To furnish an overview and general introduction to the wisdom and prophetic literature of the Old Testament: authorship, composition, date, and other critical issues 2. To examine the teachings of the wisdom literature 3. To understand various theories and interpretations for the prophetic books. 4. To have a general understanding of the themes of each prophetic book. REQUIRED READINGS & RESOURCES The Bible: a standard translation (not aparaphrase) Gleason Archer, A Survey of Old Testament Introduction (Chicago: Moody, second edition, revised 2007) (216 pages by reading pages 327-543) Thomas Schreiner, The King in His Beauty (Grand Rapids: Baker, 2013) Pages 233 427 (covering wisdom literature and prophets). Peter Gentry and Stephen Wellum, God’s Kingdom Through God’s Covenant (Wheaton: Crossway, 2015) 250 pages.

◆ Therewillbetwoexams,amid-termandafinal.Theexamswillcoverclasslecturesandreadings.Theexamsaretakenonline,butmustbetakeninthepresenceofthecourseinstructor/coordinator.Thefinalexamiscumulative,coveringtheentiresemester.

◆ Therearetwobookreviewsassigned.Theseshouldbefourtosixpageseach.Halfofthereviewshouldpresentanoverviewofthebook.Theotherhalfofthereviewshouldexpressyouropinionofwhatyoulikedanddislikedaboutthebooks.

◆ Thesearetheminimalrequirementstopassthecourse.Thereviewsmustbeturnedin,bothtestsmustbetaken,andthereadingsmustbecompletedtopassthecourse.Althoughabookreviewcountsfortwentypercentofthefinalgrade,ifabookreviewisnotturnedinoracceptedbecauseitisoveraweeklate,thestudentcannotpassthecourseregardlessofscoresonotherassignments.

ATTENDANCE

StudentsareexpectedtoattendallsessionsoftheDownlineInstitute.ToreceivecreditforthiscoursestudentsmustattendinstitutesessionsonDaniel,SongofSolomonandadditionallecturescoveringanoverviewofthe

prophetsandthewisdomliteratureeitherliveoronline.RESPECTFORDIVERSEVIEWPOINTS

Studentsareexpectedtohaverespectforoneanother,particularlywhen

otherstudentsexpressdiverseviewpointsintheclassroom.
