PSE (Professional Simulation Engineer) Certification allows engineers andanalysts within the international simulation community to demonstratecompetencies acquired throughout their professional career. Independentlyassessed by NAFEMS, the international association of the engineeringanalysis, modelling and simulation community, the certification enablesindividuals to gain recognition for their level of competency and experience aswell as enabling industry to identify suitable and qualified personnel.

The Certification incorporates an extensive range of competencies acrossvarious analysis types. It is multi-level, supporting the philosophy of lifelonglearning and continuous professional development. PSE Certification issuitable for both experienced engineers/analysts and those in the early stagesof their professional career.

Providing a standard of competency for the international simulationcommunity, successful applicants receive recognition as a ProfessionalSimulation Engineer (PSE) at Entry, Standard or Advanced Level. Ascompetencies are developed, PSEs will advance to the next level.

backgroundNAFEMS’ mission is to promote the safe andreliable use of analysis and simulation relatedtechnology. PSE Certification has been developedby NAFEMS to address an emerging need fromthe community for independent verification ofworkplace competency.

PSE Certification provides independent assessmentof PSE Competencies. Defining the competenciesthat a good analysis and simulation engineershould possess, these competencies havebeen peer-reviewed over several years by NAFEMS’technical working groups and external experts andincorporate thousands of statements ofcompetency at various levels.

Successful Certification as a PSE (ProfessionalSimulation Engineer) will enable engineers andanalysts to demonstrate and gain recognition fortheir competency level.

the PSE certification standardPSE Certification is based on the simple concept that the‘Professional Simulation Engineer’ certificate is achieved by anindependent assessment of workplace competency.

The Certification requires the accumulation of competency inworkplace experience in the specification, planning, executionand interpretation of numerical analysis applied to design,simulation or product verification, and adequate performancein executing these functions to a high standard. It also requirescompetency of an appropriate level of underpinning theoreticalknowledge and sufficient product knowledge to enable theanalyst to understand the context, purpose and value of his/heranalysis work.

PSE Certification targets both the experienced analyst and thenewcomer to simulation. The experienced simulation engineeris required to present documented and attested evidence ofacademic and workplace competency to become certified. Anappropriately qualified newcomer to simulation is expected tofollow a structured training programme under the guidance ofa suitably qualified Industrial Mentor.

technology areas coveredPSE Certification is broad-based and designed with the long term aim of covering numerical analysis of any description used in engineeringdesign, simulation and product verification. Currently, certification covers the following technical areas:

There are two core modules – Core Finite Element Analysis and Core Computational Fluid Dynamics. For applicants applying for certification in these modules, they mustdemonstrate an understanding of the fundamental principles of the topic and how these principles can be applied to solve practical problems. Each core module should beconsidered as a building block which can serve as a foundation to the other modules within PSE Certification that relate to more specific applications of FEA or CFD.

The certification is appropriate foranalysts/simulation engineers at any point in theircareer. As the qualification is multi-level, it issuitable for experienced analysts and those who arenewcomers to analysis.

PSE recordOnce the declared competencies have beenassessed and certified to meet the PSE certificationrequirements, NAFEMS maintains this informationwithin the ‘Record of Professional SimulationEngineers’, recording the current level ofcompetency for those assessed. This is updated asindividuals achieve new areas and level ofcompetency.

Prospective employers of simulation engineers mayobtain confirmation of an individual’s status andcurrent competency level from NAFEMS.

PSE Certification complements the PSE Competency Tracker –An Online Competency Framework and Management Systemfor Simulation Engineers. Applicants can use the Tracker to plantheir competency development to prepare and support theirapplication.
