The first Thornbridge craft beers were produced in February 2005 in a 10 barrel brewery, housed in the grounds of Thornbridge Hall, Ashford-in-the-Water near Bakewell, Derbyshire. Their beers have gained considerable success with over 200 industry and consumer awards being won in regional, national and international competitions.  A new state of the art 30 barrel brewery at Bakewell was opened in September 2009 with an aim to continue to brew high quality cask, keg and bottled beers and develop new ones through innovation in process and use of ingredients.  The original Hall Brewery continues to operate in developing new, seasonal and speciality beers. Pop into the gift shop at Pavillion Gardens and pick up a bottle or two from local breweries including Buxton Brewery, The Wincle Beer Company and Leek Brewery. The shop is situated alongside the Tourist Information Centre and offers a great choice of boutique gifts together with a selection of works by local artists.

Waitrose is well-known for its support for small producers and the Buxton store offers a good range of beers brewed within a 30 mile radius. Choose from a selection of beers from Thornbridge Brewery in Bakewell, Titanic Brewery in Stoke, Coach House Brewery in Cheshire and Robinsons Brewery in Stockport. The store also boasts a large variety of the more well known British ales, including a number of organic beers. Knowledgeable, friendly staff are on hand to help you make your selection.

Portland Wines offers a good selection of beers from Buxton Brewery, Winkle Brewery in Cheshire, Timothy Taylor in Yorkshire and organic beers from Marble Brewery in Manchester as well as great value wines from local producers. IntroductionThis trail takes in 17 pubs and bars around Buxton town centre, all offering some of the UK’s finest ales and beers. All the venues on the trail are within walking distance of one another and will take you past some of Buxton’s finest historic buildings and architecture.

The pubs and bars along the trail all have something different to offer, some are traditional pubs, rich in heritage, others are modern, quirky establishments, some also offer the opportunity to dine. They are however, all packed with character. Several offer beers produced by local brewers in Buxton or Bakewell whilst others stock well known national brands. Some offer international beers from all over Europe and beyond.

There are so many great places to visit on the trail that you can’t possibly see them all in one trip but you can always come back another day and enjoy your favourite tipple in another of Buxtons’ superb pubs and bars.

Bitburger is available on draught alongside a changing menu of guest ales. Bottled beers include a good selection from Thornbridge Brewery alongside well known brands such as Peroni and Singha. This family friendly pub offers a good selection of Greene King ales including Old Speckled hen, Old Golden Hen, Abbot Ale and IPA. This quirky licensed café offers over a dozen beers from all corners of the globe, from Robinsons Old Tom in Stockport to 312 from Chicago. It also has a good selection of fruit beers, ciders and non-alcoholic beer. The food menu includes breakfast, light bites and afternoon teas. There is outdoor seating to the rear. 13. Bar BrasserieThe Old Courthouse, George Street, Buxton, Derbyshire, SK17 6AYBuilt in the mid 18th Century the building was originally a court house and Masonic Hall. Now home to a number of shops and restaurants including Bar Brasserie which stocks more than 20 bottled beers from all over the world including Black Sheep Ale from Yorkshire, Duvel from Belgium, Lal Toofan from India, Alhambra from Spain and Affligem from France. Krombacher and 1664 are available on draught. The bar offers a ‘beer of the month’ plus a regular specials board and a range of ciders. Non-alcoholic lager is also available. Bar Brasserie is centrally located, offering a relaxed atmosphere under vaulted ceilings. The restaurant serves traditional French food. Centrally located opposite the Opera House and Pavilion Gardens, The New Hall as it was once known was built by the Earl and Countess of Shrewsbury. The Hall was built with the sanction of Queen Elizabeth 1st, to provide accommodation for the captive Mary Queen of Scots. The Old Hall offers a good selection of beer from local producers and micro breweries alongside the more well known Doom Bar. Beers from Buxton Brewery include Buxton Best, Buxton Bitter, Buxton Blonde and Moor Top. Lord Marples, Brother Rabbit and Wild Swan from Thornbridge Brewery and Hartington Bitter from Whim Ales also feature regularly. Traditional and contemporary cuisine is available in the à la carte restaurant.
