He grew up ski racing and went to a ski acedemy in vermont. from there he moved to st.moritz switzerland to coach kids. the US ski team found him and asked him to be head coach of the US ski team. he did that for 10 years. That allowed for him to travel all over the world but the majority of the year was spent in Europe, and a significant amount of time in Germany... he quit to have a family and started building cabinets in the bay area. today he is back to coaching kids and building homes in tahoe.

Being born and growing up in Germany, Stehr spent a lot of his younger days around German culture. While working on his Ph. D. in Germany he was invited over to University of Oregon to teach and finish up his Ph. D. in 1969. Because of a bad horse riding accident he didn’t get much done the first year and was asked to stay on a second year. After that it was hard for him to leave the United States. He moved north to Oregon State University in 1975 and has been affiliated with the college of liberal arts since.
