IntroductionHelp your students “learn how to learn!”

Lay a strong foundation in listening skills, the ability to follow directions, and in the ability to remem-ber what one sees and hears—important skills that students need to be successful both in school and in everyday life. Research has shown that visual and auditory discrimination and memory skills should be taught and that practice is required to improve these skills. The engaging activities found in Listen, Look, and Do! will provide young and special learners with meaningful skill practice.

A wide variety of activities are included: • Stories and Rhymes • Puzzles • Pictures to Color • Cut-and-Paste Activities

• Games • Sequencing Activities

Why We Should Listen

Directions for the teacher: Each child will need a copy of this page, a pencil, and a pink, blue, and red crayon. The teacher should say to the children: “I would like you to listen very carefully and do exactly what I tell you to do to the picture of the rabbit. When we are finished with this page you will understand why it is so important to be a good listener.” 1. Print your name on the line. 2. We listen with our ears. Color the rabbit’s ears pink. 3. When we listen, we should look at the person who is talking. Draw blue circles around the rabbit’s eyes to help us remember to look. 4. We should stop what we are doing when someone talks. Color the stop sign red to help us remember to stop what we are doing and listen to what is being said. If we don’t understand what they are saying we should ask them to repeat it. 5. Turn off distractions so we can be better listeners. Put an “X” on the radio and tele-vision to remind us to turn off extra noise. 6. Ask the children if they can remember some of the “good listening” suggestions.
