Learning Objectives

• Navigate the “Ribbon” and PowerPoint Interface • Understand various PowerPoint views• Using built-in PowerPoint templates• Import existing slides from other presentations • Format text on your slides (bullet/number lists, etc.)• Adding objects like pictures, tables, graphics to your slides • Use themes in your slides to control color, font, effects• Polish your slides with header/footer, background, etc

Tabs, Groups, Commands

Tabs: The Ribbon is made up of different tabs, each related to specific kinds of work you do in Excel.

Groups: Each tab has several groups that show related items together.

Commands: A command is a button or a menu.

Starting a blank presentation

• Click the File tab, then New, and when Blank presentation is selected, click Create on right hand side.

• A blank presentation will open with 1 slide ready for editing.

• Save the file with a meaningful name first.

Different Types of slides

PowerPoint has pre-formatted basic slides you can add by clicking New Slide button: • Title & Content• Title Slide• Two Content• Title Only• Blank• Duplicate Selected Slides

Importing Existing slides

• Click the New Slide button and select Reuse Slides.

• Use the Browse button to open file from where you want to import.

• Roll over with your mouse to see a larger picture of the slide.

• Click on a slide you want, and it’ll be imported after the current slide.

• Option: Keep source formatting checkbox.

Printing slides, notes, handouts

When you print, you have several options: • Handout pages (put 1-9 slides

per page)• Full Page slides• Notes pages (1 slide & notes)• Outline (main points per slide)

You can print certain slides instead of the entire presentation!

Save your presentation (formats)

You can save your presentation in a variety of formats: • PowerPoint (.pptx – 2007 & newer versions)• PowerPoint 97-2003 version (.ppt)• PDF • PowerPoint show

Formatting text on slides

Basic formatting is available when you write text: Bold, Italic, Underline, Shadow, Change Font Size, Color

You can center textYou can indent text without using a list or bullets.

PowerPoint will automatically RESIZE your text based on the size of the text box on the slide.

Setting up your slides

• Click on the Design tab, then the Page Setup button to see different setup criteria

• Your slides and notes/handouts can have different orientations (Landscape slides, portrait handouts)

• You can make custom sized slides if necessary

4. Reduce redundancy – say it once
