can be regarded as the oldest Internet application for global distribution of information. It originated in 1979 at the
University of North Carolina. It is simply a set of machines
(Usenet News Server s) which cooperate to exchange (using
NNTP ) articles tagged with one or more labels, which arecalled "newsgroups". Newsgroups are organized
hierarchically according to the subjects of the articles
belonging to them. Newsgroups or individual articles in
newsgroups can be addressed using a special URL scheme.
