3.1 RADIO FUNCTIONS

RDS system

The radio system integrated in the I.C.S.makes it possible to receive RDS (RDS = Ra-dio Data System) signals in the UKW range.

With the RDS system the broadcaster caninsert additional information (station name ormessages) suitably modulating then with theradio signal. This information is then receivedby the RDS system and shown on the display.

AUTO BEST function

When receiving a radio channel with theAUTO BEST function it is possible to obtain alow signal/noise (S/N) ratio, automaticseeking and tuning on alternative frequencieswhere the chosen radio station is broadcast-

Page 20: INTRODUCTION AND SET UP - fiat-lancia.org.rs1.INTRODUCTION AND SET UP Important instructions for use and safety and traffic safety The Alfa Romeo I.C.S. (Integrated Con-trol System)

indicates that you do not want to receive traf-fic bulletins. Station seeking will no longer in-dicate whether it is a TP broadcaster and CCand CD playing will not be interrupted by traf-fic information.

“TP”

The traffic information box (TP) activatedwith knob 11 indicates that you want to re-ceive traffic bulletins. Automatic seeking se-lects a TP broadcaster and displays this pre-rogative: CC and CD playing will be interrupt-ed by any traffic bulletins. The abbreviation“TP” appears on the MAIN page.TP bulletins in progress can be interruptedpressing the volume control 21. Volume ad-justment of a TP bulletin is independent ofthe audio source (radio, CC, CD) and is ob-tained using the volume control 21 during aTP bulletin.

“Mute”

The “Mute” function can be selected only ifTP is enabled and a TP station is set. Whenthe “Mute” function is activated only trafficbulletins will be heard. The radio “Mute”function is disabled turning the volume con-trol 21.

Example: programme set RTL - RAI info-traffic programme

If the infotraffic function is enabled while lis-tening to a programme on the RTL stationand in that moment a traffic bulletin is broad-cast on the RAI channel, the system movesautomatically from RTL to RAI. At the end ofthe traffic bulletin it automatically returnsfrom RAI to RTL.

3.1.1 Radio main functionpage

The main functions are arranged so as to al-low the clear and simple display of informa-tion concerning the radio system. When theradio is operating (CD or CC not activated)the wave band, name or frequency of the cur-rent station are displayed. The list of memo-rised stations and the selection modes “TP”(Infotraffic),”Mute”, “Regional”, “Auto-store”, “Frequency” and “Settings” are alsodisplayed. In the lower part of the displayshows general information such as the time, outside temperature, frequency or other cur-rent status information.

“TP ”The traffic information box (TP) deactivated

ing with a better S/N ratio. When seeking anew tuning frequency broadcasting may bebriefly interrupted temporarily.

The AUTO BEST function is activated auto-matically when the radio function is selectedor when a station is selected through a choicekey and when the cassette player or CD playeris working.

All the RDS broadcasters show their nameor message on the display. The current recep-tion frequency is only displayed if informationabout the name of the station tuned is not.

EON (Enhanced Other Network)

The radio integrated in the I.C.S. systemcan receive EON information.

The signals concerning the EON infotrafficsystem make reception possible from radiochannels, on which you are not tuned at themoment, information about the traffic androads, interrupting the programme of the cho-sen station. This function, available to RDSchannels can be disabled according to prefer-ence.

5. NAVIGATION (NAV)(Optional for markets/versions where applicable)

General information

The integrated navigation system (NAV) al-lows you to reach the selected destinationthrough visual and acoustic instructions. Useof the navigation system is fast, convenient, safe, and above all highly flexible becauseyou can call up already programmed destina-tions or reference points such as hotels, monuments, public structures, fuel stations orAuthorised Alfa Romeo Services.

The instantaneous vehicle position is deter-mined by the GPS system (Global PositioningSystem) installed on board. The on-boardGPS system is fitted with an aerial and a re-ception module integrated in the I.C.S. sys-tem. The system dynamically processes satel-lite signals, those of a sensor on a wheel andof the gyroscope integrated in the navigationcomputer.

The Alfa Romeo navigation systemhelps driver while he drives, bysuggesting vocally or graphically, the optimum routing to reach hispreset destination.

WARNING: Navigation systemsuggestions do not excuse driverfrom his full responsibilities due tohis driving behaviour and to hiscompliance with road and othertraffic regulations. The responsibility for road safety

always lies with vehicle driver, andit falls on him in any case.

Warnings

– GPS reception is difficult under trees, among high buildings, in multi-storey carparks, in tunnels and anywhere satellite aerialreception can be hindered.

– The GPS system needs about 15 minutesfor activation if it is connected to the vehiclebattery.

– The GPS system needs a few minutes todetermine the new position of the vehicle ifit is turned off and the vehicle is moved withthe system off.

– In the lack of satellite information, thesystem uses the information leading from thegyroscope and from the sensor at the wheelfor temporary data analysis.

– The GPS satellite aerial must not be cov-ered with metal or damp objects.

The instantaneous vehicle position is identi-fied in the CD-ROM and shown on the displaytogether with the topographic characteristicsof the area memorised on the CD. Access tothe data on the CD-ROM requires waiting afew moments in the map displays.

The system constantly compares the dataleading from the wheel sensor, the GPS aerialand from the programme to automaticallycompensate changes in temperature, pres-sure or any other occurrence which can falsifyposition detection in any way.

Warnings

– Precise self-adjustment of the navigationsystem requires approx. 50 km of travel thefirst time and when tyres are changed.

– Continuous lack of grip at the wheels (forexample skidding on ice), the system tem-porarily detects an incorrect position.

– During precision self-adjustment the posi-tion is not detected absolutely completely.

The navigation system is managed com-pletely through the I.C.S., therefore the onlyoperations that may be necessary are re-placement of the CD-ROM to set the map ofanother area or an updated map.

– the upper light on means that the powercurrent is on;

– the lower light on means that the CD-ROM is on;

– the lower light flashing means that theCD-ROM is being changed.

Warning

– The navigation system only works withthe CD-ROM inserted in its drive.

– The CD-ROM must be removed andchanged only for updating the system soft-ware, for updating the map or entering mapsrelating to another region.

Changing the CD

– When the I.C.S. is turned on the drive up-per and lower warning lights are lit.

– Press the eject key.

– The previous CD-ROM is ejected and thelower drive led flashes.

– Insert the new CD-ROM.

7.1 EQUIVALENT TEMPERATURE

The system makes it possible to control thepassenger compartment climate maintainingthe “equivalent temperature” level requiredby the driver. This “equivalent temperature”is an estimator of the ideal temperature (ob-tained through the development of a complexpatented mathematical algorithm) needed toobtain the best temperature and well-being inthe passenger compartment.

To bring about this operating condition, se-lect:

– the “equivalent temperature” requiredpressing button 28;

– the AUTO position pressing the button30.

WARNING The compressor can beturned on/off automatically or manually. Toswitch from one operating mode to the othersee the “Compressor on/off button” para-graph in this chapter.

Compressor on/off button

Pressing the ECON button turns the cli-mate control compressor on/off.

WARNING With the compressor off it isnot possible to admit air to the passengercompartment at a temperature below the out-side temperature, in particular environmentconditions, the windows may quickly steam.

Climate control on/offbutton

Pressing the OFF button turns the climatecontrol on/off (including ventilation only).

WARNING With the climate control offand in particular environment conditions, thewindows may quickly steam.

Passenger compartment airdistribution button

Pressing the MODE rocker button towardsthe left and/or right manually selects air dis-tribution in the passenger compartment, while maintaining the objective of the equiva-lent temperature required.

Air recirculation on/off button

Pressing this button engages/disengagesrecirculation of the air admitted to the pas-senger compartment.

WARNING Depending on how the sys-tem is working (heating or cooling the pas-senger compartment) the recirculation func-tion makes it possible to reach the requiredconditions faster. It is however inadvisable touse this function on rainy/cold days as itwould considerably increase the possibility ofmisting the windows, especially if the condi-tioner is off. It is advisable to use this func-tion when the vehicle is stationary in a queueor tunnel to prevent polluted air from enter-ing the passenger compartment. Prolongeduse of this function should however be avoid-ed, especially if there are several personsaboard.

Windscreen and front side windows demisting/

defrosting button

Pressing this button the climate control au-tomatically activates the necessary functions(quantity, distribution, temperature of the airadmitted to the passenger compartment) toquicken demisting/defrosting of the wind-

screen and front side windows. Rearscreenheating, door mirror heating and the resis-tances at the base of the windscreen (in thewiper blade parking area) are also automati-cally engaged (for a determinate length oftime) where applicable.

Rearscreen demisting/defrosting on/off button

Pressing this button engages demisting/de-frosting of the rearscreen, door mirrors and(optional for versions/markets where applic-able) the resistances at the base of the wind-screen (in the wiper blade parking area).

WARNING Do not stick stickers on the in-side of the rearscreen over the heating fila-ments to prevent damage that might adverse-ly affect the system.

7.3 DESCRIPTION OF OPERATINGSTRATEGIES

Operating the button, the cli-mate control system sets to automaticallycontrol the following functions:

– temperature of the air at the vents andoutlets

Page 68: INTRODUCTION AND SET UP - fiat-lancia.org.rs1.INTRODUCTION AND SET UP Important instructions for use and safety and traffic safety The Alfa Romeo I.C.S. (Integrated Con-trol System)

62

– fan speed (constantly changing)

– air distribution

– air recirculation

– compressor engagement.

It is still however possible to intervene man-ually on the following functions:

– fan speed

– air distribution

– air recirculation

– compressor engagement.

The functions activated manually have prior-ity over the automatic ones and they remainmemorised until automatic control is re-acti-vated.

With one or more functions engaged manu-ally, adjustment of the temperature admittedto the passenger compartment still continuesto be controlled automatically by the systemexcept with the compressor off: in fact, inthis condition, the air admitted to the passen-ger compartment cannot have a lower tem-perature than the outside air.

Pressing the button for engag-ing/disengaging automatic operation, thesystem may be in one of the following condi-tions:

– FULL AUTO with automatic control ofthe fan speed and air distribution;

– AUTO with automatic control only of thefan speed or of air distribution according tothe driver’s preference;

– MAN with manual operation where thedriver controls the fan speed and air distribu-tion directly.

Pressing the button turns thecompressor on/off. With the compressor off,the air admitted to the passenger compart-ment can not be cooled or dehumidified andrecirculation is switched off automatically toavoid misting the windows: when wanting toactivate recirculation in this condition, pressthe corresponding button.

Pressing the button again withthe compressor

off, will restore the operating conditions ofbefore the compressor was turned off.

Pressing the button turnsoff/back on the climate control, in the for-mer case air is no longer admitted to the pas-senger compartment which is thus isolatedfrom outside, in the latter, the previous oper-ating mode is restored.

Pressing the button selects thepossible air distributions to the passengercompartment:

Flow of air towards the windscreenand front side windows

Distribution of the flow between thewindscreen/front side windows and lowerpart of the passenger compartment

Main flow of air to the lower part ofthe passenger compartment and secondaryflow of air towards the windscreen/front sidewindows

Distribution of the flow between theupper centre, centre and side dashboard out-lets and rear outlets

Flow of air towards the centre uppervent, centre and side dashboard outlets andrear outlets.

If the system was in the FULL AUTOmode, pressing the button passesto the simple automatism condition: i.e. thesystem chooses the fan speed and mixing toobtain the equivalent temperature required, but will not change the distribution selectedmanually.

Pressing the recirculation button ,the system automatically reactivates the com-pressor if it was deactivated manually or au-

Page 69: INTRODUCTION AND SET UP - fiat-lancia.org.rs1.INTRODUCTION AND SET UP Important instructions for use and safety and traffic safety The Alfa Romeo I.C.S. (Integrated Con-trol System)

63

tomatically; to maintain recirculation with thecompressor of, it is necessary to press the

button to deactivate the com-pressor.

WARNING In this condition (recirculationon and compressor off), remember that thewindows may steam up very quickly.

Pressing the button the climate con-trol automatically activates the functions re-quired to quicken demisting/defrosting of thewindscreen and front s ide windows.Rearscreen heating and door mirror heatingare also automatically engaged (for a deter-minate length of time).

Pressing the button engagesrearscreen heating and door mirror heatingfor a determinate length of time.

Manually setting one of the climate controlfunctions, the others continue to be controlledautomatically; in particular the air tempera-ture is always controlled automatically toreach the required “equivalent temperature”in the passenger compartment.

WARNING When working in the FULLAUTO condition, the system can automati-cally engage recirculation or deactivate thecompressor to cool/heat the passenger com-partment faster or demist/defrost the wind-screen and side windows.

WARNING When the engine is turned offthe system memorises the climate control op-erating condition, which will be automaticallyresumed when the engine is started again.
