Local Area Network (LAN): A computer network limited to the immediate area, usually the same building

Wide Area Network (WAN): A computer network that covers a large geographic area

Packets are “chunks of data” that are transmitted on a communication line

Protocols are the languages spoken by a computer on a network

A router is a device connected between a LAN and a WAN that directs packets to multiple communication lines and devices

“Routing” is the act of directing packets

Servers & Services

A Server is a computer system that performs various operations for the whole network

A Server performs Services such as Web publishing, E-mail, filtering, and news.

Client computers are the desktop systems that users (people) use

They use the network ServicesThey must be connected to a LAN that can

support the desired protocol
