EU EXECUTIVE TRAINING PROGRAMME (ETP) IN KOREA

The EU Exe cutive Training Programme (ETP) is a human resource development programme

targeting European companies and executives looking to enter or expand their business

activities in Korea. Established and funded by the European Commission, ETP was launched in

Korea since 2002 and Yonsei University has been entrusted by the European Commission with

the implementation of the programme in Korea since the 4th cycle of ETP (2006 - 2007).

The 12-month programme comprises two parts - a three-week Inception Module in Europe held

at the School of Oriental and Af rican Studies (SOAS), University of London, and an eleven-month

Immersion Module in Korea delivered by Yonsei University. The immersion module is composed

of two components: intensive language and business culture and an internship in a Korean

    company.

After gaining an overview of Korean history, business, culture and modern society in Europe, ETP

participants will start the 30-week Immersion module implemented by Yonsei University. The

Korean Language Component, administered by the Korean Language Institute, offers intensive

and practical language studies that can be translated directly into business situations. The Businessand Management Component, administered by the Sangnam Institute of Management, is

focused on business expertise and management skills that are vital for doing business in Korea.

ETP is an action-learning programme and participants will put these skills and knowledge into

practice during their 12-week internship at a Korean company.

Upon completion, the ETP aims to equip participants with language skills necessary for basic

business communication, business knowledge to successfully target Korean firms and consumers,

and ultimately develop a clear business strategy for their EU companies to succeed in the Korean

    market.

The Korean Language Component off ers courses tailored to participan ts proficiency levels. Emphasis is

placed on acquiring practical communication skills, with beginner classes covering everyday conversation

that gradually shifts focus to business scenarios. This is achieved by combining regular classes on grammar,

expressions and vocabulary with business-related exercises such as group interviews with Korean executives

and presentations conducted by participants on their own areas of expertise. A wide range of additional

resources and opportunities outside the classroom facilitate effective language acquisition. After 30 weeks

(450 hours) of language studies, optional tutorial sessions are offered during the internship period to

further advance the participants ability to communicate with host companies. Korean ability will beevaluated at the end of the programme through the final exam and presentation.

    Korean Language Component

After the Korean language and Business & Management training, each ETP participant will engage in a12-week internship at a Korean company, which they will organise and must secure on their own with the

support of the European Union and Yonsei University. The internship provides a unique opportunity for

participants to apply the acquired skills and knowledge to practice and learn first-hand about business in

Korea. The internship is not only a chance for participants to build and establish contacts with Korean

companies, but Korean companies will also find that hosting these internships will serve as a stepping

stone to establishing meaningful relationships with EU companies and businesspeople.
