwards with equal acceptance of both reins, in straight lines, and on a circle. In the beginning this can be your entire session – forwards and back with the tempo until it looks as though all the rider had to do was breathe out for the horse to shoot forwards and breathe in for it to come back. The reward for your horse is a relaxation of the aids within the movement and the goal is to have the horse on the aids, without tension, in self carriage. Once this is achieved throughout various gears within the pace, then and only then can the movements be added

The movements in dressage all have a purpose. They are there to help improve the horse’s suppleness, his balance and his reaction to your aids. The movements can also help you discover where there may be holes in the basic training. If the movement is not going well, just continuing to practice it with the same mistakes over and over again is detrimental to the horse’s training. If you have a problem in a particular movement, this is often an indicator of the horses lack of strength, suppleness or a required level of the training scale not properly established. Remember, if the Training Scale is correct and your basics are correct, the movement will take care of itself. Be patient! The movements are simply a way to show your horses progression up the training scale. It is not necessarily “training the movement” that will produce the perfect movement, but “training the grey zone/Gymnasticising the basics” that will! It is not just important to know HOW we ride the movements but also WHY/and or WHAT they show the horse has either mastered/or not. Everything that you learn in dressage can be categorized to a part of the Gymnasticising the paces at home, rather than drilling test movements over and over is the basis of a strong, sound dressage horse; both in body and mind.

The goal in each training session is; that through careful, consistent gymnastic work, the horse learns he has another gear within the paces (then two and three more gears etc) – that his body can become more supple and engaged, with every training day.

Very few fancy exercises are required in your day to day training (even on your at Grand Prix level). It’s more about a quiet insistence in one exercise regime, until an extra gear is found, used and then the next. You are training the horse’s mind and bodies to learn the correct way of going; while following the training scale as your guide

Think about a professional sprinter- He’s training sessions are not simply made up of running as fast as possible. He has a meticulously planned workout routine, including; weights, stretching, drills etc-. All focused on insuring his body will perform his sprints at his very best.

Our dressage horses are not to be treated any different. They are also Athletes.

Basic gymnastic work will ensure the horse is truly on the aids and forwards. There will be very little evidence of the aids being used, but when needed, a quick sharp correction aid is required. For example, with a more lazy horse; if the light aid is not responded to in a forward positive way, a sharper correction aid is applied and those horses shoot forwards. This rule applies to three-year-olds just under saddle through to Grand Prix horses.

No exercises should be introduced until the horse is on the aids and going forwards with equal acceptance of both reins, in straight lines, and on a circle. In the beginning this can be your entire working session. That is ok.

Progress to going forwards and back with the tempo until it looks as though all the rider had to do was breathe out for the horse to shoot forwards and breathe in for it to come back.

The reward for your horse is a relaxation of the aids within the movement. The goal is to have the horse on the aids, without tension, in self-carriage. Once this is achieved throughout various gears within each pace, then and only then, it is time for the movements begin.

Introduction to test riding When it comes to riding a polished dressage test, preparation is the key to success. MEMORIZE YOUR TEST. I mean REALLY know it. Even from Prelim Level through to FEI level. This is critical to getting scores above 70%.

You need to be able to ride the dressage test on autopilot. This reserves all ofyour focus for riding your horse. Showing off the suppleness, throughness, harmony, elevation etc.

You want to be showing your horse at its best not concentrating on if you need to turn left or right.

Walk Footfalls – 4 Beat This is a four beat pace where your horse strides out with his four feet hitting the ground separately and in lateral order.

The footfalls should be at regular intervals giving you the sound of four beats – one-two, three-four.

The order of the footfalls is; right back, right front, left back, left front. (This order can also start with the left back and then left front, right back and then right front).

Your horse will always have two or three hooves on the ground at any one time.

Trot Footfalls – 2 Beat This is a two beat pace where the feet move forward and touch the ground in diagonal pairs.

There is a moment of suspension when all feet are off the ground. This occurs between where one pair of diagonal feet rise off the ground and before the next pair of diagonal feet touch the ground.

The order of the footfalls is; right front and left back together, then left front and right back together.

When the right front is on the ground it is called the right diagonal and when the left front is on the ground it is called the left diagonal.

Canter footfalls – 3 Beats The canter is a three-beat gait, meaning that there are three footfalls heard per stride. Each footfall is the "grounding" phase of a leg. The three footfalls are evenly spaced, and followed by the "suspension" phase of the gait, which is when all four legs are off the ground. The three beats and suspension are considered one stride. The movement for each stride is as follows:

Beat One: the grounding phase of the outside hind leg. At this time, the other three legs are off the ground.

NOTE: There are many riders who think a front leg is the first beat of the canter, which is incorrect.

Beat Two: the simultaneous grounding phase of the inside hind leg and outside fore leg. The inside fore leg is still off the ground. The outside hind leg (beat one), is still touching the ground, but is about to be lifted off.

Beat Three: The grounding phase of the inside foreleg. The outside hind leg (beat one), is off the ground.
