What is a digital collection?

• FL-Islandora is a digital library platform for your institution’s digital collections

• Commercial (vendor) vs. non-commercial digital materials

• Special collections• Institution repositories• Scholarly publications

What is FL-Islandora?

• FLVC’s implementation of Islandora open-source digital asset management software

• Installed on FLVC servers and maintained by FLVC staff

• Library staff manage their own content• Customized to meet the needs of FLVC

stakeholders with input from the MCLS Digital Initiatives Standing Committee (DISC) and its Islandora Subgroup (ISG)

What is Islandora?

• Islandora is Open Source Software designed to manage digital assets

• Originally developed by University of Prince Edward Island’s Robertson Library

• Implemented and contributed to by a growing international community

• Utilizes Drupal and Fedora software

FL-Islandora and other digital services

• PALMM site (Publication of Archival, Library & Museum materials): provides digital access to important source materials

• DigiTool: a legacy digital library platform maintained by FLVC. Most PALMM materials are currently stored in DigiTool

• PALMM will be an FL-Islandora site; DigiTool materials are being migrated to PALMM

• Colleges will be able to participate in FL-Islandora PALMM

FL-Islandora, DISC and ISG

• The Digital Initiatives Standing Committee of the Members Council on Library Services advises on FL-Islandora development priorities

• The Islandora sub-group (ISG) of DISC advises on the details of FL-Islandora functionality

• Your institution will have its own site: branding, colors, logos

• Showcase your own materials and collections• Institutional history, materials about your

institution (photos, yearbooks, programs)• Intellectual output from your institution• Unique special collections: archives and

donated materials, rare published materials• Florida materials: history and culture

Getting started with FL-Islandora

• Begin an inventory of your digital materials and collections

• Familiarize yourself with FL-Islandora by visiting the FSU Digital Library, FSUDL, at http://fsu.digital.flvc.org

• Contact the FLVC Help Desk ([email protected]) if you’d like us to build an FL-Islandora site for you

• Once you have an FL-Islandora site you’ll receive training. Then you can build your collections at your own pace, making them public only when you’re ready to do so
