Education

Water Quality Monitoring Wet LabIn November, the education department hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony at LMC’s brand new Wet Lab. The lab integrates research techniques and equipment with hands-on, inquiry-based science for researchers, public users, teachers, and students. A hub for visiting researchers, the Wet Lab encourages collaboration among users, just steps away from the Atlantic Ocean.

In 2015, the education department at LMC expanded programming for community members, visitors, teachers, and students. Over 50,000 individuals participated in one of 31 distinct programs highlighting sea turtles, marine conservation, and unique ocean ecosystems.

In addition to active research and public engagement, the lab enables teachers and students from around the region to advance their scientific knowledge and abilities. The space is ideal for teacher development workshops, where teachers experience the scientific process through inquiry-based learning techniques, which they can bring back to their classrooms. The program produces advanced STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) curriculum for use throughout the Palm Beach County school district and offers in-house programming for upper-level students interested in pursuing a career in science & technology.

ResearchLMC’s research program is one of the longest running sea turtle monitoring programs in the state of Florida. The program officially began when LMC founder Eleanore Fletcher received her permit from the State of Florida in the early 1970s. For over 25 years, LMC research biologists have been systematically monitoring the nesting sea turtle population along northern Palm Beach County beaches. The three predominant species that nest in Florida are leatherback, loggerhead, and green sea turtles. LMC biologists conducted surveys along Juno, Jupiter/ Jupiter Island beaches from March - October this year. Each season, the research team documents all sea turtle activities along 9.5 miles of beach from the northern Palm Beach County line south to John D. MacArthur Beach State Park.

8

Staff Recorded 16,335 Nests = A Nest Every 3 Feet

• Deepest diving reptile in the world.

• LMC survey area is one of the highest density beaches for the species in the United States.

• Largest clutch size: 169 eggs.

• Record-breaking year: 5,443 nests (previous record was 4,689 in 2013).

• 10,679 nests in 2015.

• In peak nesting season, LMC staff recorded more than 1,000 loggerhead crawls in one night. 9

In 2015, LMC’s research department presented at two preeminent sea turtle conferences: 1) Southeast Regional Sea Turtle Meeting (Georgia): LMC’s team presented insights collected from LMC’s data on Juno Beach pertaining to how beach renourishment impacts loggerhead sea turtles. 2) International Sea Turtle Conference (Taiwan): LMC’s team presented our comprehensive research techniques and survey methods used on LMC’s 9.5 mile stretch of beach in Palm Beach County, Florida, one of the most densely nested beaches in the world.

Sea Turtle Rehabilitation

10The Best Medical EquipmentThese tools enhance diagnostic capabilities and improve patient outcomes and care.

High-Definition Ultrasound Ultra-Advanced Endoscope High-Definition Radiology

• The hospital treated 106 sea turtle patients including: green, hawskbill, Kemp’s ridley, and loggerhead sea turtles.

• 45 sea turtles and 611 hatch- lings were released; 27 remain in rehabilitation.

• A total of 10 turtles were trans- ferred to other rehab facilities, primarily for fibropapilloma treatment.

• We released 4 sea turtles with satellite transmitters.

In 2015: Advanced medical equipment is critical to saving lives. At LMC, those lives are sea turtle patients. Due to generous support from donors, the Gordon & Patricia Gray Hospital is now home to two additional world class machines, which transform patient outcomes and allow our ocean-side campus to serve as a global teaching hub.

LMC’s high-definition ultrasound machine enables hospital staff to clearly examine the intricate anatomy of sea turtle patients. This provides staff with a different

perspective on ailments, allowing them to formulate targeted treatment plans. The second device, the Karl Storz EndoSkope, is the most advanced of its kind. Many of our sea turtle patients have complex internal medical challenges; such as plastic and fishing hook ingestion. The endoscope’s high-definition digital monitor allows LMC’s veterinarian to better examine delicate organs. Should patients need an endo-scopic procedure, the team at LMC now has one of the most advanced tools available.

Expanding our HorizonsThe future of Loggerhead Marinelife Center is bright with our expansion plans to be revealed in 2016.

LMC’s current campus debuted in 2007 to great fanfare, welcoming 100,000 guests. In 2015 LMC’s campus welcomed a record-setting 300,000+ guests and offered the largest portfolio of services and programming in the history of our center, making the campus one of the top visited cultural destinations in Palm Beach County.

Space constraints limit the ability to increase our programming and conservation impact. In 2016 LMC will kick off an ambitious campaign to expand our facility in hopes of allowing our center to rehabilitate more sea turtle patients, educate more students and welcome additional guests and visiting scientist from around the globe.

As you can see from the rendering, our preliminary building plans have started to take shape. Over the next year LMC will educate the public about the critical programs on campus and how this expansion will allow our center to significantly increase our programming impact through educational and scientific experiences.

For more information about our proposed expansion please contact LMC’s development team at 561-627-8280, ext. 103.

15

Our Proposed Expansion Will:• Expand our sea turtle hospital and sea turtle hospital tanks• Expand our research laboratory• Provide new classroom space• Provide presentation spaces for guest lecturers and visiting scientists• Expand our exhibit spaces

Retail OperationsIn addition to off-setting the significant operational costs of LMC’s sea turtle hospital, LMC’s retail outlets are critical to supporting our center’s commitment to provide free admission for our guests.

16

Campus Gift StoreLoggerhead Marinelife Center’s campus gift store continues to proudly serve our guests by offering hundreds of marine-inspired gifts, accessories, and home decor pieces, and extraordinary work from local artists.

Tortuga Café & MarketGuest satisfaction is a very important attribute to LMC’s service offering. To better meet the needs of our guests, we designed the Tortuga Café & Market on campus. This fun, ocean- inspired café and market offers ice cream, healthy snacks, coffee and other various beverages.

Juno Beach PierLMC assumed operations of the Juno Beach Pier in 2014. Over the past year, LMC has significantly invested in Juno Beach Pier operations, which has resulted in an updated Pier House, an advanced food and beverage menu, as well as an assortment of angling and retail items.

Online E-commerce StoreIn 2014, Loggerhead Marinelife Center launched a new e-commerce platform, which offers a user-friendly experience. Online shoppers can purchase ocean and sea turtle inspired merchandise from the comfort of their home or from their mobile device.

With decades of successful management experience, LMC is an established and trusted leader among Palm Beach Counties cultural destinations.

In 2015, FPL and LMC entered into a management agreement allowing LMC to operate Mana-tee Lagoon’s retail operations. LMC and FPL share similar mis-

sions and goals for our facilities and the addition of Manatee Lagoon will further expand the marine animal conservation footprint in Palm Beach County.

Manatee Lagoon will open in early 2016 and in addition to a wonderful educational experi-ence, the center will offer guests free admission and free parking.

2015 Volunteers of the YearCongratulations to Betsy Smith and David Whiteley, two of our many dedicated volunteers that are essential to us carrying out our important mission on a daily basis.

Betsy SmithBetsy Smith has been a volunteer at LMC for ten years, donating more than 3,000 hours in that time. She volunteers in the Education Department and at the Juno Beach Pier to bring our message of conservation to children, adults and families. Betsy is an education docent, leads Living Beaches and volunteers for Turtle Walks and Hatchling Releases. Betsy also

attends outreaches on behalf of LMC, representing or mission in the community with great enthusiasm.

At the Juno Beach Pier, Betsy collects, untangles and cleans used monofilament fishing line every two weeks and then sends it to the monofilament recycling center. In 2015, Betsy helped LMC recycle monofilament line that would stretch more than 20 miles. Betsy also assists with the Kid’s Fishing Clinic at the pier. She teaches young anglers knot tying, casting, species identification, proper release protocols, sea turtle rescue and the importance of recycling.

Betsy has also been an integral part of the Trash Free Seas program (implemented at LMC in 2014). Betsy cleans a .6 mile stretch of beach in Coral Cove about five times per week. The most common items she collects are small bits of plastic. Over 90% of the trash LMC has documented through the Trash Free Seas program has been collected by Betsy.

In addition to her weekly volunteer commitments, Betsy is an integral part of TurtleFest. Each year, Betsy helps coordinate approximately 150 external volunteers to assist with the large event. Betsy recruits and meets with community members and organizations to ensure all of the volunteer needs are met. Betsy’s support creates a successful event.

Betsy is an extremely dedicated volunteer who inspires all of us to persevere and reminds us that everyone can make a difference. We thank Betsy for being such a great addition to the LMC volunteer team.

David WhiteleyDavid Whiteley has been a volunteer at LMC for three years and has donated more than 2,000 hours in that time. David volunteers in the Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Department. He is a responsible rehabilitation permit volunteer that feeds the turtles three times a week. He also spends at least one shift per week helping the staff with treatments and routine husbandry

work. The sea turtle food preparations and procedures have greatly improved due to David’s dedication, donations and advice. David attends nearly all sea turtle releases. He always arrives early to assist with set-up and crowd control during these events.

Along with his sea turtle rehabilitation volunteer duties, David enjoys volunteering for special events including TurtleFest, on campus educational events, and outreaches. David is also a Turtle Walk volunteer each summer. He volunteers for at least two Turtle Walk scouting shifts per week. David is always willing to fill in for extra shifts and helps train our new Turtle Walk scout volunteers each season.

Outside of his regularly scheduled volunteer shifts, David is an active Blue Friends Society member who participates in social events, beach clean-ups and the Go Blue Awards Luncheon.

At the moment, David is currently unable to volunteer due to a major shoulder surgery he underwent in November 2015. However, that does not stop him from supporting Loggerhead Marinelife Center. David has offered any help and support he can while on medical leave from volunteering. He frequently visits to make sure he stays up to date on our sea turtle patients.

David is extremely devoted and loves being a volunteer, part of the LMC family and a sea turtle advocate. We are so grateful to have someone like David Whiteley in the volunteer program. David truly believes in our cause and we are so thankful for all of his dedication to Loggerhead Marinelife Center.
