Introduction to UniSim® TutorUniSim® Tutor is a web-based, game-style software that allows users to assess, capture and propagate plant operator knowledge. Trainees are presented challenging operating scenarios and evaluated on their response against pre-defined best practices.

With flexible deployment options, UniSim® Tutor allows for a modular level of integration with existing competency management tools including, but not limited to, Operator Training Simulators (OTS).

What if… Hypothesis DiagnoseMultiple Choice

Exercise StylesStudents can train and practice at their own pace using four different exercise styles. Periodic examination gives management insight into operator skills and competency. The four styles include:

• Multiple choice• What-if• Hypothesis• Diagnose

Multiple ChoiceTrainees are presented with a fault and are asked to identify how other process observations change in response:





What If...Presents a process event/cause – such as a valve failure. Trainees are tasked with identifying how other process elements would respond to this event:





HypothesisEffectively reverse the "What-If" task. Given certain directional process changes, trainees are asked to identify both valid and invalid equipment responses:





DiagnoseBuilds upon the previous formats and presents a more advanced challenge:

Trainees are presented with several outcomes and asked to identify the correct one by incrementally revealing the behavior of different process elements until an unambiguous outcome is reached.

Students are rewarded for arriving at the correct conclusion in the shortest number of steps while penalizing wrong turns or unnecessary queries:




Setting Up the Knowledge Base – Process Elements and CausesTo generate questions for all modes, administrators must first configure the knowledge base.

The first step is to identify the relevant equipment, process measurements and possible causes & outcomes.




Setting Up the Knowledge Base - Cause & Effect RelationshipsThe knowledge base is completed by associating the process events and causes with the corresponding process measurements and equipment.




Customization and ScoringAdministrators have the option to modify and weight the scoring for 'What-if', 'Hypothesis' and 'Diagnose' style exercises:




Additional Training ResourcesOften additional information is required to establish the context for exercises and help orient the trainee. Pictures and documents such as Process Flow Diagrams can be uploaded to provide supporting information during training.




Performance ReportsIntuitive, easy to digest, performance reports on each exercise are produced to provide feedback in both practice and examination modes.
