Journal of Perinatal Medicine, Vol. 16 (1988) Supplement 1, 160 pp., DM 98.00 This is a report of the First International Symposium held in Atlantic City U.S.A., June 1987. As said in the foreword by Erich Wing, the founder of biochemical monitoring of the fetus, the symposium was necessary because ‘many obstetricians began to rely entirely on cardiotocography’. The reader can refresh and update his or her knowledge of some fundamentals of fetal biochemistry. There are also papers on continuous monitoring of fetal scalp tissue pH and transcutaneous carbon dioxide monitoring. Much emphasis is also given to lactate. The reader does not (yet) find any results of randomized trials or long-term follow-ups of newborns. However, this referee looks forward to the publication of the second symposium. T.K.A.B. This is a report of the First International Symposium held in Atlantic City U.S.A., June 1987.
