I think its easier if we talk about the

    second question first...

    the reason we need faculty

development is because we have aproblem.

    4/30

We are expected to be all these things

and this can be too much... it can beoverwhelming!

    5/30

In the past, people made the

assumption that... when you finishedyour medical training that you wereable to teach...

  • 7/31/2019 Intro to FacDev

    6/30

but we know this isnt true. There are

very smart and skilled physicians whocannot teach.

    So when this assumption was

challenged in the 70s, they starteddoing studies and found those wholearned how to teach madesignificantly *better teachers as ratedby their students and peers... and had*more successful students seen inbetter scores and performance. Whowants to be a better teacher - efective& respected? Who wants students tolike them and learn well from them?

Behavioral - learning was defined as

changing behavior - objectives, drills, practice, feedbackCognitive - developing practicalknowledge and reasoning skills,problem-based learningSocial - changing values, learningculture, developing the right learningenvironment But I think learning this is... headache. So I think the key to facultydevelopment is...

I want to introduce you to the red

string principle. There were a lot ofthings for me to learn when I came toCambodia. Some things were verydiferent and it was easy for me to seethis and ask about it. But sometimes many times I just missed thingsbecause they either seemed small orinsignificant, or my eyes just werentlooking for it. And this is true forthose little red strings

Then one day, a Khmer friend pointed

out these red strings. He explainedthey were for good luck and protectionand Khmer use them to protecteverything. Huh I dont think I eversaw those before. I asked if it wascommon yes, VERY common. But Iasked if its so common, how come Ihavent seen it before?

And then as I left, I began to see a red

string, and another and another andthey were EVERYWHERE! On peopleswrists, on the van side mirror I tookinto town, doorknobs and mostmotorcycles!

These are examples of poor teaching

because the situation was notunderstood. Good teachingrecognizes the situation - andteaching is leadershipThe volunteer would have greatlyhelped the junior doctor, yes?
