Project SummaryOur project is to contribute to strengthening the European dimension of education by

promoting cooperative activities between schools from different countries in North, Southand Central Europe.

It is the main target of our project to explore the expectations of young EU citizens

concerning their prospects and future opportunities within the European Community. To

start with, the participating youths will make themselves familiar with each other’s current

situation, educational systems and cultures. It is the educational intention to display to the

youngsters from so many different European nations a wide range of positive prospects in

spite of the currently difficult social and economic situation in their home countries.

We will look into the present-day youth in the partner countries involved, i. e. their values

and ideals, their hopes and fears both as individuals and as a generation; particular interest

will be put on special needs students. One of the aims is to understand how they see

themselves and their commitment and responsibility as both national and European citizens.

By contrasting their self-perception with the ones of their peers, youths will become more

aware of what they have in common and thereby unites them. The project team members

believe that this is indispensable for building a common ground from which to move on and

eventually build a Europe of enthusiastic and politically committed citizens.

Students as well as teachers will, of course, improve their language and ICT skills within the

project work. Project communication will be in English and, besides the available

“mobilities”, we will use modern media to communicate “face-to-face” as much as possible. 

Social competence will be fostered by working in foreign groups; this should make prejudice

(should there be any) collapse and preconceptions break down. Students will learn to create

and to evaluate questionnaires and to implement different forms of (re)presentation

(booklets, e-books, e-twinning page, exhibitions, etc). They will also be dealing with their

professional future: they will describe dream jobs and, in this context, find out about their

training possibilities. They will gather information on enterprises and universities in their

national environment and exchange it. Necessarily, we will also be looking into economic

aspects such as youth unemployment. Finally, it could be exciting to combine social aspects

with creativity and present some of the results in the form of a musical, an exhibition or by

means of street art.

The staff, too, will get to know much more about the EU and the partner countries. We want

to exchange working methods and work examples which are apt to be taken over into daily

school life.

The intended focus of our project should make aware the role of the EU in the life of young

Europeans, illustrating to them the prospects and possibilities which the EU offers to them.

Austria - NMS -HS 1 Feldkircheneldkirchen in Kärnten

Feldkirchen is situated in the middle of Carinthia (Kärnten). Carinthia is the most southern

province of Austria.

Feldkirchen is quite a small town with about 14.000 inhabitants. One of the most

outstanding buildings is the Bamberger Amthof. It is a very old building and today it is a

cultural centre – there are lots of interesting concerts and exhibitions. It also houses a small

museum to the history of Feldkirchen. In the Amthof there is also the music school – some

of our students learn to play their musical instruments there.

You can do nearly all kinds of sports around

Feldkirchen.

Wintersports can be done in different skiing

regions which can be reached within half an

hour. Our pupils have a skiing course for one

week in the second form.

Hiking in the mountains is popular especially

in autumn.

For doing summer sports like swimming,

sailing, surfing or – very trendy the previous

summer – stand up paddling - there are

beautiful lakes nearby.

The NMS Feldkirchen

In our school there are pupils from the age of 10 to 14. It is a „New Middle School“ and has

an emphasis on music, that means students in the music classes are offered a wide range ofmusical training. We have got a school choir, the pupils learn how to play instruments and

they can be members of the school band.

Students who are not so gifted in

music can also put their focus on

either a second foreign language

beside English (which is Italian in

our school) or Information

Technology – where they learn how

to work on the computer and using

different kinds of software.

Furthermore they have the

possibility to do the European

Computer Driving Licence.

In some of our classes there are students with special needs. These students are integrated

in most activities that we do at school – if possible.

Germany - Gymnasium Lüneburger Heide (GLH) The GLH is a private grammar school close to Luneburg in the

metropolitan region Hamburg, which is situated in the north ofGermany. More than 70000 people are living in Luneburg. The

historical Hanseatic City is affected by the university with its

students.

At GLH every pupil knows each

other very well, because of the

familiar atmosphere. 280

students (classes 5 to 12) and 31

teachers are part of the GLH.

There are two classes in every

year, each class with about 20

children. Once a year, there is the

possibility to evaluate the

teachers, to give them a feedback

and the chance to improve their

way of teaching. Usually, thereare class trips every second year

to destinations in Germany and Europe.

Our classrooms are modern equipped. For example there are a lot of electronic whiteboards,

which are very good for the usage of multimedia contents.

An important aspect in our school is that talented students are encouraged by special

projects to learn things, which are not taught in normal lessons.

Up from class 5, English is taught as ourfirst foreign language. In class six we´ve

got the chance to choose between

Spanish, French and Latin as second

foreign language. In school we have got

45 minutes every day to do our

homework for years 5 to 9. On

Wednesday, every second week there

are mixed classes practicing projects like

cooking, playing football, games or go

swimming. For the lower classes, there

are handicrafts and neurobic (fighting

with stocks), to ensure enough motion.

The international alignment becomes very important. That’s why the GLH has a partner

school in India. It is useful to give students the chance to improve their language skills and to

discover other cultures. These are also two of many reasons, why our school decided to

become part of the Comenius project “Youth ECHOES”. We hope that we are going to learn

more about our neighbors in Europe and the principles the EU stands for.

Greece - 7th Geniko Lykeio Ioanninon 

Our school is in Ioannina, a city in

the north west of Greece. In

Ioannina there live more than

100.000 people.

The school is located in the city

centre.

The "7th LYCEUM of IOANNINA"

first opened during the school

year 1979 -1980 as “CLASSICAL

LYCEUM IOANNINON "(one of

the eleven across the country).

The building was used as a

Commercial School in the past

and it is listed under the

protection of the Internal

Revenue Modern Monuments.

In 1983 a new building was

Latvia - Nirzas pamatskolaNirza Elementary School is situated in the south-eastern part of Latvia in a region called Latgale ( this

part is usually called ‘The land of blue lakes’), not far from the small town Ludza in a village Nirza on

the shore of a very beautiful lake Nirza.

Nirza is 287 km from the capital Riga and

15 km from the border with Russia. It is

also a tourist and cultural-historical

region.

A bit of history...

•  The school was founded in 1865

in Nirza district as a three-forms

elementary school. The school was built by local authority of Nirza.

There worked only one teacher at that time.

•  Year 1906 – There were 3 forms in the school.

•  Year 1927 - There were established 6 forms. Five teachers were working at school.

•  Year 1932 – A new Nirza six-forms elementary school’s building was built, which is called

nowadays the old school’s part. 

•  Year 1944 – Nirza seven-forms school.

•  Year 1956 – The boarding-school and the canteen were arranged.

•  Year 1960 – Nirza eight –forms school.

•  Year 1987 – Nirza nine-forms school.

Since August 1992 the school is called Nirza Elementary school.

•  68 students ( our pupils come from the local villages and two children orphanages in Istalsna and

Lauderi) The age of our students is 6-16 years old.

•  13 teachers( many of our teachers live in Nirza, but still some of them also come from the local

towns Ludza and Zilupe )

graduate student, together

corner of it there is a symbol of Latvian flag. The year of the foundation of our school and the symbol

of the school well are depicted on the flag. Since we live in the east the sunrise is also represented on

it. The Earth of the sunrise.

Lithuania - sausio 13-osios vidurine mokyklaJanuary 13th school, Vilnius, Lithuania

Our school is situated almost in

the middle of capital of Lithuania

 – Vilnius.

Today, Vilnius, the capital of

Lithuania, is one of the most

frequently visited cities of

Eastern Europe. It draws

attention, not only because of

its unique architectural

character, but also because of its

cultural events and attractions.

During the first ten years of independence the city has become a

tourist attraction centre. It is, therefore, not surprising that

during these ten years the

number of tourists has

consistently increased and at

the same time tourist

infrastructure and services

have been developed.

Vilnius, as the capital of

Lithuania, is the home of

the President, the Seimas, the

Government and the Supreme Court. Diplomatic missions,

educational, cultural, financial, research, and healthcare institutions are based here.

It is also the largest city of the country. According to the 2012 statistics, the

population of Vilnius is 523,000 people, which accounts for 17 per cent of the

total population of the country. Vilnius is home to people of different ethnic

backgrounds. Ethnic Lithuanians – 57.8%, Poles – 18.7%, Russians – 14%,

Belarusians – 4%, Jews – 0.5%, and representatives of other ethnic backgrounds

account for the remaining 5%.

Vilnius occupies an area of about 400

square kilometres of which 20.2%

approximately is developed, and the

remainder is green space (43.9% approx.)

and water (2.1% approx.). The historical

centre of Vilnius, the Old Town,

(Senamiestis) is one of the largest old town centres in

Eastern Europe (covering almost 360 hectares). The Old Town is

situated in a picturesque valley of two rivers – the Vilnia and the

Neris, at the crossroads of trade roads, next to the ford, which

was guarded by Vilnius castle in the older times.

Vilnius 34th Secondary School was established in 1968. In 1994, the School was awarded January

13th secondary school name after historical events in 1991. January 13 is the date, when 3 of our

school's students, and two parents were killed near the TV tower during whole night defending the

independence of Lithuania. There is January 13th Memorial and a Museum of History at school. Since

2012 school has been reorganized into a basic school and named the January 13th School.

Our school has 330 students, 40 teachers working here. The school has all pupils’ support specialists:speech therapist, special educator, psychologist, social educator.

School provides basic English, from the second class. VI th grade students have the opportunity tochoose a second foreign language: German, French or Russian. The school has a library, a

computerized reading room, three computer classes, and a conference class. The school has began to

develop and implement a career education system. The aim is to enable young people to self-

manage their career in future. We provide various forms of services in the real and virtual

environment, which helps to develop the necessary skills and opportunities in order to get basic

competencies in forming the way of life (career), awareness and education continuity.

We have nice arts and other extracurricular activities traditions. There are 17 free of charge clubs

after school: art, handcrafts, drama, pottery, sports, singing and others. Dance studio “Lazdynėlis”fosters deep folk dance traditions.

For many years the school has been collaborating with Germany Erfurt state integrated secondary

school "Johannesplatz”. We also collaborate with neighborhood schools and kindergartens as well aswith other local schools, Lithuanian University of Educational Sciences, Police, St. John Bosco parish

community, different public organizations, and a music school.

Our school students and teachers are actively involved in local and international projects: “LIONSQUEST”, “Encourage the future”, “Supreme”, “Apple friends”, “School without drugs”. The programsare orientated to educate social skills, twit, addictions

and suicide prevention. We participate in "Fruit for

children“ and "Milk for Children" programs, underwhich all primary school students receive fruits and

dairy products for free.

Traditionally the school organizes various

competitions, actions, shows: "Week without Bullying

“No to Tobacco Day”, “School community day”, “Opendays at school”, “My fosterling”, “A week of colours”,“Christmas evenings”, “We are friends of the police”and others. We always celebrate or commemorate all

public holidays, especially 13th

 of January in order to

 justify the name of the school we are trying to foster public spirit and patriotism.

January 13 - th school fosters honorable traditions, responds to current issues, mobilizes the schoolcommunity in realizing the goals of today’s school.

Poland - Zespół Szkół Ogólnokształcących 

I Liceum Ogólnokształcące im. Henryka Sienkiewicza 

ŚwiebodzinŚwiebodzin is a town located in the west of Poland, 70 km

east from the German border and 130 km east from Berlin

(39 km northeast from Zielona Góra,195 km northwest

from Wrocław and 110 km west from Poznań).

It is a town in lubuskie province with the population of

around 22 thousand people. Naturally placed in the

valley, the town looks very picturesque. It is of medieval

origins; was founded by the knight called Świeboda.

Świebodzin is an important transportation hub, lying at

the crossroads of the A2 motorway and S3 expressway.

The center of Świebodzin still contains remnants of the

town’s past as a medieval walled settlement, including

two towers and defensive walls. The central market

square is dominated by the town hall, built in the 16th

 

century in the renaissance style and rebuilt in the 19th

 

century with the addition of the clock tower. The local

museum placed in the town hall is the place you can’t

miss. Nearby there are two magnificent churches. The

oldest one is the Church of St. Michael the Archangel

built in the 15th

 century. It is famous for its spectacular

altar made by Wit Stwosz’s school. The second neo-

gothic Church

of the

Mother of

God was

built during the

Imperial German period as a Protestant Church

but was reconsecrated as a Catholic Church after

World War II. Recently Świebodzin has a new focal

point which attracts pilgrims - the Sanctuary of

God’s Mercy and the world’s tallest statue of

Jesus Christ.

I Liceum Ogólnokształcące im. Henryka Sienkiewicza 

(I Henryk Sienkiewicz High School) 

Our school’s building was built at the beginning of the 20th century when our town was in

Germany. It is historical and really beautiful building and it is constantly modernized. Till theWorld War II there was a school for girls. After the war, Polish people wanted to open a

school here and as it is easy to count, students have been learning in our school for over 65

years.

There are almost 500 students and 40 teachers in

our school. Students who learn at I Henryk

Sienkiewicz High School are the age of 16 to 19.

They study general subjects like maths, history,

biology and of course foreign languages – English

and German (some of them study French). In the

first year at school all students have similar

subjects. In the second and third year they

choose some of the subjects they study in order

to be well-prepared for the final exams. At the

end of their education students take their final

exams called MATURA. 99% of the students

pass their exams and continue their education

at universities. If you want to get to gooduniversities this is a school for you!

Portugal - Escola Secundaria Manuel

Portimão is a Portuguese town located in the Algarve region, on the

southern coast of Portugal. According to the 2011 census its total population

was 55,614 inhabitants.

There are several historical/well-known places in Portimão, such as:

  Jardim da Praça da República (Praça da República garden)

  Municipal museum, housed in a former fish canning factory.

  Fortaleza de Santa Catarina (Santa Catarina’s fortress) 

  Marina de Portimão; Arade river. In the last few years, the Arade river

has been the place for important events like the International Championship of

Formula 1 speedboat racing.

  Miradouro de Santa Catarina (Santa Catarina belvedere)

  Praça Manuel Teixeira Gomes (Manuel Teixeira Gomes square)

  Municipal Theatre “O Tempo” 

Portimão’s beaches with their golden sand, framed by cliffs and rocks,offer a cosmopolitan atmosphere, which make them some of the most praised

international tourist destinations.

Portimão is also one of the best places in the world to play golf.

Manuel Teixeira Gomes Secondary School

Manuel Teixeira Gomes Secondary School (ESMTG) is located in Portimão,

Algarve. Our school has approximately 1000 students during the day, 150 in

evening classes and about 120 teachers. It has four buildings for classes andother facilities, a multi-purpose building where the students’ hall is situated and

a gymnasium. In ESMTG there is a library where students can carry on their

research work, use the computer, play chess or even watch TV. 

As for curricular studies the school offers a

big diversity of courses which range from

professional training in areas like childcare,

computing or renewable energies, to scientificand humanistic courses aimed at students with

a more academic profile. ESMTG also offers

extra-curricular activities such as sports and a

drama club, widely acclaimed for the excellent

work of its actors, which has brought them

many awards.

During their breaks students can play table

tennis, sit and talk to their friends in the

gardens, go to the cafeteria or to the school

canteen at lunch time.

For physical education students are free to

choose sports like surf, as Portimão is located on

the coast.

The school hosts and integratessuccessfully students from more than 25

different countries and offers them extra

classes of Portuguese for foreign students.

Scotland - ST.OSWALD’S SECONDARY SCHOOL 

GLASGOW COAT OF ARMS

There’s the tree that never grew, 

There’s the bird that never flew, There’s the fish that never swam, 

There’s the bell that never rang. 

Glasgow is the largest city in Scotland and the fourth-largest city in the United Kingdom. It is

situated on the River Clyde in the country's West Central Lowlands. Inhabitants of the city

are referred to as Glaswegians

Glasgow grew from a small rural settlement on the River Clyde to become one of the largest

seaports in the world. Expanding from the medieval bishopric and royal burgh, and the laterestablishment of the University of Glasgow in the 15th century, it became a major centre of

the Scottish Enlightenment in the 18th century. From the 18th century the city also grew as

one of Great Britain's main hubs of transatlantic trade with North America and the West

Indies. 

With the onset of the Industrial Revolution, the population and economy of Glasgow and the

surrounding region expanded rapidly to become one of the world's pre-eminent centres of

chemicals, textiles and engineering; most notably in the shipbuilding and marine engineering

industry, which produced many innovative and famous vessels. Glasgow is known as the"Second City of the British Empire" for much of the Victorian era and Edwardian period.

Today it is one of Europe's top ten financial centres and is home to many of Scotland's

leading businesses. Glasgow is also ranked as the 57th most liveable city in the world.

The entire region surrounding the CITY covers approximately 2.3 million people, 41% of

Scotland's population. Glasgow will host the 2014 Commonwealth Games. 

St. Oswald’s Secondary School

St. Oswald’s Secondary School was

built in 1967. At the moment there are

120 students ages 12 to 18 at the

school. We do many subjects

including:

English, Maths, P.E, Music, Art, HomeEconomics, Business Studies, Science,

History, Modern studies, Media

studies.

We work with the community on projects across the curriculum including:

  Selling rice to raise money for farmers in Malawi

  Filling back packs for children in Malawi

  Collecting food for the food banks

Glasgow is hosting the 2014 Commonwealth Games so our school is involved in many

projects/competitions on this topic.

Spain - IES MARTÍNEZ URIBARRI

SALAMANCA.

Salamanca is

not a very big

city in the

north-west of

Spain, about

200km from

the capital

Madrid. Salamanca was founded before the IIIrd

century. It has been declared a “World Heritage

Site” by the UNESCO in 1988 and was also

designated “European City of  Culture” in 2002. Walking along its streets, you can find out

the quantity of architectural marvels the city has. Meeting the people there, the lively and

student atmosphere, the magnificient culture and the hospitality, you will know how

Salamanca is.

THE MONUMENTS.

In the city centre, near to the young atmosphere, there is the Main Square: it is, surely, the

most beautiful between the arcaded squares in the world. It was built during the XVIIIth

century. It has, as a closer in the north wall, the city council building. Very close to the Main

Square, you find the “Casa de las Conchas”, in English, “The shell’s house”. It’s considered as

the most representative monument of civil art from the Catholic Kings’s age. 

Down the street, there are the two Cathedrals:

- The old one was begun during the XIIth and it was

continued in the next centuries. In the exterior, it has a

Byzantine dome.

- The new one was begun in the dawn of the XVIth century;

it was not finished until 1733. The principal front is a

compositive and ornamental ostentation.

Another important monument is the

“Casa Lis”. It is the Art Nouveau and Art

Deco Museum. It is the earliest

modernist building of the city and its

iron galleries and stairs are opened as a

waterfall onto the river Tormes.

Returning to the city centre, you find the University. It is

the oldest University in Spain, inaugurated in the

beginnings of the XIIIth century. The current building

presents a very beautiful facade with the bust of the

Catholic Kings and the mythical Salamanca’s frog. 

IES MARTÍNEZ URIBARRI.

It is a public High School, located in the center of the city. There are about 950 students and

80 teachers. The studies offered there, are:

E.S.O. (Compulsary Secondary School),

“Bachillerato” and Vocational training on

Health, Nursery, Pharmacy and Dentistry,

both Degrees (Medium and High).

Since 2007/08 it offers a Bilingual Section in

French and the possibility of doing the

examination to obtain the DELF and DALF

Diploma(Diplôme d'études en langue

française). During the last years, we have

been doing several exchanges with France (Castres), Germany (Braunschweig) and we are

going to do another one with the United States (Connecticut). We have also taken part in

another Commenius project called “Femina”.

Arts program has four specializations to choose from, Aesthetics and Media, Fashion and

Design, Theatre or Music. The Arts program allows students to theater performances, music,

concerts, fashion shows and photo / film screenings each year for both the school and the

public.

Special education school SEN for students with slighter or more severe learning disability.

Several of our programs have partnership with both university and companies such as;

AstraZeneca Chalmers University of Technology, Universeum (museum), Clothing company

Lindex which prepares students for the various programs for further study or insight into

professional life.

Arts program also has contacts with professional

artists through visits to Theaters, Swedish Television

and Opera. The Arts program allows students to

theater performances, music concerts, fashion

shows and photo / film screenings each year forboth the school and the public. 

Location

Fässbergsgymnasiet is a upper secondary school

which is centrally located in Mölndal, which has 61,000

inhabitants and is located approx , 8 km from Gothenburg.

The school was built in 1963 and it has been modernized since then with auditorium, library

and café. Fässbergsgymnasiet also offer wireless network for all students and the 500

students who attend the school will have its own laptop computer

when they start at school.

Student participation in daily school life

Students have a well-organized body of pupils that actively

organizes various events throughout the school year. To mention

some activity;

Goal kick party” for the new students to get together, our

“Super hero Day” when pupils dresses up as asuperheroes, celebrate Lucia, Spring Festival,

International Women's Day, "Battle of the inner city"

Fässbergsgymnasiet meets some of Gothenburg upper

secondary schools in football tournament.

Fässbergsgymnasiet have had the honor to win the

trophy last year.

Social Science also organizes UN –role play where they be sitting “in the UN”, and try to pushissues from different countries perspectives to learn more about other countries.

Library/Study Centre

The school has a study center consisting of “Läxportalen” where students can get help withtheir studies after class, Also “Sol studion” a place where students with reading and writingdifficulties can get help , and a library with 20,000 books , magazines, newspapers , Internet

access and database. In 2009 the school was chosen as” this year's school libraries” inSweden.
