Samba SB - Intro - 1 Introduction to Samba History The Samba is a Brazilian name for the dances originally performed by African slaves. There are several types of Sambas (for example the Batuques and the Baion) in Brazil each with their own variations. There are group dances, owing something to the Maxixe (Brazilian folk dance combing the rhythms of the Habañera and the movements of the polka) and the African Lundu (Group folk dance from Africa). The Samba was introduced in the United States at the 1939 New York World's Fair. It was there that it became a couple dance, and in that form come to Europe before the outbreak of World War II. It did not become popular, though, until after the war. This was primarily due to the influence of Princess Margaret, who became quite adept at performing it, and the movies of Carmen Miranda. Characteristics The characteristic Samba movement, outside of Brazil, is a light, bouncing or dropping action, obtained by bending and straightening the knees while the transferring weight from the ball to the flat of the foot. The Bossa Nova is a jazzed-up version of the samba that was popular in the early 1960's. In Samba the dance travels, not the dancer. The body does most of the movement in Samba, not the feet, due to the quickness of the rhythm. Use a series of contractions and compressions of the pelvis to help the legs move in the correct manner. There is a slow Samba, called the Baion. The Natural Roll is a type of figure used in slow Samba. Introduction to Samba

History The Samba is a Brazilian name for the dances originally performed by African slaves.

Timing The musical timing of the Samba is 4/4 or 2/4 time and played at a tempo of 48-56 bars per minute.

Rhythm There are seven basic rhythms commonly used in Samba.

Body Mechanics The top line and hold in Samba are similar to the hold in most Latin rhythms. Stand 6-9" apart with the body and head upright. Body weight should be forward over the balls of the feet and kept vertical, not back on the heels. Each partner should support their own weight only. Keep the shoulders parallel to your partner's on all Closed, Open and Banjo figures. The man should place his right hand on the lady's left shoulder blade with his elbow slightly rounded. The lady places her left hand on top of the man's right arm with her elbow rounded and over the man's elbow. The man holds his left hand approximately between the lady's eye level and the top of her head. Keep the head upright and either in closed or open position, depending on the figure.

Samba Bounce Action The Samba Bounce Action occurs on the last 1/4 beat of the preceding bar or figure and counted 'a'. You can use the bounce on the left or right foot, moving forward, backward or sideways. We use the bounce on all Basic Movements counted SS and SaS. We do not use the Samba Bounce on figures counted SQQ or QQS. If you are dancing SaS, also counted '1a2'(stepping left, right, left), support the majority of the weight, throughout the movement, on the left foot. This is the foot that provides the bounce. The 'a' count is the "up" count but does not produce the bounce. The Samba Bounce Action is the result of two factors: a push off the standing foot, and, full weight not being collected onto the foot of the 1/4 beat value, the 'a' step. The Samba Bounce Action is described below, beginning with the left foot. The first two items refer to the setup from the preceding figure.

Count

Action

S

On the first half of the second beat of the preceding bar of music you compress the right knee. This is on the supporting foot and count two of the preceding figure.

&

Straighten the right knee (supporting foot) as the right foot drives or pushes off and the left foot moves into position (no weight).

S

Take full weight onto the left foot and allow the left knee to compress.

a

The left knee is almost straight as the right foot moves into position and takes partial weight.

S

Transfer full weight, back onto the left foot, and allow the left knee to compress.

&

Straighten the right knee (supporting foot) as the right foot drives or pushes off and the left foot moves into position (no weight).

Introduction (continued) Samba

SB - Intro - 3

Leg and Foot Movement Take Samba steps with the latin ball-to-flat type action. Delay the movement, versus the quick collection of feet in the smooth rhythms (e.g., Foxtrot, Waltz). Point the toes outward, always, keeping the ankles and the knees veered inward. Partial Weight Take the step on the ball of the stepping foot with the weight held over the supporting foot. Take full weight, momentarily, on the foot, as you begin to take the next step.

Pelvis and Hip Movement The body does most of the movement in Samba, not the feet. Samba employs contractions and compressions of the pelvis to help the legs move in the correct manner and give Samba the characteristic look. You use the contractions to move the foot back or forward and the compressions to recover the foot, almost to the starting position. The hips in Samba should move softly from side to side in a figure eight motion as a result of the flexing and the straightening of the knees. The hips should not move on their own accord. To achieve this hip movement, take every step with pressure on the ball of the foot, with the knee flexed. As you take weight, onto the foot, the heel should lower, the knee straighten and the heel of the opposite foot releases as the hips move in the direction of the stepping foot.

Rise and Fall There is very little body or foot rise and fall in Samba. Samba is a very level dance that employs linear and circular movements but not much upward or downward movement.

Shoulder Lead The Shoulder Lead occurs when the same foot and shoulder move forward or backward at the same time, e.g., the right shoulder and the right foot move forward on the same step.

Contra (Contrary) Body Movement Contrary Body Movement (CBM) is the action of turning the opposite hip and shoulder towards the direction of the moving leg, and is used to begin all turning movements.

Contra (Contrary) Body Movement Position Contrary Body Movement Position (CBMP) is the position attained when placing either foot in the same track as the other foot. You can use CBM to attain this position or you can attain the position from a shoulder leading position. Steps taken in Banjo (BJO) position should end in CBMP.

Sway Samba does employ some amount of body sway, used mainly to assist the man or woman turn.

[Step 2.] Close the left foot to the right foot, on the ball of the foot with a slight amount of weight. The heel of the right foot will rise slightly from the floor. [Step 3.] Replace the weight on the right foot, in place (ball/flat). [Step 4.] Step forward on the left foot (ball/flat). [Step 5.] Close the right foot to the left foot on the ball of the foot with a slight amount of weight. The heel of the left foot will rise slightly from the floor. [Step 6.] Replace the weight on the left foot, in place (ball/flat).

GENERAL NOTES

Turning this figure to the left, up to one-quarter turn is allowed. Turn one-half the amount on the first step and one-half the amount on the fourth step. The lead foot may be changed also. Instead of starting with the left foot the man may start with the right foot. If starting with the man's right foot, the turn would be to the right. Choreographers may choose to use only half this figure as a transition. Either half may be used. A footwork of heel/flat may be used by the man, on step one, but is not to be confused with a normal heel lead.

GENERAL NOTES Volta action is used in a number of Samba figures including Traveling Volta, Criss Cross Voltas, Curving Volta, Circular Volta, and Spot Volta. The “cross-side” Volta action common to all these figures must consist of a clear side step. If the side step is simply a small foot movement rather than a side step, the Volta action becomes a shuffling action referred to as the “church lady”. As the stomach muscles are alternately compressed and released, the pelvis will naturally tilt forward and back. The pelvis may also shift in the direction opposite of the side step (the “a” counts, i.e. to the left on the side steps).

Circular Volta Left Face (continued) Samba

SB – Fig 16 - 3 S#8 2004

The figure may be danced in Closed or Butterfly position. A transition figure such as a Foot Change will be needed to get partners on the same footwork. This figure rotates around the man’s left foot. The third, fifth and seventh steps for the man may be in place or may inscribe a small circle. The amount of rotation may vary depending on the requirements of the choreography. A variant of the Circular Volta Left Face is the Roundabout to Left which begins with a Circular Volta, but on steps 6 and 7 a swiveling action is used to change to BJO position.

Samba

SB – Fig 18 - 4

S#8 2004

Criss Cross Voltas (continued)

GENERAL NOTES Volta action is used in a number of Samba figures including Traveling Volta, Criss Cross Voltas, Curving Volta, Circular Volta, and Spot Volta. The “cross-side” Volta action common to all these figures must consist of a clear side step. If the side step is simply a small foot movement rather than a side step, the Volta action becomes a shuffling action referred to as the “church lady”. As the stomach muscles are alternately compressed and released, the pelvis will naturally tilt forward and back. The pelvis may also shift in the direction opposite of the side step (the “a” counts, i.e. to the left on the side steps for the man and to the right on the side steps for the woman in the first half of the figure). The first part (steps 1-7) and second part (steps 8-14) of the figure may be danced separately which are a form of Curving Volta changing sides.

Rotate left face to face center of hall in Butterfly position.

LADY Start in Butterfly Position facing center of the hall. Use samba bounce action throughout. [Step 1.] Lift slightly on the left foot cross the right foot in front of the left foot (ball/flat). [Step 7.] Lift slightly on the left foot cross the right foot in front of the left foot (ball/flat) with Latin cross action and settle into knees. Rotate to face wall in Butterfly position.

GENERAL NOTES

Volta action is used in a number of samba figures including Traveling Volta, Criss Cross Voltas, Curving Volta, Circular Volta, and Spot Volta. The pelvis may also shift in the direction opposite of the side step (the “a” counts). The amount of rotation and beginning alignment may vary depending on the requirements of the choreography. Curving Volta action is used in the first and last parts of the Criss Cross Voltas. Circular Volta is characterized by a tighter turning action, while Spot Volta has one foot in place essentially throughout the figure.

GENERAL NOTES The forward and back action should be in the feet only. There should be very little movement of the body. Some dancers like to move the lead hands forward and back in the same direction as the lead feet. The beginning alignment may vary depending on the requirements of the choreography. This is the same as the Jive figure, but to give the figure Samba character, dancers could slide the trail foot forward and backward an inch or two as the steps on the lead feet are taken, in a manner similar to the Corta Jaca.

turning left face. Volta action is used in a number of Samba figures including Traveling Volta, Criss Cross Voltas, Curving Volta, Circular Volta, and Spot Volta. The pelvis may also shift in the direction opposite of the side step (the “a” counts, i.e. to the right on the side steps for the man and to the left on the side steps for the woman).

GENERAL NOTES The Natural Roll is similar to the Reverse Roll, but with clockwise rotation and rolling of the upper bodies in the opposite direction that the feet are moving. The figure can be done in Shadow Position with both partners using the Man’s footwork. Note that the knees are more flexed during steps 1-3 for the man (steps 4-6 for the woman) and are straighter during steps 4-6 for the man (steps 1-3 for the woman). There is no samba bounce in this figure. Alternate alignments are possible depending on the requirements of the choreography.

GENERAL NOTES The Reverse Roll (also called the Reverse Barrel Roll) is a variant of the Reverse Turn with the same footwork and counterclockwise rolling of the upper bodies. An alternate hold is to join the left hands above the heads with the right arms around the partner’s body, which exaggerates the appearance of the body rolling. There is no samba bounce in this figure. Alternate alignments are possible depending on the requirements of the choreography.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in a Closed Dance Position facing the diagonal line and center of the hall. [Step 1.] Step forward (CBM) on the left foot (ball/flat). [Step 2.] Continuing to turn to the left, step to the side and back on the right toe. Do not move around your partner, but move through her. [Step 3.] Cross the left foot in front of the right foot (ball/flat). The left heel should be near the right toe with the toes turned out (Latin Cross). [Step 4.] Step back (CBM) on the right foot (ball/flat). [Step 5.] Continuing to turn to the left, step to the side on the left foot (ball/flat). This should be a small step as you are on the inside of the turn and your partner has further to move. [Step 6.] Finishing the left turn, close the right foot to the left (ball/flat).

LADY Start in a Closed Dance Position facing on the diagonal reverse line and wall. [Step 1.] Step back (CBM) on the right foot (ball/flat). [Step 2.] Continuing to turn to the left, step to the side on the left foot (ball/flat). This should be a small step as you are on the inside of the turn and your partner has further to move. [Step 3.] Continuing to turn to the left, close the right foot to the left foot (ball/flat). [Step 4.] Step forward (CBM) on the left foot (ball/flat). [Step 6.] Cross the left foot in front of the right foot (ball/flat) completing the left face turn. The left heel should be near the right toe with the toes turned out (Latin Cross).

GENERAL NOTES When dancing the Reverse Turn SQQ, there will be no Samba bounce. When dancing the figure 1a2, use the bounce action. The first step of a SQQ figure can be heel/flat. This is not to be danced as a heel lead in the smooth rhythms it is to allow for ease of movement and not rise and fall. For the man there is a slight inclination of the body to turn to the left on step two and three and to the right on step five and six. The lady's inclination is the opposite of the man.

MAN Start in an Open Promenade Dance Position with the lead hands joined in front, facing on the diagonal of the line and wall. The lady is in advance and you release your right hand from her back. [Step 1.] Step forward (CBM) on the left foot (ball/flat) moving across and behind the lady. Hold your left arm loose enough to allow the lady to push it up, enabling her to cross under your left arm. [Step 2.] Turning to the left on the left foot, step to the side on the inside edge of the toe of the right foot. This step is only a partial weight change and uses the last half of the second beat of music. (A quarter beat if using two-four timing). [Step 3.] Finish turning one-quarter right face on the right toe and then replace the weight, (ball/flat) onto the left foot. [Step 4.] Step forward (CBM) on the right foot (ball/flat) moving across and behind the lady. Hold your left arm loose enough to allow the lady to push it up, enabling her to cross under your left arm. [Step 5.] Turning to the right on the right foot, step to the side on the inside edge of the toe of the left foot. This step is only a partial weight change and uses the last half the second beat of music. (A quarter beat if using two-four timing). [Step 6.] Step side on the right foot (toe) with toe turned out and lift body slightly while compressing stomach muscles. [Step 7.] Step in place on left foot (ball/flat). Rotate to face wall.

LADY Start in Open Facing Position facing center of hall. Use Samba bounce action throughout. [Step 1.] Lift slightly on the left foot cross the right foot in front of the left foot (ball/flat). Right foot points in facing direction while right knee is placed in front of left knee as left toe is turned out (Latin cross action) and settle into knees. Rotate strongly right face. [Step 2.] Step side on the left foot (toe) with toe turned out and lift body slightly while compressing stomach muscles. Continue right face rotation. [Step 6.] Step side on the left foot (toe) with toe turned out and lift body slightly while compressing stomach muscles. Continue right face rotation. [Step 7.] Step in place on right foot (ball/flat). Rotate to face center of hall.

GENERAL NOTES This figure rotates around the man’s left and woman’s right feet one or two revolutions. Volta action is used in a number of Samba figures including Traveling Volta, Criss Cross Volta’s, Curving Volta, Circular Volta, and Spot Volta. The pelvis may also shift in the direction opposite of the side step (the “a” counts, i.e. to the left on the side steps for the man and to the right on the side steps for the woman).

[Step 6.] Step side on the right foot (toe) with toe turned out and lift body slightly while compressing stomach muscles. [Step 7.] Cross the left foot in front of the right foot (ball/flat) with Latin Cross action and settle into knees.

GENERAL NOTES The figure may also be danced in Butterfly or Closed position. Volta action is used in a number of samba figures including Traveling Volta, Criss Cross Volta’s, Curving Volta, Circular Volta, and Spot Volta. The pelvis may also shift in the direction opposite of the side step (the “a” counts, i.e. to the right on the side steps for the man and to the left on the side steps for the woman).

GENERAL NOTES As an option you may start the figure from Half Open Position. A choreographer may use the first three steps or the last three steps of the figure alone. They might also repeat the figure as they desire. It makes no difference whether you start the figure with step one or step four. The use of the slight Samba bounce, combined with the foot positions, will result in a natural forward and back movement of the hips.
