The Cycle of Analysis

The Cycle of Analysis is one popular approach that is useful for analysing and developing your performance as part of your performance improvement programme. Using the Cycle of Analysis, you collect information about your performance in an organised way. In this way you identify and assess specific aspects of your performance. Study the four stages of the Cycle of Analysis in diagram 1. These four stages can be applied effectively to basketball to help develop and improve your performance.

Structures and Strategies – General Information

A Structure is the design, formation or organisation that a team uses.

Strategies consider how different structures can be applied.

Any structure or strategy concerns either creating attacking opportunities for your own team or denying attacking opportunities for the opposing team. This is achieved by…

creating / using / denying / controlling space on the court;controlling the tempo / pace of the game;creating overload situations.

The three structures / strategies we will examine are:

Fast Break (Attack)Man-to-Man (Defence)Zone (Defence)

Roles and Responsibilities in Basketball

When playing as part of a group or team, it is essential to understand what your individual responsibilities are and how your role relates to the roles of your teammates. The success of any strategy depends on how well the team operates as a unit, with each player performing his or her own role to the best of their ability.

The individual role you adopt in a group or team activity will be dependant on many factors. These may include your physical attributes and your ability as a skilled performer, including your decision-making qualities. When each individual’s attributes and qualities are considered, then a relevant structure or strategy can be planned.

The Point Guard / Feed

normally one of the smaller players in the team; responsible for bringing the ball up court to initiate the team’s

attack; need to be able to protect the ball from the opposition; most of their scoring opportunities will come from either driving

(dribbling) to the basket for a lay up or shooting from outside the key area

the player most likely to attempt three point shots.

A talented guard will be able to use their dribble to move close to the basket, not necessarily for a shot, but to draw the defence towards them so that they can pass the ball off to a team mate in a better position for the shot. This demands that they can also pass the ball and are able to “read” the movements of team mates so they can pass at the right time.

The player who takes the guard position is frequently one of the most experienced players because from this position they will direct their team’s attacking play. For this reason they are often referred to as the “playmaker”.

4

Page 7: Intro - WordPress.com€¦  · Web viewRoles and Responsibilities in Basketball. When playing as part of a group or team, it is essential to understand what your individual responsibilities

The Centre

usually the tallest player in the team and plays close to the basket;will be able to make shots from close to the basket (usually under pressure from close marking opponents);will have good footwork so they can free themselves in the area under the basket to receive a pass and move in strongly for a shot;will have the ability to keep their position close to the basket under pressure from defenders;will be able to rebound strongly.

The Forward

play either on the right or left hand side of the court;will be among the taller players in the team;will be able to drive in to the basket and perform accurate lay-ups;will be able to shoot from the corners and sides of the court.;must be prepared to set screens to help free a teammate for a drive or shot;must be prepared to move in to gain attacking rebounds should a shot be missed.

Good use of players will ensure a balanced spacing and will mean that team members do not get in each other’s way. It also ensures that sufficient players are positioned with responsibility to move in for the attacking rebound and to delay the opponent’s outlet pass.

Here is an example of different players’ attacking responsibilities in basketball in order of importance:

Fast Break-AttackFast Break-Attack A im : To try to score a basket as fast as possible, once we gain possession of the ball, before our opponents are able to get back into their defensive positions. If we get the ball up the court quickly, we can catch the opposition off-guard and score an easy/unopposed basket with a high percentage shot (e.g. lay-up).Description:

Starts with the aggressive defence of our team e.g. a defensive rebound, steal or turnover;Make a quick outlet pass to player out wide, away from the crowded key;

Decision making:- take the ball to the middle drawing the defence while giving team members time to get up court;- make a long pass to a team member who has gone deep into opposition’s court;- take the ball by yourself if you are unopposed and have a free run at the basket;

Decision made will depend on the position of team and opposition;

The other players in the team support the ball carrier and fill thethree lanes creating passing options;

They move quickly down the court to get ahead of the ball and tocreate an overload situation (e.g. 3v1);

The attacking team need to take the early shot and, ideally, finishwith a successful lay-up;

7

Page 10: Intro - WordPress.com€¦  · Web viewRoles and Responsibilities in Basketball. When playing as part of a group or team, it is essential to understand what your individual responsibilities

The opposite forward moves in to cover for a rebound in case of a missed shot;

The guard waits at the top of the key to provide support and passing options.

Communication is essential when performing the fast break to ensure your team work as a unit.

Factors to consider when selecting the fast break

Is my team a fast team in terms of speed fitness and can therefore catch opponents off-guard and leave them behind?

Do we have quick ‘off the ball’ movement?

Are we good in defence:- tall players who can win rebounds therefore can start up

attacking strategy i.e. fast break?- make steals – start up fast break?

Are we good at lay-ups – when we get the ball up the court there is a high percentage of baskets scored?

Do we have players with good passing ability that can help to control the tempo of the game?

Do we want to score quickly at a certain time in the game, e.g.:- at the beginning to gain a lead?- before/after half time?- when your opponents are tiring?- if you are behind?

Is my team fitter and faster than my opponents. Did you notice this the last time you played them. Are some of the opposition slow at getting back?

8

Page 11: Intro - WordPress.com€¦  · Web viewRoles and Responsibilities in Basketball. When playing as part of a group or team, it is essential to understand what your individual responsibilities

Are our opposition much better when the game is slow and structured? Using a fast break speeds up the whole game forcing errors.

Importance of ‘width / depth / mobility’ when applying fast break

WidthOnce the rebound is secured the rebounder pivots away from the basket and makes an outlet pass to a team mate who has moved out wide.

This initial width means the ball can be quickly moved away from the basket catching the opposition off guard. Once the outlet pass has been made the receiver has 3 options- to take the ball to the middle- to make a long cross court pass to a team mate moving

down the opposite side of the court - to take the ball themselves and penetrate towards the

basket

Filling the 3 lanes stretches the defence, creating space. when we have to take the ball to the middle and our team mates sprint ahead of the ball. This width creates passing opportunities and often ends with overload situations such as 3 v 2 or 2 v 1.

Depth In the fast break the aim is to get people ahead of the ball carrier. This is achieved when the players fill 3 lanes and move down court as a unit. If the fast break is unsuccessful or if we need to slow down the attack the feed should hold back at the top of the key to provide cover and support.

people behind the ball provide support and delay.

9

Page 12: Intro - WordPress.com€¦  · Web viewRoles and Responsibilities in Basketball. When playing as part of a group or team, it is essential to understand what your individual responsibilities

Mobility players should be able to time appropriate moves into space or to the basket.players should be able to assume various roles and react to the attacking situation as it develops. It is also important for the ball carrier to commit the defence, for the players to stretch the defence, to allow penetrative cuts towards the basket. Players need to penetrate the defence to try to win the rebound and keep possession.

Importance of teamwork when applying the fast break

Co-operationThe importance of teamwork is to support and stimulate each other. A feature of good teamwork is the application of the correct game plan at an appropriate time to meet the demands of performance.Tactics involve decision-making processes relating to the ball, the opponents, the available space, and the strengths and weaknesses of individual players.Different situations will demand the selection of various options to meet the demands of match play. Success will be dependent upon how well players relate to each other when a problem arises.

CommunicationEffective communication will help to determine the best response to a game incident. This can be obtained in a number of ways:

Verbal signal- a call given to provide information to a particular player telling where to move /when to move.Visual signal- a player putting his hand in front of him indicating he is ready to receive a pass.Body positioning- to indicate to other players the space where you want to receive the ball.

Group DynamicsIn team games the interaction between the team members is very important to the success of the team, particularly in tight competitive matches.

10

Page 13: Intro - WordPress.com€¦  · Web viewRoles and Responsibilities in Basketball. When playing as part of a group or team, it is essential to understand what your individual responsibilities

Personal qualities such as enthusiasm, determination, self-discipline, tolerance, and being supportive, are all valued highly in an effective team. For example, in a fast break it is extremely important that all players are alert and determined to move fast when the ball is won and to work together to get the ball down the court quickly and under control.

Players’ roles within the fast break

When playing as part of a group or team, it is essential to understand what your individual responsibilities are and how your role relates to the roles of your teammates.

Role of the Feed:Move wide into space away from opposition to receive outlet pass.Shout for the ball (communicate) to ensure a quick and accurate outlet passMake the decision as to which option to use (option 1, 2 or 3)Dribble the ball down the middle of the courtControl the speed of the attack i.e. slow down (delay) if necessary to allow the forwards to get ahead of the ball.Pass to a free forward once I get to the top of the keyStay at the top of the key to provide support and options.

Role of the Forward:Box out to secure the reboundPivot away from the basket and make an outlet passFollow the pass and move to fill the outside channelIf I didn’t receive the rebound, I would move to the opposite side and fill the outside channelFill the three lanesMove quickly to get ahead of the ballShout for the ball if freeDrive in and take the early/easy/high percentage shot (lay-up)Be ready for the rebound if shot is missed.

11

Page 14: Intro - WordPress.com€¦  · Web viewRoles and Responsibilities in Basketball. When playing as part of a group or team, it is essential to understand what your individual responsibilities

Responsibility of all Players:Team must work as a unitAll team members must react quickly and co-operate andcommunicate with one another to ensure success of the strategyDelay in defenceIf a fast break is not possible team should regroup and set up an attack (feed making the plays)All players have a responsibility to watch the ball, defend well and try to make steals.

Strengths and weaknesses in our fast break

Strengths

Making the outlet pass from the rebounder

Filling the three lanes

Controlling the speed of play and delaying the attack if necessary

Passing accurately and at the correct time to the forwards

Staying at the top of the key to provide depth and support

Driving to the basket for a lay-up

Weaknesses

Don’t win rebounds therefore can’t start up fast break

Don’t ‘box out’ in the key

Don’t react quickly enough to the break

Don’t move out quickly for the outlet pass

Don’t move quickly ahead of the ball

Wrong decision made (from the 3 options)

Too slow in making decisions therefore lose the elements of surprise and speed

Inaccurate long pass

No offensive rebound if our players miss the lay-up

Fast Break - Programme of Work 1

To improve winning rebounds and boxing out:

1v1 and 2v2 games at a basket

To improve decision making:

3v0, 3v1, 3v2, 3v3

In 3v0 the players go through the motions of all three decision making processes without the complication of a defender. E.g. A player rebounds the ball then the team practise the long pass, taking the ball to the middle and taking the ball by him or herself.

In 3v1 a defender chooses one player to mark and this helps the decision making process by making the team choose one of the other two options left.

In 3v2 the pressure to make a decision is increased by adding in a second defender.

The team then performs the practice in a 3v3 to link closely to a game situation. The defenders apply minimum pressure then develop this to full game pressure.

To improve the accuracy of the long pass;

We practised in pairs throwing down the court increasing the distance gradually.

To improve the offensive rebound:

21

Page 24: Intro - WordPress.com€¦  · Web viewRoles and Responsibilities in Basketball. When playing as part of a group or team, it is essential to understand what your individual responsibilities

We practised driving to the basket for a layup with a team member coming in from the other side to pick up the rebound and try again to score.

Fast Break - Programme of Work 2

Rebounding - 2 defenders box out attacker to win the rebound and make an outlet pass.

Outlet Pass - Rebound practice includes feed moving out wide quickly for outlet pass

Communication - Same practice but feed shouts ‘ball’

Getting Ahead of the Ball - Defender rebounds the ball, makes an outlet pass, follows the ball and sprints down the outside channel to get ahead of the ball for a pass and drives in to lay-up.

Decision Making - Practised the 3 options one at a time, then teacher added in numbers, then added in defenders.

React Quicker to the Break - Game situation (3v3). Teacher blew the whistle in middle of game and team with ball had to quickly fast break.

Our programme of work became gradually more game like as it progressed. The programme was effective because we carried out the practises in the following way:

started slowly (walk through drill) before building up to game speed

started with few players before building up to a full team

started with no defenders before building up to a full team of defenders

start with passive defenders before building up to fully active defenders

How to Monitor/Evaluate Improvements in the Fast Break

Monitoring is checking the success during my programme of work. I can use the following methods:

1. Repeat methods of gathering information / make comparisons2. Knowledge of Results3. Programme of Work Diary / Self Reflection4. Feedback

Why it is Important to Monitor/Evaluate

to allow comparisons to previous information gathered;

to check what progress has been made;

to check if targets have been met;

to see if my programme has been appropriate (principles);

to see if I need to make any changes / adaptations to my programme (progressive overload);

to identify any new strengths / weaknesses;

Reasons for using half court man-to-man defence

Pick up half way line applying early pressure

Forces your opponent wide away from the basket

Pressure opponent – make mistakes, force poor shot, make steal, interception. Turn game round and set up own attack

Possibility of matching up in terms of height, pace & ability.

Sag off weakest player double up against strongest. Deny space to strongest player and frustrate opposition making it easier for my team to regain possession and start up our own attack.

At a point in the game when you need turnovers and hopefully quick points.

If your team is fitter than the opposition.

If your team is faster than the opposition.

If your team are very good aggressive defenders.

If the opposition are poor at dribbling/passing.

If the opposition are good outside shooters.

Roles and Responsibilities within half court man-to-man defence

My role within half court man-to-man defence is :

To decide with my team who I am marking ( height, ability etc)

To get back quickly when my team loses possession in attack

Stay between my opponent and the basket

Put pressure on my opponent when dribbling, passing and shooting

Try to force my opponent onto their weak side

If my opponent is not in a threatening position cover for any teammate who has been beaten by their man

Double up on a strong opponent while “sagging” off a weaker player.

Box out my opponent to win a defensive rebound.

Strengths/Weaknesses of a ½ court man-to-man defence

The aim of this defence is to apply pressure as the opposition cross the half way line.

Strengths

It is possible to “match up” players of similar height, ability, position, in the game.

It is easy to organise as everyone knows who they are marking.

It is easy to implement as everyone is back before they need to find their man.

It allows players to delay the attack until everyone is marked.

It allows the defence to “sag off” weaker players and help/pressurise/double mark strong players.

Weaknesses

It allows the opposition time and space to set up the attacking moves e.g. screens, pass and cut, set moves.

If a player is beaten, easy drives to the basket may result.

If there is a mismatch in height between the two teams, the taller opposition can exploit the area close to the basket against the smaller opposition.

Can be very tiring if a team lacks fitness.

Description of a zone defence

Zone Defence

The aim of a zone defence is to mark a specific area.

The team must work as a unit.

The zone moves as a whole to combat the passing, shooting and penetration from the opposition.

Good for securing rebounds as players are already in position round the key. (This could launch a fast break)

In this zone, defender D man marks the best player denying him the ball. Other team members protect the basket as in a normal zone.

Roles and Responsibilities within Defence

Roles and Relationships - Half court man-to-man

My role in the man-to-man defence is to:

initially decide who I am marking.

Match up with opponents of similar ability, speed, and height.

If my team looses possession in attack my role is to get back as quickly as possible.

delay the attack to allow my teammates to find their man.

stay between my man and the basket

put pressure on my opponents’ shots

force my opponent on to their weaker side or wide away from the basket.

If the player I am marking is away from the basket and not in a threatening position I must move towards the basket to try to cover for teammates who may be beaten by their man.

I should also look for opportunities to trap the opposition. This may lead to me leaving my man and ‘double teaming’ an opponent.

When the opposition shoots my role is to box out my man and hopefully either win the rebound myself or allow others in my team to do so.

31

Page 34: Intro - WordPress.com€¦  · Web viewRoles and Responsibilities in Basketball. When playing as part of a group or team, it is essential to understand what your individual responsibilities

Roles and Relationships - Zone Defence

1. My role is one of the 2 front players in a 2.1.2 defence.

On losing possession, get back to my position, delaying the attack possible. In the zone work with the other front player to stop the opposition feed from penetrating the zone.Pressurise opposition to make passes into the zone difficult and hopefully force a long outside shot.Work as a unit at all times.

2. My role in a 2.1.2 zone defence is one of the 2 baseline players.

On losing possession get back quickly to my position in the zone, delaying the attack if possible. Stay in tight to the key so that the opposition are forced wide of the basket. Do not move out of position when ball/players enter my zone. The team must work as a unit and move in unison, communicating all the time, forcing the opposition wide, giving less scoring opportunities.

3. My role in a 2.1.2 zone defence is normally the centre.

On losing possession I get back quickly to the centre of the key, delaying the attack if possible. Pressurise any player in the opposition who tries to take up a central position in our key.I must ensure the zone works as a unit.

32

Page 35: Intro - WordPress.com€¦  · Web viewRoles and Responsibilities in Basketball. When playing as part of a group or team, it is essential to understand what your individual responsibilities

When the opposition shoot I work with my two baseline players, boxing out the opposition and try to win the rebound. My position often allows me to see the attack developing so I can communicate with my teammates to keep a solid defence.

Group and Team Principles within man-to-man Defence

Width

Get back quickly

Position your self between the ball and the basket

Quick feet / arms wide/ “make yourself big”

Force opponents away from the basket

Identify strengths and weaknesses of your opponent and then pressurize their weakness (eg left hand dribble)

Depth

Allows a second layer of defence if the first is beaten

Improves communication as as you can see the rest of your team

When an opponent is not a threat then “sag off “ and double mark a strong player.

Delay

When the opposition gets the ball the closest player should apply pressure to allow the rest of their teammates time to pick up their man at the halfway line.

If you delay the attack by picking up the “wrong man”, then your teammate must cover your man until you get the chance to switch.

Weaknesses within our half court man-to-man defence

UNABLE TO STAY WITH OPPONENTOur team cannot keep up with their opponent therefore they get easy unopposed shots at the basket. This is because we find man-to-man very tiring.

UNAABLE TO STAY BETWEEN OPPONENT AND BASKETWhen playing man-to-man we struggle to position ourselves between our opponent and our basket. This means we tend to pick up more fouls. Then we can end up losing our best players thus putting our team under even more pressure.

HEIGHT / ABILITY DISADVANTAGEWhen playing man-to-man we struggle to match teams in terms of height, as we are not a particularly tall team. This means that we lose many defensive rebounds.

LACK OF COVER / MOBILITYCommunication is a problem when each individual in our team is focused on his/her own man. This limits the teams performance as reaction to a player in trouble can be slow, allowing advantage to the opposition.

Reasons for changing to a zone defence

Opponents are poor at outside shots and in a zone we can force them into this.

Opponents have a weaker player on the left side and we can use the zone to force the ball this way with hope of trapping this player/forcing a poor shot.

My team was tiring playing man-to-man and therefore a zone was chosen because it is less tiring for the 3 back players and I could sub my front players.

We were trying to play a fast break in attack and a zone is better for this strategy since players tend to be in a better position to start the break.

The attack the opponents were using was easier to stop using a zone.

It is easy to change a zone to match the opponents’ attack, e.g. a box and 1 where we can keep our zone but apply pressure on their strong player.

How to Monitor/Evaluate Improvements in Defence

Monitoring is checking the success during my programme of work. I can use the following methods:

1. Repeat methods of gathering information. 2. Make comparisons between analysis sheets - see if

changing from man-to-man to a zone has made an improvement to our game.

3. Knowledge of Results

Why it is Important to Monitor/Evaluate

to check what progress has been made;

to check if targets have been met;

to see if I need to make any further changes / adaptations to my programme eg from a 2-1-2 to a box and 1

to identify any new strengths / weaknesses;

to motivate me to keep working or to work harder.
