• Founded in 1883
• More than 140 manufacturing facilities in more than 60 countries
• 40000 employees
• $12 billion in revenues in 2009
• Composed of 13 strategic business units
• Industrial Coating, Performance Coatings, Architectural Coatings,
Optical & Specialty Material, Commodity Materials and Glass
• Noteworthy achievements:
– Pioneered cationic electro-deposition automotive primers that have
virtually eliminated rust.
PPG Industries

Technical developments were driven with the following
recurrent parameters:
• Materials imported from other activities (most often from
military activity) and customized to the industry
• By essence, there are always trade-offs in material
performance
• Long and expensive material development cycle for every
stakeholder within the value chain
• Very long material life cycles
• Decreasing number of material suppliers

MOLD FILLINGThe material is then injected into a glass mold.

8
HEAT CURINGThe molds are thermally cured in an oven for approximately 7-10 hours using a specified heat cycle ranging from 85°C to 130°C.

DE-MOLDINGThe lenses are removed from the molds and pass through an inspection process.

Press for production of injection moulded lenses
Uncoated polycarbonateFinished lenses are highly stressed and it is more difficult to obtain clean holes, free from stress, when drilling these materials.
Polycarbonate injection process
11
Trivex® material is made with polyurethane enriched with additional nitrogen
Result
• Impact resistance material
• Light material
• Optical clarity
High index lenses are made with polyurethane enriched with Sulphur
( the higher the index, the more sulphur)
Result
• Thinner lens from +/-3diopters
• Higher density Lower optical clarity More Brittle
Material chemistry
12
• No lens is the result of only one of its properties
Lens attributes work in combination.

13
Lens material attributesLightness
• Lens weight is a function the material’s specific gravity. In this case, Trivex® material
was engineered to be the lightest material (1.11g/cm3).
