• For first year students: English Grammar in Use Third Edition by
Raymond Murphy, published by CUP. Roald Dahl “Tales of the Unexpected”. (One of
these must be presented at the oral exam) English Vocabulary in Use by Stuart Redman
Second Edition CUP (Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate level)
English Grammar in Use Supplementary Exercises by Louise Hashemi CUP (for self-study)
BOOKS YOU MUST BUY:
• For second year students: Longman Avanced Learner’s Grammar Short stories Reading Classics published
by Blackcat (4 must be presented for the oral exam).

The importance of self-study:
You will be spending 20 weeks in the classroom but 32 weeks out of the classroom so self-study is of the utmost importance.
Here are some things you can do to study alone:
study all the grammar points in the book not covered in class Use such sites as BBC Learning English to improve your language
skills Access newspapers on line to practise reading newspaper articles
(especially the second year students) such as the Guardian, the Times, the Independent, the Economist and so on.
Access EFL websites such as Dave’s ESL Café, English-zone and Learn English to practise a variety of aspects
Use the self-access material at the faculty and the CLA
