The University of Nevada soccer team played its inaugural season in 2000 at Mendive Middle School in Sparks, Nev., before the team moved to Mackay Stadium, which has served as the home field for the Wolf Pack since the 2001 season.

Mackay Stadium, which is located on the North side of campus, hosted the 2006 Western Athletic Conference Soccer Tournament, which the Pack won to advance to its first NCAA Tournament.

Nevada has enjoyed a good amount of success at home during its 14 seasons at Mackay Stadium. Since its first campaign at Mackay in 2001, the Wolf Pack has won just over 62 percent of its home contests. During its best run in the program’s short history, the 2005 and 2006 seasons, Nevada recorded a combined 15-2-3 record at Mackay. In the summer of 2000, the innovative FieldTurf synthetic grass was installed in the stadium. A year later, the Benefactor Tribute was added near the south entrance to the stadium. It serves as the focal point of the Endowment Plaza, built in the early 1990’s, which forms a semicircle opposite the bronze wolves just inside Mackay’s main entrance and honors all those who have helped with capital projects, endowed athletics scholarships and/or been members of the Millennium Team, helping Nevada join the WAC in 2000.

Added for the 2002 season were large sponsor billboards on the back side of the south end zone bleachers. In 2003 one of the most significant changes occurred -- lights were added. Prior to the 2004 season, the West Stadium Parking Complex, a 1,900-stall parking garage, opened.New in 2005 were organized tailgate tent areas in the northwest part of the stadium and improved game day festivities, while the latest enhancements include a large video replay screen and scoreboard that improved the game-day experience in 2006.

The original turf installation was guaranteed through 2008 and Nevada installed new FieldTurf prior to the 2010 season, with alternating shades of green every five years and the “sportwolf” official logo at the 50-yard line. In 2012, the “Battle Born” tradition made its mark on the turf at Mackay Stadium, representing a longstanding (and unofficial) state motto.

More upgrades and enhancements are in the planning phases as Nevada works to maintain the homefield advantage of Mackay Stadium and provide its fans with a quality environment to enjoy and experience Wolf Pack athletics.

Season Preview

If one thing is certain for the 2015 Nevada soccer season, it’s the amount of depth that the revamped Wolf Pack roster will contain. A roster which will feature a staggering 29 student-athletes.

The new-look Pack will once again be led by six-year head coach Dr. Melissa Price. Aiding Price on the sidelines this season will be Casey Tate, who is back for his sixth season, and first-year assistant Erin Otagaki. Otagaki joins the coaching staff after a successful assistant coaching stint at Purdue.

Price adds 10 student-athletes to the mix this year and will return seven who suffered season-ending injuries last year. After losing five starters from the 2014 squad, training camp figures to be a dog fight to get into the starting lineup.

“We couldn’t be more excited for the 2015 season. I’m proud of all the work our student-athletes have done to prepare for the season and their drive and energy is contagious,” said Price. “We have competition and depth in every position, making this roster one of the best in tenure as the head coach. We have versatility, athleticism, and talent - plus this team has heart! We have a competitive schedule and are ready to confidently take on the 2015 season with the hunger and determination to be successful. It’s going to be a fun ride!”

ScHeduLeNevada will play an 11-game home schedule this season, with the home opener scheduled for Friday, Aug. 21 against Gonzaga. The match, which kicks off at 5 p.m., will be played on the grass surface at Moana Field.

The Wolf Pack opens play at its normal home venue of Mackay Stadium the following Friday, Aug. 28 versus Montana. From Friday, Sept. 13 through Sunday, Sept. 27, the Pack enjoys a five-match homestand. During that block, Nevada opens Mountain West play against Colorado College and Air Force the final weekend of September.

As October gets underway the Wolf Pack hits the road to begin the month but returns to Reno on Friday, Oct. 9 for a four-game stretch at home. The back-to-back weekend stint will be the final set of home contests for the Pack, which concludes the 2015 home slate on Sunday, Oct. 18 against Wyoming. Nevada hits the road for its final three regular season games, ending at UNLV for a Governor’s Series matchup on Friday, Oct. 30.

ForwardThe Pack returns its top scoring duo up front with sophomore Angel Meriwether and senior Daisha Jones-Oglesby back for another year. Meriwether posted a breakout rookie campaign, leading the team in goals, assists, and points. She finished the year tied for third in the conference in game-winning goals. Embarking on her final collegiate season, Jones-Oglesby posted the best offensive numbers of her career as a junior and will look to build on it

in 2015. Aiding Meriwether and Jones-Oglesby on the front line, Price has four returners to turn to (Stephanie Martini, Kara Kopolow, Morgan Beye, Erin Saxton) and two freshmen (Rylee Peterson, Lauren Woodyard).

MidFieLdAnchoring the midfield this season will be senior Lindsey Salcido, who tallied her first collegiate goal last season. Salcido has been a mainstay in the Nevada midfield since her freshman year as she has seen the field in 60 games with 59 starts.

Running the ship in the middle part of the pitch alongside Salcido, the Pack has a few returning players from season-ending injuries in redshirt junior Alyissa deRonde, junior Amelia Jacobs and sophomore Nikki Mitsuyasu. DeRonde has the most experience behind Salcido, with two full seasons under her belt before being sidelined last year. Mixing in with the veterans in the midfield will be freshmen Mackenzie Robinson and Hannah Miller.

deFeNSeJuniors Brianna Bosson and Katherine Davison, along with sophomore Mei-Li Madamba have the most experience on the back line heading into this season. To date, Davison has started all but one match during her career and Bosson has started in all but five.

With 11 listed as defenders on the roster, the back line should be the deepest. Along with Bosson, Davison, and Madamba, the coaching staff welcomes back four additional returners in junior Gaby Caporicci, sophomores Katie Prosser and Aubrie Ciesynski and redshirt freshman Bryanna Wiehe. A bulk of this year’s newcomers (Kendra Reif, Analyse Talavera, Hannah Wuensche, Rachael King) enter the season as defenders, giving the Pack some added options to turn to.

GoaLkeeperNevada will be loaded with goalkeeper help this season, carrying four. Who comes out of training camp as the frontrunner to win the starting job in net however, remains to be seen. Kelsey Quintos, who won the starting job last season after posting five shutouts the previous year, is back in the mix after an ACL tear cut her 2014 campaign short.

Following Quintos’ injury, Devyn Bryar stepped in as the team’s starting goalkeeper and led the Mountain West in saves. Also competing for playing time are two incoming freshmen, Lauryn Horstdaniel and Arielle Perez.

Season tickets for the 2015 soccer season are available and are just $60 for adults, $45 for seniors (65 and older) and $55 for youth (8th grade or younger). The youth package includes a Pup Club membership, which also provides season tickets for football, volleyball, baseball and softball. Dr. Melissa (Missy) Price will begin her sixth year as head coach and eighth overall at Nevada in 2015. In May of 2010 she graduated with a Ph.D. in sport psychology from the University of Virginia.

Price obtained her NSCAA Premier Diploma, the highest coaching certification given by the coaches association, in January of 2012.

Last fall, the Wolf Pack suffered an injury-plagued season but led the Mountain West in saves. Senior Chrisalyn Fonte earned the second All-MW second team selection of her career under Price’s guidance. Eleven of Price’s student-athletes in 2014 earned Academic All-MW honors as well.

Playing in its first season in the Mountain West in 2012, Price’s squad improved with a 7-10-3 record. She led the team into the Mountain West Tournament, defeating Boise State 1-0 in the quarterfinal round.

In her first season at the helm, Price incorporated four true freshmen into a team with plenty of senior leadership. Seven student-athletes played their final season for the Pack, closing out careers that saw five of them named to at least one all-WAC team and totaled 22 all-WAC Academic and Athletic honors.

As a team in 2010, Nevada did most of its damage in the second half, scoring 16 of their 25 regular time goals in the second frame. In total, the Pack scored 27 times in 2010 on 247 shots for 1.42 goals per game. The additional two tallies each came in the second overtime period of their respective matches.

Before taking the head coaching job, Price spent the previous two seasons as an assistant coach at Nevada primarily working with the goalkeepers. In 2009, Price helped lead the Pack to the most conference wins in program history (5) as the team made an appearance in the finals of the WAC Tournament for only the second time in program history. During her first year as an assistant coach with Nevada in 2008, Price helped lead the team to its fourth consecutive WAC Tournament appearance. She team’s goalkeepers that season, Marie Cove and Sarah Hunt, combined for four shutouts during the season.

Prior to joining the staff at Nevada, Price served as an assistant women’s soccer coach at the University of Virginia, the University of Illinois and most recently at the University of Miami. She has assisted in leading her teams to a total of four NCAA Tournament appearances.

Price served as an assistant coach at the University of Miami from 2002-2004. While working with the Hurricanes, she served as the recruiting coordinator. She was also involved in the planning and conducting of team training sessions, goalkeeper coaching, requesting scouting reports and directing summer soccer camps.

Prior to the University of Miami, Price worked as an assistant

women’s soccer coach at the University of Illinois from 1999-2002 where her responsibilities included recruiting, coordinating team travel, planning and coaching training sessions for field players and goalkeepers as well as directing summer soccer camps. The Illini made two NCAA Tournament appearances in 2000 and 2001 and also reached the championship round of the Big 10 Tournament in 2001.

She spent two seasons, 1997-1999, as an assistant coach at the University of Virginia where she assisted with training sessions and coaching goalkeepers. She also directed the summer soccer camps. The team qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 1997 and 1998.

Price has conducted numerous coaching presentations for several soccer teams, graduate students and conferences. She has also been a part of several academic presentations and has had her work published in The Sports Psychologist and The Encyclopedia of Sports Medicine.

In addition to her collegiate coaching experience, Price has also spent time coaching with the U.S. Youth Soccer Association ODP Program (East Region), the Soccer Organization of Charlottesville-Albermarle, the East Tennessee Soccer Federation and the Illinois Youth Soccer Association. She has also spent 14 years coaching several summer soccer camps including the Virginia Soccer Centers for Excellence, the University of Maryland Soccer Camps, the April Heinrichs Soccer School and the Soccer Academy.

Price played collegiately for the University of Maryland from 1993-1997. As a goalkeeper, she led her team to two NCAA quarterfinal appearances and was named to the Mid-Atlantic All-Region Team, the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll and the Student-Advisory Council.

She is a member of several professional organizations including the United States Soccer Coaches Association, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, the Association for the Advanced Placement of Applied Sport Psychology and the North American Society for the Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity.

She has also taken part in the Women in Coaching Summit held in Chula Vista, Calif., in 2003. Former U.S. national team coach April Heinrichs organized the invitation only summit to foster a collective environment for the education and mentoring of female coaches. Topics included skill development, fitness, media and social pressure.

Price, who holds a United States Soccer Association “A” coaching license, graduated from the University of Maryland in 1997 with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology. She earned her master’s degree in sport and exercise psychology from the University of Virginia in 1999 and earned her Ph.D. in sports and exercise science from the University of Virginia in 2010.
