Learning Objectives

• To understand what the MIM is, and how it links to Conformance Packages and Message Specifications

• To understand why the MIM has been created• To appreciate when to use the MIM within eHealth

applications.

Presentation Outline

• What is the MIM?• How many versions of the MIM are there?• What does the MIM contain?• What domains does the MIM cover?• How do you access the MIM?• Why is the MIM needed?• How is the MIM developed, and updated?• Why would you use the MIM?• What is the future of the MIM?

Why is the MIM needed?

• Standards –To standardise the way different systems communicate and integrate with each other when sending and receiving messages.

• Flexibility – To provide a number of flexible standards, guidelines, and methodologies by which various healthcare systems can communicate with each other.

Page 15: Introducing the NHS Message Implementation Manual (MIM)

• Development of domain-specific Conformance Packages or Message Specifications.

• Conformance Packages contain a baseline set of data types and infrastructure components that are derived from the appropriate section of the MIM.

• Conformance Packages also include domain-specific artefacts. For example, the vocabulary for each domain.

What is the future of the MIM?

Conclusions

• The MIM provides information to software implementers regarding the use of HL7 V3 messages within NHS IT systems

• It was created as a mechanism to standardise the process of sending and receiving messages

• The MIM covers various health care domains, and will transition to Conformance Packages in the future.
