Understanding the nature of (the English) language

• how it “works” as a structural system

• how it has developed over time

• how people use it for social interaction in different situations and in different English-speaking countries

• how speakers learn it as children and how they still shape it as adults

What you can expect …

7

The nature of the course

= a SEMINAR, not a LECTURE course!

• thorough preparation of each session (different workflow than in school!)

• The course is worth 5 ECTS points, which amounts to a sum total of 150 hours of work. Realistically, you should allow for 4 hours of preparation for each session!

The nature of the course

What will the weekly preparation look like?

• revision of the previous session and in-depth study of a text on the next subject matter (between 15 and 20 pages per week)

• texts compiled in a course reader (will be made available as a PDF in the first week of the semester (not earlier))1

• Print the reader if possible, so that you can work with it properly.

• weekly homework depending on instructor

1 Get the Adobe Acrobat Reader for this. Apple users: Do not use Preview/Vorschau for PDFs but rather Acrobat Reader!

Page 9: Introduction to Linguistics (I)

What you can expect …

• final examination

• 90 min. written exam; date, time and place to be announced in class

• Every instructor creates their own exam for their specific groups. Therefore, do not “ask around” for old exams (FSR, secretaries, etc.); talk to your instructor instead about what the exam will be like.

Electronic platforms

Friedolin = the campus management system of FSU Jena

• enrolment for classes (= right now)

• enrolment for the exam (= a separate enrolment process during the semester)

• “Anmeldung”: 10 parallel groups: Choose one to three and prioritize them. Each student attends exactly one group.

• “Zulassung”: Oct 7 + Oct 12. You have to see “ZU” in Friedolin to be part of a specific group; “AN” is not enough!

How to get answers to your questions

• In class: Break the ice – don’t be shy but try to participate as much as possible. You cannot improve your English without using it, and you cannot get answers to your questions if you don’t ask them.

• E-mail: You can contact your instructor with urgent organizational problems, but not for general content-related questions.

• Tutorial: optional regular offer to ask content-related questions, do additional exercises, etc. (taught by an advanced student); detailsto be announced in class

Page 16: Introduction to Linguistics (I)

16

Communication of absences and drop-out

• Regular attendance is the default: we expect you to come to class every week.

• If you are ill, we never need to see a doctor’s note.

• But you are expected to catch up, access the materials and come to the next meeting fully prepared. This is your responsibility, and something like “I wasn’t here last week” is not an excuse for not being able to give an answer in class.

• If you wish to drop the class, change groups etc., please send an e-mail to let your instructor know about it. Communication is key!
