I. Lesson Points:

1. Wa: The particle wa is used to identify the subject of a sentence. So for example in lesson we gave the following sample sentence: Watashi wa gakusei desu. (I am a student) wa in this sentence shows the speaker who the statement is about. In this case the subject of the sentence is watashi.

2. Desu: is a word that is used in Japanese to declare something as being. It is similar to the English words 'is, am, are'. The u on the end is silent or whispered.

3. Desuka? Using ka at the end of a statement turns it into a question.

Sample Sentences:

re wa nan de(What is this?)Kore wa nan desu ka?

re wa hon de(This is a book.)Kore wa hon desu.

re wa nan de(What is that?)Sore wa nan desu ka?

re wa ne de(That is a cat.)Sore wa neko desu.

re ware no nede(That is his cat)Sore wa kare no neko desu.

re wa nan de(What is that over there?)Are wa nan desu ka?

re wade(That is a house)Are wa ie desu.

re wa wata no de(This is my house.)Kore wa watashi no ie desu.

re wa wata no heya de(That is my room.)Are wa watashi no heya desu.

re ware noruma(That is his car.)Are wa kare no kuruma desu.

Dorere no tsu de(Which one is his desk?)Dore ga kare no tsukue desuka?

re wa re no tsude(This is his desk.)Kore wa kare no tsukue desu.

Dorenu de(Which one is his dog?)Dore ga kare no inu desuka?

re re nu(That is his dog.)Are ga kare no inu desu.S-4-1

III. Writing Practice: Hiragana (Sa, Shi, Su, Se, So)

Coverting S sounds to Z sounds (Za, Ji, Zu, Ze, Zo):

Z sounds are made the same way we made G sounds from the Ka line. Except for the Z sounds we use the Sa line and add the tenten mark to each one. See the examples below.

Practice writing the following words in Hiragana
