    POETRY IS A LOT OF THINGS TO A LOT OF PEOPLE.

    Wordsworth defined poetry as "the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings;"

    Emily Dickinson said, "If I read a book and it makes my body so cold no fire

    ever can warm me, I know that is poetry;"Dylan Thomas defined poetry this way: "Poetry is what makes me laugh or cryor yawn, what makes my toenails twinkle, what makes me want to do this orthat or nothing."

    FIRE AND ICE(Robert Frost)

    Some say the world will end in fire,

    Some say in ice.From what I've tasted of desireI hold with those who favor fire.But if it had to perish twice,I think I know enough of hate

    To say that for destruction iceIs also greatAnd would suffice.

    SILENT and amazed, even when a little boy,I remember I heard the preacher every Sunday put God in hisstatements,As contending against some being or influence.

    A poem sometimes has stanzasHope is the Thing With FeathersEmily Dickinson

    Hope is the thing with feathersThat perches in the soul,

    And sings the tune without the words,And never stops at all,And sweetest in the gale is heard;

    And sore must be the stormThat could abash the little birdThat kept so many warm

    Is this poetry? My love is strengthened, though more weak in seeming;I love not less, though less the show appear;

    That love is merchandized, whose rich esteeming,The owner's tongue doth publish every where.(William Shakespeare)

    Or this?His palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy

    There's vomit on his sweater already, mom's

    spaghetti

    He's nervous, but on the surface he looks calm and

    ready to drop bombs,

    but he keeps on forgettin what he wrote down,the whole crowd goes so loud

    He opens his mouth, but the words won't come out
