Polybutylene pipe can be repeatedly bent to a radius no less than 10 times the outside diameter of the pipe e.g. 15mm pipe can be bent to a radius of 160mm

Temperature/Pressure

The below graph sets out the limits of polybutylene pipe in relation to temperature and pressure. It is an established fact that as the temperature of the water carried in a polybutylene pipe rises then the allowable pressure must decrease. The temperature and pressure limits below are absolutes and should not be exceeded.

The Magic Seal – How to do it

The Qicktite ‘magic seal’ cone

The Qicktite ‘magic seal’ cone is a key part of the fitting design manufactured from polybutylene, the same material as the pipe and shares the same unique performance characteristics as the pipe.

The special shape is designed to ‘marry’ itself to the fitting body and pipe surface when the joint is tightened providing a long lasting watertight seal.

Better sealing to metal threads

The ‘magic seal’ cone is designed to provide a leak free seal to metal threads without the need for sealant tape.

All female end Qicktite fittings, including wingback elbows are fitted with a ‘magic seal’ cone to make tap, valve and fixture connections easier.

The Magic Seal – How to do it

The Qicktite joint is simple and fast to make requiring only a pipe cutter, spanner or wrench to complete

Cut pipe end clean and square, slip the nut onto the pipe

Position the stainless steel grip ring on the pipe followed by the cone

Leave 5mm of the pipe protruding past the cone

Insert assembly end into fitting body and hand tighten until fitting ‘squeaks’

Then tighten a further 1 ½ turns with a spanner or wrench

Installing Dux Pipe

When installing polybutylene pipe it is important to ensure that the pipe is supported, this prevents the pipe from rubbing on rough surfaces or coming into contact with hot surfaces. The below chart sets the recommended distances between pipe clips in both a horizontal and vertical installation.

NominalPipe Size

Dux PB Pipe

Horizontal or Graded Pipes

DN 18 15mm 0.6m 1.2m

DN 22 20mm 0.7m 1.4m

Do not use metallic hangars or clips, these can have sharp edges that will cut into the wall of the pipe.Ensure that the pipe can move freely in the pipe clip, (polybutylene pipe expands approximately 13mm per 10°C) pipe clips that are too small or ‘pinching’ the pipe will prevent this natural movement.

Installing Dux Pipe

Tension

Do not pull pipe tight during installation as this will restrict pipe during expansion and contraction

Heat Sources

Avoid installing polybutylene pipe near a direct heat source, polybutylene should be installed as a minimum 500mm away from extreme heat sources such as flues or wet back circulation pipes

Changes of direction

To ensure no unnecessary stress is placed on the pipe during a change of direction, the pipe must be adequately supported and should be clipped as shown

Page 10: INTRODUCING DUX PRO-FIT QICKTITE THE MAGIC … · pipe cutter, spanner or wrench to complete. Cut pipe end clean and square, ... Nominal Pipe Size . Dux PB Pipe: Horizontal or Graded

Installing Dux Pipe

Bending

Polybutylene pipe can be repeatedly bent and flexed with no affect to the integrity of the pipe however the minimum radius should be 10 x the outside diameter of the pipe. Bending further will run the risk of kinking the pipe. If kinking occurs the section should be cut out and replaced.

Concrete

Where polybutylene pipe enters or leaves a concrete slab or block wall the pipe should be protected with a sleeve to prevent rubbing against the sharp edges, the sleeve should protrude approximately 150mm and should be taped up and sealed to prevent ingress of concrete particles.

Direct Sunlight

Polybutylene pipe is recommended to be installed away from direct sunlight as the UV rays can affect the pipes pressure capabilities over time. It is recommended that pipe that needs to be installed in an outdoor situation be run in a sheath or conduit, alternatively the pipe can be painted with a good acrylic based paint.

Code Of Practice

System IdentificationAll polybutylene pipes and fittings are identified with the Dux name and are manufactured to fine tolerances. Ensure that only pipe and fittings branded in this way are used to guarantee satisfactory performance.

Electrical EarthingPolybutylene is a non-conductive material and must NOT be used for the earthing of electrical installations or equipment, or for dissipating static charges. Electrical supply authorities shall be advised by the installer where any parts of an existing metallic water supply pipeline is replaced by polybutylene.

Storage and HandlingDux polybutylene should be stored under cover to avoid unnecessary dirt accumulation and possible damage. Its flexibility permits considerable freedom of handling but care should be taken not to cut, abrade or crush the pipe. All fittings should be treated in a similar manner. It is recommended that polybutylene pipe not be stored in direct sunlight as UV light can over time affect the pipes capability to withstand higher pressures. It is therefore recommended to ensure the pipe is stored under cover.

CuttingIt is important to ensure that cut ends of pipe are square and clean. Polybutylene pipe can be cut with plastic pipe cutters which have a thin, finely honed cutting blades or wheels designed specifically for the purpose.

BendingPolybutylene pipe can be flexed without harm, the recommended minimum bending radius is ten times the pipe diameter. Where tighter bends are required a fitting must be used. Care should be taken to avoid over bending and kinking of the pipe. Pipe which has been kinked should not be used.

Installation Timber FrameworkPolybutylene may be installed in the traditional manner by running in notches or chases, or by surface mounting. However the preferred method is to run the pipe through holes drilled through the neutral axis (centre) of studs, dwangs (noggings) or joists. The holes shall be a minimum of 3mm larger then the pipe’s outside diameter in order not to cut or abrade the pipe.

Page 15: INTRODUCING DUX PRO-FIT QICKTITE THE MAGIC … · pipe cutter, spanner or wrench to complete. Cut pipe end clean and square, ... Nominal Pipe Size . Dux PB Pipe: Horizontal or Graded

Code Of Practice

ConcreteIf installing polybutylene in concrete, the following installation techniques can be employed.

1. Pipe to be laid in continuous lengths with all joints made outside the slab or in a fully accessible position.

2. Pipe can be secured to wire mesh reinforcement with a minimum of one tie every three metres on straight runs and one tie every 500mm where a change of direction takes place

3. Pipe should be positioned at least 20mm above the gravel bed and 25mm below the finished slab surface.

4. The installed system should be leak tested at a minimum of 690 kPa (100 PSI) pressure and at room temperature for at least 30 minutes prior to slab pouring. This pressure should be maintained while the concrete is being placed.

Any physical damage to the pipework during concrete placement will be immediately apparent by loss of pressure and can be rectified before the concrete slab is finished.

BrickworkPolybutylene may be concealed with a cement render in brickwork or concrete chases. Pipe shall be wrapped in a flexible material with a minimum thickness of 1.6mm. Fittings should be readily accessible.

HeatThe systems are recommended for hot water plumbing reticulation at maximum temperature/pressure of 80°C at 760 kPa. While higher temperatures and pressures can be safely handled, these would reduce the life expectancy of the system. where temperatures higher than 60°C are regularly attained, use of a tempering valve close to the cylinder outlet would be recommended. A tempering valve would also protect against accidental scalding particularly where children or elderly people are concerned. The distributors should be consulted regarding applications involving continuous use at temperatures above 60°C. a direct flame must not come into contact with the pipe or fittings.

Warnings1. There must be a minimum of 500mm clearance between a polybutylene pipe and any

portion of a gas or oil fired heater flue.2. Polybutylene is not recommended for use in the collector area of a solar panel system.

it is however, generally suitable for use as circulating pipes to solar panels, providing that maximum continuous pressure and temperatures detailed above are not exceeded.

Page 16: INTRODUCING DUX PRO-FIT QICKTITE THE MAGIC … · pipe cutter, spanner or wrench to complete. Cut pipe end clean and square, ... Nominal Pipe Size . Dux PB Pipe: Horizontal or Graded

Code Of Practice

Hot Water HeatersLow pressure (heads up to 7.6metres) and mains pressureA minimum of 500mm of metal pipe must be used from the outlet of the cylinder, Dux brass fitting are recommended when connecting polybutylene pipe to metal outlet pipe and to the inlet of the cylinder.

Low Pressure InstallationsTake care when installing low pressure pipework that sufficient falls are allowed to prevent air locking. Straight lengths of pipe should be used where air locking is likely to be a problem.

Instantaneous Water HeatersA minimum of 500mm of metal pipe must be installed on both the inlet and outlet connections. Temperature and pressure recommendations should not be exceeded.

Circulating Ring-Main Hot Water SystemWhen connecting polybutylene to a continuously circulating hot water supply metal ring-main reticulation or plumbing loop, the ring-main should be treated as forming part of the hot water heater. The ring-main pipe must be metal and a minimum of 500mm of metal pipe must be used between the ring-main and any polybutylene lateral pipe line.NOTE: Polybutylene is not recommended for use as circulating pipes to wetbacks or boilers.

ExpansionThe linear expansion rate for polybutylene pipe is approximately 13mm per 10°C temperature change for every 10m of pipe. Make allowance for expansion based on this value. For most installations, this low expansion rate combined with the pipes flexibility eliminate the need to allow for expansion. Pipes must not be anchored rigidly.

SupportsThe maximum spans between supports shall be one metre. In low pressure installations where air locking may be a problem, support the pipe at 600mm centres maximum. Use only purpose made clips which have been designed to permit free thermal movement.NOTE: Do not use bare metal clips.

InsulationIndependent research has shown that any type of pipe carrying hot water intermittently , as in most plumbing situations, is probably best left uninsulated. Insulation, to be effective under these conditions should be to an industrial specification with a minimum thickness of 20mm.

Page 17: INTRODUCING DUX PRO-FIT QICKTITE THE MAGIC … · pipe cutter, spanner or wrench to complete. Cut pipe end clean and square, ... Nominal Pipe Size . Dux PB Pipe: Horizontal or Graded

Code Of Practice

SweatingSweating or condensation may occur under certain temperatures and humidity conditions. However this would be at a lower rate than other types of pipe.

Burial UndergroundPolybutylene pipe must be buried at a minimum of 450mm below finished ground level. if under roadways, consult the local authority. The bottom of the trench must be smooth and free from sharp projections with preferably 75mm of sand. The first 150mm of overlay material must be clean spoil or smooth metal with a maximum particle size of 14mm and be well compacted. Backfill material should then be placed on the pipe overlay and compacted to refill the trench. Pressure testing before backfilling is good trade practice and is strongly recommended.

Water Hammer and SurgePolybutylene can eliminate water hammer because of its high elastic modulus. It dampens rather than propagates pressure waves and the associated pipe noise. Under extreme conditions of service, water hammer arrestors may be advisable.

FreezingIce formation causes no damage as the pipes flexibility accommodates expansion. The pipe will return to its original state upon thawing. DO NOT use a direct flame to assist thawing. It must be pointed out, however, that a small section of polybutylene pipe in an otherwise rigid system cannot protect the pipe system from the effects of freezing. Only where a significant proportion of polybutylene pipe is used, will the effects of freezing be minimised.

Joints and ConnectionsPolybutylene pipe must not be threaded. Pipe and fittings cannot be solvent welded or glued. Where necessary, use PTFE tape for thread sealing. Do not use hemp or other sealant.

Pipe to Qicktite fitting JointFittings are secured to the pipe by an Acetal nut, Uni-directional stainless steel retaining ring and a polybutylene cone. Simply slip on the nut, the ring and the cone and tighten the nut onto the fitting firmly by hand. Then give at least one further full turn with a spanner or wrench. (During final tightening you will hear a squeaking noise. This is normal and should not affect completion of the tightening).NOTE: Before assembling the joints, check that the pipe end under the cone is free from serious cuts or longitudinal scores, which might affect the quality of the joint. Also ensure the stainless steel ring is fitted with the prongs facing towards the end of the pipe. Fitting the wrong way will result in an unsatisfactory seal.

Dux Acetal Socket Joint(e.g. Lugged Elbows [wingbacks] and female adaptors)

1. Dux Plugged NippleScrew the nipple into the socket firmly hand tight. Then give at least one further full turn with the wrench. (During final tightening you will hear a squeaking noise. This is normal and should not affect completion of the tightening). After pressure testing, cut off the blanked end to length required without removing the nipple from the socket.2. Plastic and Metal Male Threads to Lugged Elbows (Wingbacks)Measure the length of nipple from the outside face of the Dux fitting. add 12mm to that length, so that a seal can be made up to the cone. Make sure that the end of the thread is square and clean. Screw the male thread into the socket at least one full turn past hand tight.3. Qicktite Adaptors/Swivel Nut ConnectorsMake sure that the end of the male thread is square and clean. Screw the male thread into the socket or the swivel nut onto the thread at least one full turn past hand tight.NOTE: Do not use taper thread fittings (e.g. barrel nipples)

Male Dux Thread to Socket JointUse only PTFE tape to seal these joints. This is the only joint which does not have a cone seal and therefore it relies on a thread seal. Due to the variations in metal threads, trouble may be experienced in obtaining a satisfactory long term seal using this method.NOTE: To enable the PTFE tape to grip the thread, it is recommended that the thread is first roughened with a file.

ACETAL FittingsIn certain applications, the use of Acetal fittings is not recommended. For these applications, use copper or brass fittings.

1. Continuous exposure to acid conditions (pH of 4 or less) or exposure to acid fluxes.2. High temperature, closed loop water systems which can become acidic such as baseboard

heating, solar heating primary loops, etc.3. Connection to galvanised pipe or fittings or high zinc content brass fittings.

In the latter installations, zinc salts can be leeched out of the metal fitting and become trapped in the Acetal threads, particularly under humid conditions at elevated temperatures. Zinc salts attack Acetal which leads to a breakdown of the fitting.

AdaptionsWhen connecting Dux polybutylene pipe to other than a Dux fitting, it is recommended that the pipe be connected onto a male BSP thread utilizing the Magic Seal cone for the seal.

QicktiteQicktite fitting threads are always one size larger than the internal diameter (ID) of the pipe. See table below:

One of the following can be used to make the adaption.

Same Size Connections(e.g. 18mm OD [15mm ID] pipe to 15mm male thread

Reducing Connections(e.g. 18mm OD [15mm ID] pipe to 20mm male thread

Use a cone, ring and nut (NCRN) set and make a Qicktite joint onto the male thread.NOTE: When connecting in this manner to a 20mm or 25mm male thread, an NCRN set which includes a grey cone must be used to ensure a satisfactory seal.

RepairsAny damaged pipe or fittings must be replaced . Pipe which has been accidently kinked due to overbending is considered damaged. Because the pipe is not particularly notch sensitive, minor cuts and abrasions can be accepted. Cuts or abrasions seriously reducing wall thickness should be cut out.

Qicktite JointsQicktite joints can be repeatedly made and undone without harm to the joint. However, it may be wise to replace the stainless steel ring or polybutylene cone if these become deformed or damaged. Should any joint leak, simply tighten the nut a little more. If the joint continues to leak, dismantle and check that the stainless steel ring is correctly positioned and that the pipe surface is smooth, clean and free from longitudinal cuts or scores.
