Slide summary• The world’s first ONE SUN, high temperature, ultra high efficiency solar

collector has been illustrated – the highest theoretical efficiency possible. High temperature collection enables ultra low-cost mineral thermal storage.

• Light Traps require no costly mirrors, offer full acreage solar collection, which represents – about 3 to 4 times more collected solar energy per acre.

• Counterflowing fluids uniquely permit very short infrared and even visible wavelength absorption cutoff Light Trapping at very high temperatures (short wavelength radiation losses are prevented). Record high “Wavelength Selective” efficiency collection has been illustrated.

• Radiant powerplant turbine cooling is readily possible by re-directing turbine waste heat back to the upper cool sides of Light Traps. Thus, a large portion of waste kinetic heat may be reheated by electromagnetic solar energy, while simultaneously radiating a substantial portion of waste heat into space. Electro-magnetic reheating of kinetic energy does not violate Carnot thermodynamics laws. NO SCARCE DESERT WATER EVAPORATIVE COOLING is needed. Desert Light Trap scalability is unlimited. Very large deserts exist on all continents, capable of providing posterity literally many thousands of times more energy with near-zero air/land/water pollution plus many positive climate impacts.

One simple conclusion• The 29-nation member International Energy Agency

(IEA) predicts that “solar thermal” will readily overtake solar “photovoltaic” technology. The urgent question is “when?” The planet can’t wait.

• Low-cost, high temperature, and super efficient Light Traps precisely fits the bill for the very reasons given by IEA – namely, cheap solar-thermal energy storage.

• Without very low-cost storage, solar energy of all kinds amounts to just another energy bandaid for high cost conventional primary energy. Light Traps with Storage has arrived just barely in time.

• A new extremely low reflectivity incident surface coating for near 0% reflection at all solar incident angles from sunrise to sunset.

• An ultra high temperature version of Light Traps, capable of well in excess of 2000oF with one sun applied, which employs “Angular Selectivity” Trapping and employs high temperature counterflowing mixed gas fluids, not hot liquids. Mixed isotope gases are also contemplated. “Angular Selective one sun Light Traps” require tracking, unlike one sun “Wavelength Selective Light Traps” which require no tracking.

• Detailed geometric configurations of low-cost 3000oF porous mineral thermal storage bricks, such a pure SiO2.

• Very low index of refraction CaF2 coated glass, exhibiting only ~1.5% reflection, but which can be frequently water-washed without dissolving the CaF2 coating.
