1 Introduction

Note

Please carefully read Reference [1] before commencing the integration andimplement whenever applicable.

This document details the integration of the Nokia Talk-family GSM 900/1800/1900 Base Transceiver Station (BTS) to the Base Station System (BSS).

The integration procedure covers control calls in every timeslot of eachTransceiver unit (TRX).

2 General

2.1 Requirements

Before integration of the BTS to the BSS, the BTS must be commissioned, andthe correct parameters must be set in the Base Station Controller (BSC), NetworkManagement System (NMS), and the Mobile Switching Center (MSC).

Integration is performed in the field using the Field Test functions of the testmobile.

2.2 Fault reporting

Correct all damages, failures, and faults upon integration, if possible. Pleasereport all outstanding issues to the Nokia Site Manager using the appropriateFailure Report Form or Site Deficiency Reports provided by your nearestCustomer/Engineering Services Center (CSC/ESC).

2.3 Site Folders

Nokia recommends maintaining a site folder for every BTS site to store thefollowing documentation:

. Installation, commissioning, and integration logs

. Inventory lists

. Site-specific installation information

The exact contents of the site folder are determined by the customer project, thecustomer, or both. Site folders are archived by the customer.

3 Integration overview

3.1 Integration principles

Integration is the last phase in the sequence of events that prepares the BTS forcommercial use. The functioning of the BSS is ensured by the integrationprocess.

Before integrating the BTS, check that all previous phases from thecorresponding checklists have been completed.

The following figure shows the sequence of activities performed duringintegration.

4 Preparing for integration

1. Check that the antenna feeder cables are properly connected, grounded, and accurately labeled.

2. Disable the A-bis interface using MMI, see Reference [2].

3. Check the BCF flash memory for the operational version of HW databaseand ensure that the current SW version is correct.

4. Check the TRU settings and ensure that the active branching table iscorrect.

5 Restarting the BTS from the BSC

1. Enable the A-bis interface using the MMI, see Reference [2].

2. Request NMS personnel to attach and activate the SW packet to the BTS.

3. Check that the plug-in unit LED status shows no alarms and that thecorrect ARFN is displayed in each TRX.

4. Check the alarm status using the MMI.

5. Ensure the correct SW version and HW database are stored in flashmemory. Check the alarm status locally and with the NMS.

6 Integration

1. Call the NMS.

2. Enable the A-bis interface using the MMI, see Reference [2].

3. Request NMS personnel to attach and activate the SW packet to the BTS.

4. Once BTS has downloaded, check status using the MMI.

5. Ensure the correct SW version and HW database is stored in the flashmemory.

6. Make a test call to the NMS, recording the ARFN and TS (Timeslot) used.

7. Check alarm status with NMS.

8. Clear the TRUx error counters using the Service Terminal (Emulator).

7 Making test calls

Test calls are required to ensure that all Traffic Channels function correctly andthat neighboring cell information and handover parameters have been created atthe MSC.

During each call, do the following:

. ensure two-way speech by checking the speech quality

. check that the receive quality (Q1) is 0

. record the timeslot

. record the ARFN

Ensure that neighboring cell information appears on the test mobile. Establish acall and check that each cell will handover to its immediate neighbors and backagain.

Note

Make this call at a Timing Advance (TA) of at least 1, ensuring that the airinterface is via the BTS antenna system.

Make test calls in every timeslot in each sector, recording the results on the testcall checklist (see Appendix 9).

If it is difficult to lock into certain channels or timeslots, the other channels ortimeslots can be blocked from the BSC/NMS (provided that the blocking doesnot cause problems to other test groups and users).

Note

Calls cannot be established in timeslots reserved for signaling. You may have tolock the test mobile to the ARFN of the sector under test to speed up the process.

8 Completing integration

1. Ensure you leave the BTS in a presentable condition for customers (i.e., allcables tied, all units secured, blanking panels in place).

2. Ensure the site is clean and that all waste materials have been removedfrom the site.

3. Ensure the site folder is completed and returned to the BTS Site Manager.

4. Call the NMS and ensure there are no active alarms on the BTS.
