Roald Dahl began to write his first classic children’s novel, James and the Giant Peach in 1959. As he watched a cherry growing on a tree in his back garden, he wondered what might happen if it never stopped. From a small scrawled sentence in one of his ‘Ideas Books’— exercise books that Roald would jot down random thoughts in— the plot grew into the story that we know and love so well: James’ adventures aboard a giant peach with his insect friends. A bedtime story for his children, it was soon adored by young readers the world over, and even spawned an award winning feature film in 1996. First published in the USA in 1960, James and the Giant Peach marked the beginning of Roald Dahl’s prolific career as a children’s author, and is still a favourite nearly 60 years later.
