Page 5: Intro to Drupal for Geek Girls

Drupal in #s •  currently powering 1% of the web (2020 Goal: 20%)

•  Drupal (& Joomla) developers are earning ca 2x more than WP developers (source: Mashable)

•  Dries’ state of Drupal 2010 speech:

•  module-based system makes development easier, but need for standardization of modules dire

•  OSS CMS’s are changing the way people develop websites

•  community is ≈10% female (greatest of any major OSS CMS) (source: Dries’ Keynote)

Page 6: Intro to Drupal for Geek Girls

Why Drupal? •  Come for the code, stay for the community

•  Salaries ca 2x higher than WP developers; demand for jobs in DK exploding (source: Mashable)

•  extreme growth in market- Joomla development is slowing down as WordPress’ is picking up- WordPress turning into a real CMS, but not competitive on large scale

•  Real competition is not between OSS CMS’, but between proprietary software vendors and static HTML sites

THE FUTURE: •  “Going into 2011, there are two

things impacting Acquia's [and Drupal’s] future that still concern me:

✴  the scarcity of great Drupal talent and

✴  Drupal's growth.

•  The demand for Drupal experts continues to be much larger than the supply -- it limits the adoption of Drupal by our customers, the growth of our partners, as well as our own ability to hire Drupal talent.”

•  -Dries, buytaert.net

Predictions for 2011 •  Drupal 7 delivers noticeably better usability,

design, accessibility, scalability and marketing

•  Drupal as CMS of choice for iPad development

•  priority for Drupal on low- end sites (small scale) with improved media handling and WYSIWYG editing

•  Improved “Drupal as a Product” distributions

Page 9: Intro to Drupal for Geek Girls

Drupal: growing pains •  Community is large and growing quickly

•  Rock Stars are over-represented- need more Roadies:

•  Business-savvy (Dries: “we need a business model”)

•  extreme need for developers- proprietary support danger

•  interest in the non-sexy roles: documentation, translation, module organization/maintenance

Page 10: Intro to Drupal for Geek Girls

Drupal: challenges

•  needs technical distribution packages

•  concentration of developers in the non-english speaking world

•  PHP does not have good unicode support ATM- needs evolution

• module queue issues- growing, growing
