I wrote your name in

I wrote your name in

———————————
During my career I have
opened two new facilities,
and led three facility teams
to make changes in operations ensuring residents receive quality care
and services and staff enjoy
coming to work.
Also, as Adjunct Assistant Professor of Gerontology
at Bowling Green State University, I taught
Gerontology for eleven semesters to a variety of
majors.
I have a strong work ethic and strong personal values.
I believe my democratic management style and open
door policy allow residents, staff and family members
alike to share ideas, concerns and also to remind us
of what they believe we do well.
Thanks to all of you for the warm welcome!
Long-time LHCR Board Member Paul
Doncevic is a shining example of some-
one who contributes to our community
with extraordinary zest.
Paul makes a difference by serving
others. He was nominated by
CEO Charlie Rinne for recognition in the
“Celebrate Age” exhibit at the
LeadingAge 50th Anniversary in
Washington D.C.
At a recent LHCR Board Meeting,
Mission Outreach Liaison Janice Snyder
presented Paul with a LeadingAge
certificate honoring his volunteer work:
for strategic planning for the strong
future of LHCR, for transporting
residents to Chapel, and for offering
emotional support to staff, residents, and
their caregivers. Thank you, Paul!
Paul Doncevic (left) began serving on the LHCR
Board of Directors in 2005 at the age of 77.

Caring for the Caregiver Support Group
Caregivers are often so
concerned with caring for their loved one’s needs
that they lose sight of their
own well-being. A FREE

burg scrapbook project says the theme of the next
page will highlight winter activities the residents
have enjoyed throughout the years. Volunteer John
Prim will be leading a craft session on Norwegian
paper heart making. We are blessed to have such
dedicated and creative volunteers!

NEWS NUGGETS
After 11 years, our beloved Lutheran Home cat, Salem, has retired from his “service cat” tour of duty. Salem has served our resi-dents in a special way with his own brand of “pet therapy”. Chaplain Jim Kulma blessed Salem at our Bless-ing of the Pets last fall. In turn, Salem blessed lone-ly residents with a feeling and memory of home and served as a companion to staff members around campus, with favorite stops in Nursing and Accounting. It was never bad luck when Salem crossed your path… Contrary to the old saying, “As nervous as a cat in a room full of rocking chairs”, Salem fearlessly ventured into rooms filled with people in wheel-chairs and made himself quite at home! But as workers reach retirement age, so did Salem. We will miss him dearly. He is a gentle feline who has brought infinite joy and happiness to residents
and staff. Salem is now in his own “rest home” under the wonderful care of one of his previous owners. He joins another elderly cat in the home, where they enjoy naps on a sunny porch. Lucky cat! (see photos of Salem on page 5.) The 2nd Annual Taste of Home Cookie Walk earned $929.75 towards the purchase of benches for the large interior courtyard. Thanks to all who baked and shopped! Celebrating 80 Years of Our Heritage of Care. The Lutheran Home was established in 1932, and there will be 80th Anniversary celebrations all year. Please save the date May 18 for the GALA Celebration Dinner Dance from 6-11 p.m. at LaCentre in Westlake. Tickets are $50 per person and go on sale April 1. Starting this month, Art Therapy will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday mornings. The change was made so that residents could continue to participate in both Tai Chi and Art Therapy. Tai Chi with Jim Kulma is offered on Mondays and Thursdays in the Chapel.
Don Allen Street Assisted Living Resident, Air Force Staff Sergeant Donald E. Allen (Retired), recently had a street named for him on the Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in North Carolina. The letter of approval was signed by General Norton A. Schwartz, Chief of Staff, highest ranking officer in the Air Force. Don Allen was a ground crewman with the 4th Fighter Group's 334th Squadron. During World War II, while in England, Don painted “nose art” on at least 39 planes--at the request of his squadron's pilots on the various aircraft types the squadron flew over the three years it was deployed to England with the 8th Air Force.
Many of the planes he painted were flown by the war's most famous aces.
A reception was held for Don Allen & his family to celebrate the
approval of a street named for him on the Seymour Johnson Air
Force Base in North Carolina.

A Fond Farewell
to Salem (retired)
On a Cat Ageing
by Alexander Gray
He blinks upon the hearth-rug, and yawns in
deep content, accepting all the comforts that
Providence has sent. Louder he purrs, and
louder, in one glad hymn of praise for all the night's adventures, for quiet,
restful days. Life will go on for ever, with all that cat can wish: warmth
and the glad procession of fish and milk and fish.
Only one thought disturbs him. He's noticed once or
twice, the times are somehow breeding a nimbler
race of mice.
