  • What is TRNSYS?TRNSYS is simulation software for thermal and electrical system.FeatureApplicable to solar PV simulation, solar thermal simulation, HVAC simulation, renewable energy simulation (wind, solar), and many others.Has a building simulation (TRNBuild) which can be connected to TRNSYS simulation.Has a built in weather data library for solar thermal simulation.

*TRNSYS: Transient System Simulation Tool, http://www.trnsys.com/

  • Example of TRNSYS Simulation Model Solar Thermal Collector*Solar CollectorThermal StorageHeat ExchangerWeather DataPumpTyping CommandAll of the component can be found here which then drag to the workspaceSolar Collector

  • Example of TRNSYS Simulation Model Solar Thermal CollectorThe arrow between each component represent data connection between both components. The connection list can be set or reviewed by double clicking the arrow. The figure show the data connection between weather data and solar connection where some information from weather data are used as input data for solar connection.

  • Example of TRNSYS Simulation Model Solar Thermal CollectorBy clicking each component, information windows as shown in the figure (For solar collector) can be shown. The Parameter shown fixes information. For example, for the case of solar collector are collector area, efficiency, # of collector, etc.The Input shows transient information such as: inlet temperature, inlet flow rate, ambient temperature. This information can be set as a constant or set equal to output of other component as shown in the previous slide. The output is the output result calculated such as outlet fluid temperature. This can be an input for the next component.

*A detail information about each of the variables can be shown by clicking the More bottom next to unit as shown in the figure above

  • TRNSYS Tutorial and GuidelineTRNSYS tutorial can be found under help on the top left toolbox on TRNSYS window.Recommended to try tutorial section 1.5 and 1.6 in 1. Getting Started for thermal collector and building block tutorial.More detail guideline regarding TRNSYS can be found in 2. Using simulation studio More detail guideline regarding TRNBuild can be found in 5. Multizone Building

  • TRNSYS ExampleTRNSYS come with many build in examples which can be found in: (The location can be vary depend on where TRNSYS was installed.Several good examples: Begin => Solar thermal collector example (The same as the one created on the example in section 1.5 of the guideline). 3D_Building => An example for building simulation using TRNBuild and TRNSYS. Sun-space shading => An example to calculate irradiation due to shading.
