    Course description from catalog: A course designed to attack basic problems in formal writing and to introduce formal paragraphingand essay writing. A prerequisite for ENG 110 based on departmental evaluation of student‟swriting.

    Course Goal:This course is preparation for the core composition course: ENG 110.The course is a study offormal paragraphing and essay writing, with a review of grammatical problems and sentencestructure options to prepare students for the most effective expression. The objective of the courseis to bring students to satisfactory preparation for composition of the research paper.

    Objectives:1. Ability to compose a formal, unified, coherent paragraph 2. Ability to compose a formal, unified, coherent essay 3. Ability to identify parts of speech, parts of a sentence, types of sentences4. Ability to correct grammatical errors in sentences 5. Ability to use correct punctuation in sentences.

    Criteria for Grading and Percentages for Each Requirement:Paragraph Assignments: 20%Précis Assignments: 20%Essay Assignments: 30%Grammar Quizzes: 10%Grammar Exam: 10%Class Participation & Attendance: 10%

    Grading formulaA =100-94%, A- = 93-90%, B+= 89-84%, B = 83-80%, B-= 79-77%, C+ – 76-74%, C =73-70%, C-= 69-66%, D+= 65-61%, D = 60%, F = 59-0%

    Policy for make-up exams and missed or late assignmentsAssignments are due on the day class meets. There will be no make-up sessions or assignments foreither assignments or presentations, unless you have official documentation such as a note from adoctor or hospital.

    All assignments will be posted on each individual website. Electronic submissions such as email

    Molloy e-mailAll official announcements related to the course will be sent through Molloy e-mail. Students areexpected to check their @molloy.edu e-mail regularly.

    The Communicating Across the Curriculum (CAC) requirement for writing, speaking, listening,and critical thinking is an integral part of all assignments. All aspects of this course will fulfill theCAC requirements.

    Academic IntegrityThe policy on academic integrity is found in the Student Handbook of Molloy College andUndergraduate Course Catalog. Please review the policy and abide by it.

    Attendance PolicyBecause this is course is performance course, attendance is mandatory. Absences of more thanthree class sessions will result in lowering of the grade by one full letter.Three late arrivals will be counted as one absence.

    Assignments:

    1. Paragraph Assignments Throughout the course you will be required to write TEN formal, unified, and coherent paragraphson topics I provide. Think of these assignments as building blocks toward writing a longer essay.These assignments should indicate that you can write clear sentences, grammatically correctsentences, and topic-focused sentences.

    2. Précis AssignmentsThroughout the course you will be required to complete FIVE précis assignments. A précis is asummary or abstract of a text. A précis should be brief and focused. Each assignment shouldcontain five primary components and ONLY five components. 1) In a single coherent sentencegive the name of the author, title of the work, and the date of the publication. 2) In a single coherentsentence sta te the author‟s thesis, i.e., “the author argues that cats are superior to dogs.” 3) In asingle coherent sentence summarize how the author develops and supports the thesis statement. 4)In a single coherent sentence give a statement of the author‟s purpos e. 5) In a single coherentsentence describe the relationship the author establishes with the audience.

    3. EssaysYou are required to write two formal five-paragraph essays in this course. Essays should feature athesis statement and introductory paragraph; three supporting paragraphs that provide examplesthat relate back to your thesis; and a concluding paragraph that synthesizes your examples andrestates your thesis.

    4. Grammar QuizzesYou are required to take 10 grammar quizzes in this course. Quizzes will cover a particular week‟s

    theme and focus. See the „Weekly Assignments‟ section below for a list of dates and themes.

    5. Grammar ExamThe grammar exam will be the culmination of your grammar quizzes and writing lessonsthroughout the course. The exam is cumulative.

    6. Attendance & ParticipationYou are required to attend each class and participate to the best of your ability. This requires thatyou complete the assigned readings for each course, complete each assignment on time, andregularly participate in course discussion.
