TheEsplanadeArtsandHeritageCentreiswherethestoriesofourgreatcollectiveculturearetold
throughmusicanddance,paintingandsculpture,playsandconcerts,exhibitionsandinstallations,
artifactsandart,educationprogramsandprivateevents.Featuringa700-seatmainstagebalcony
theatrewhichboastssuperiortechnologyandstrikingdesign,theEsplanadeiswhereMedicineHat
celebratesartsandheritage.
AmarvelofcontemporaryCanadianarchitectureontraditionalBlackfootterritoryjuststepsfromthe
SouthSaskatchewanRiver,theEsplanadeoccupiesaneminentpositionondowntown’shistoricFirst
StreetSoutheast.Fromitsrooftopterrace,youcanseeSaamis,thedramaticshorelineescarpment
whichisthesettingforthestoryofhowMedicineHatgotitsname.
Inside,visitorsdiscoverthevibrantEsplanadeArtGallery,theprizedEsplanadeMuseum,the
EsplanadeStudioTheatreacrossthelobbyfromtheEsplanadeMainStageTheatre,theexpansive
EsplanadeArchivesandReadingRoom,anarteducationspacecalledtheDiscoveryCentreandthe
catering-friendlyCutbanksRoom.
InthenortheastcorneroftheEsplanadegroundsstandstheoldestremainingbrickhomeinAlberta,
theEwart-DugganHouse.Withitsgingerbreadtrimandquaintheritagegardens,itnowservesasa
charmingvenueforselectculturaleventsandahomeawayfromhomeforartistsinresidence.
TheEsplanadeopenedincelebrationofAlberta’scentennialin2005andeversince,MedicineHathas
welcomedasteadyprocessionofartistsandaudiences,storytellersandstory-loversfromaroundthe
regionandaroundtheglobe.Thecelebrationcontinuestoday.

ABOUTTHEAFATRAVELLINGEXHIBITIONPROGRAM
TheAlbertaFoundationfortheArts(AFA)hassupportedaprovincialtravellingexhibitionprogram
since1981.ThemandateoftheAFATravellingExhibitionProgramistoprovideeveryAlbertanwith
theopportunitytoenjoyvisualartexhibitionsintheircommunity.
ThreeregionalgalleriesandoneartsorganizationcoordinatetheprogramfortheAFA:
NorthwestRegion:TheArtGalleryofGrandePrairie,GrandePrairie
NortheastandNorthCentralRegion:TheArtGalleryofAlberta,Edmonton
SouthwestRegion:TheAlbertaSocietyofArtists,Calgary
SoutheastRegion:TheEsplanadeArtsandHeritageCentre,MedicineHat
Eachyear,morethan300,000AlbertansenjoymanyexhibitionsincommunitiesrangingfromHigh
LevelinthenorthtoMilkRiverinthesouthandvirtuallyeverywhereinbetween.TheAFATravelling
ExhibitionProgramalsoofferseducationalsupportmaterialtohelpeducatorsintegratethevisual
artsintotheschoolcurriculum.
ExhibitionsfortheTREXprogramarecuratedfromavarietyofsources,includingprivateandpublic
collections.AmajorpartoftheprogramassistsinmakingtheAFA’sextensiveartcollectionavailable
toAlbertans.Thisgrowingartcollectionconsistsofover8,000artworksshowcasingthecreative
talentsofmorethan2000artists.AstheonlyprovincialartcollectioninAlberta,theAFAcollection
reflectsthedevelopmentofthevibrantvisualartscommunityintheprovinceandhasbecomean
importantculturallegacyforallAlbertans.

CURATORIALSTATEMENT
Fourteenthousandyearsago,rapidchanneldown-cuttingbyglacialmelt-waterformedthedramatic
couleesandhoodoosoftheCanadianBadlands.Attheheartofthisregionisoneofthemostunique
townsinwesternCanada.Drumheller,Alberta,hasanextensivehistorythatfeedsitsdistinctive
present-daystatus.Theunusuallandformationsprovideanunforgettablefirstimpressionofatown
whosetourismindustryisthebackboneoftheeconomy;theeye-catching,forty-six-metre-tallT.Rex
confirmsthis,andmakesyourealizeyouarenolongerinKansasanymore.Beyondthehypeofthe
hoodoosanddinosaurs,Drumhellerpossessesaquaintdowntownfilledwiththeusualsuspects(post
office,bank,second-handstore,pizzaparlor)aswellasacharmingartgallery.In2004theCanadian
BadlandsArtistAssociationopenedtheBadlandsGallery,mandatedto“fosterandenhancepublic
awareness,understandingandappreciationforthepositiveculturalsignificanceofthevisualarts.”[1]
Thisisachievedthroughastrongmembershipoflocalartists,whoexhibitwithinthespace.
Eightyearsago,TREXSoutheastorganizedOutoftheBadlands,anexhibitionfeaturingtheworksfrom
theBadlandsGallery.In2016TREXinvitedgallerymemberstoexhibitonceagain,thistimewitha
stipulation—createnewworkbasedonaproposedtheme.WhileOutoftheBadlandsfocusedonthe
enchantinglandscapewithintheregion,thenewproposedthemechallengedparticipatingartiststo
visuallyexpressuniqueaspectsoftheregionfroma“personal”perspective.Theresultisaselectionof
paintingsandphotographsthatcommunicateeachartist’sindividualsenseofplace.Conveyedthrough
thetwenty-oneworksistheuniqueexperienceofsmall-townlivingalongtheRedDeerRivervalley.
Farming,supermoons,ghostfinders,stormsandwatertowersarejustsomeofthesubjectsexplored.
ThesevenparticipatingartistsincludeJimCarlson,DianneFaulter,BobHamilton,CarrieMashon,Ellen
Nobel,JaniceRussellandLindseyStead.

CarlsonwasborninStettler,Alberta,in
1940,wherehewasraisedonafarmand
attendedaone-roomschoolhouse.After
leavingschool,hedidacarpentry
apprenticeshipandspentmostofhis
workinglifeinconstruction-related
occupations.
HelivedinvariousplacesinBritishColumbia,
butin1998movedpermanentlyto
Drumheller,wherehebeganpainting
seriously.Hissubjectsrangefromhis
neighbour’sappletreetothecoffeeshops
andplazasinNewOrleans.
ArtistStatement
BecauseIliveintheBadlands,mypaintings
arepredominantlyearthtoneswithasplash
ofcolour.Iamself-taught;asaresult,my
workisoftennaïve.Ilikethis,asitgoeswell
withtheearthtonesandthe“goodolddays”
theme.Iwantmypaintingstoevokeasmile,
andformyviewerstobevisuallyand
internallypleased.Myworkusuallytellsa
storydrawnfromday-to-daylife.Iam
pleasedwithmyartandIgetgreatjoyfrom
mypaintings.Thiskeepsmypassionfor
paintingaliveandwell.

Biography
BorninWainwright,Alberta,in1945andraised
inPincherCreek,DiannemadeDrumhellerher
homein1995.WhileresidinginCalgaryuntil
1995,DianneattendedtheUniversityofCalgary
andtheAlbertaCollegeofArtandDesign.Many
greatartistshaveinfluencedherworkoverthe
years,includingA.Y.Jackson,FredaBundyand
JeanBennett.Dianne’simaginationhasbeen
capturedbytheprairies,withgoldenfieldsand
grasslandsstretchingasfarastheeyecansee,
rollinghillsandcoulees,andwindingriversand
creeks,alongwithweatheredbuildingsand
vanishinggrainelevators.Theirstoriesarewell
portrayedinhermanylandscapes,withthe
uniqueformationsoftheDrumhellervalley
ticklingtheimagination.
ArtistStatement
Thisiswherelive.ThisiswhoIam.I’mcaptured
bythespiritofnature,itsbeautyandthe
extensivepaletteofcolourstoworkwith.In
thesechosenpiecesIhaveendeavoredto
presentasmallwindowintothebeautiful
surroundingareaIcallhome.Ilovespring:new
beginnings,freshwithasenseofanticipation
andrenewal.Thensummer:longerdays,soft,
warmbreezes,flowersinfullbloomandgrass
thatneedscutting!Closebehind,thefallseason
follows:brilliantredsandgolds,andclearblue
skieswithducksandgeeseflyingsouth.Finally,
theshortdays ofwintercreepuponus:
moonlightoncoldcrispsnow.

Biography
Hamiltonstartedhiscareerincarpentryat16
yearsold,andbecameaRedSealcarpenter.In
themid-1970's,heapprenticedasa
cabinetmakerandbecameanaward-winning
journeymancustomcabinetmaker.He
eventuallyestablishedacustomwoodworking
shopinDrumheller.Hegainedareputationas
anartisticwoodworkerandcompletedmany
customresidentialandcommercialprojects.
Hestartedpaintingabout15yearsago
(casually)usingacrylicandoilpastels.Hehas
beenpaintinginoilspredominantlyforabout10
years.Hamiltonisself-taught(studyingartat
anyopportunity)andhasbeeninvolvedwith
severalcoursesandworkshops.He’sbeen
spendingtimeinMexicofor7yearsnow,and
studiesunderJavierRamos(awell-known
portraitartist)whenhe’sthere.

WhenIpaint,mygoalistocapturetheessence
ofthesubject.Iprefertospendtimewith
whomeverI’mpaintingandgetafeelforwho
theyare.Ilookfornuancesandsubtle
expressionsthatwillgivemecluesastotheir
personality.IfIcanportraythisoncanvasand
doitinapainterlyfashion,IfeelIhavea
successfulpainting.

Biography
MashonwasborninRockyMountainHouse,in
theshadowoftheRockies.Herfatherwas“the”
professionalphotographerintown.
Unfortunately,hepassedawaywhenshewas
four.Mashonmarriedarancher/farmerinthe
Hanna/Drumhellerarea.Shedidn’tunderstand
howmuchphotographywouldbecomeapartof
herlifeuntilhavingherfirstchild,in1978.When
herdaughterwasayearold,Mashonpurchased
herfirst35mmcamera,aPentaxK1000,fully
manual,andlearnedalotusingthatcamera.It
helpedherphotographybecomewhatitistoday.
“Todaywithdigital,it’ssomucheasier,”shesays.
“Andsomuchmorefun.Mostoftherulesstill
apply,butyoucanhavemany‘do-overs’—notso
muchwithfilm,asit’smuchtooexpensive.”
ArtistStatement
Mashon’sphotographyisareflectionofherlife
inthebadlands.Withhercameraslungoverher
shoulder,shefindsbeautyinthesmallestof
things.Oldsettlersreminiscebacktotheday
afterviewingsomeofherprairielandscapes.An
oldwagonwheelorhomesteadreflectthepast,
whilesomeofherimagesshowmoderndaylife;
harvesttime,thecolorofawheatfield,ranching,
childrenlearningandlivinginthebadlands.On
otheroccasionsit’sthebeautyofthebadlands;
sunsets,sunrises,prairiestorms,rock
formations,amazingwildlifethataboundsthere.

Ellen,bornintheNetherlands,crossedtheglobe
inherinfancytosettleinCanada’sprairies.
Duringearlychildhood,sheaccidentallymadea
markonawallandwasdelightedwiththe
discoverythattheselargespacesprovided
convenientandampleopportunityforcolour
exploration—thoughnotnecessarilywith
parentalconsent!Anartistwasborn.
Ellenhaspursuedarteversince.Moving
westward,shecametoAlberta.Shestudiedat
ACADandearnedherBFAattheUniversityof
Calgary.Shehasfilledtheyearswithallmanner
ofartactivityandstudy,andnowhappilylives
withherhusbandinDrumheller,stillpursuingher
art.
ArtistStatement
Icangetlostinthedetails.Tospendhourswitha
tinybrush,renderingimagesto“justso,”isanact
ofquietcontemplation.Slowlytheimagecomes
together,andsecretlyIsmile—IfeellikeI’ve
uncoveredamystery.
Amovefromametropolisof1.25millionpeople
tothiscommunityoflessthan10,000can’thelp
butcausereflectionandintrospection.Mylistof
commitmentsissmaller.Mysurroundingsare
smaller.Mylifeissmaller.Ratherthanlookoutat

Biography
BorninWinfield,Alberta,in1953,Russell
absorbedfirst-handthecreativepracticalityand
geniusofhomesteadingparents.Growingupina
ruralcommunityasoneoftenchildren,she
learnedearlythesecrettolife’spursuits:practice,
patienceandperseverance.Itwasn’tuntilRussell
hadfinishedacombinedcareerof40-plusyears
inmotherhoodandagriculturethatsheshyly
enteredtheartworld.“Iwasdoingabitof
photographyandtookaleapoffaithandcourage
byjoiningtheBadlandsGallery,locatedin
Drumheller.Itwastherethatachanceremarkbya
fellowartist(thatperhapssomedayIwouldoil
paint)triggeredazephyrofresponsefromdeep
insideme.”

Thesepaintingsresonatewithmeontwovery
personallevels.MyhusbandandIownafourth-
generationgrainfarmoverlookingtheDrumheller
valley.Agricultureisoneofthemainindustries
providingemploymenttoDrumhellerandarea.My
husbandisalsoanaeronaut(balloonpilot),so
whentheballoonsfloatedthroughthe
“playground”ofcouleesandfieldswhilewewere
harvesting,itseemedlikeaperfecttimeto
capturetheessenceoftheBadlands.I’vebeen
toldwecan’tmoveintothefuturewithout
honouringthepast.Thiswasmyheartfelt
sentimentasIwascreatingthepainting
HonouringthePast.Myfather-in-lawwasacoal
miner.Yearsago,hundredsofcoalminesonce
operatedbythousandsofimmigrantmeninthe
Drumhellervalley.Thispaintingisdedicatedto
them.

Steadlovesthepracticeofart,whethershe’s
sketching,paintingorfollowingacreativeidea,
andshestrivestocreateartthatchallenges
herandmakesotherscurious.Shegrewupin
Cheltenham,England,andimmigratedto
Albertaintheearly1980sasanewlywedto
workandraiseafamily.Steadsaysthatasa
Canadianbutalsoasanimmigrant,shelooks
atlifeherewithgratitudeandthecuriosityofa

Overview
Thisprojectasksstudentstoreflectonwhat“home”and“place”
meantothem.Whilemanypeoplemakeupacityorvillage,each
person’sexperienceofthatplaceisunique,givenwhothey
know,wheretheyliveand/orwork,andfamilytiestotheplace
(orlackthereof).Thisphotographicmappingprojectasks
studentstocaptureimagesofpersonallysignificantplaces
withinthelocalcommunity:micro-environmentsthatare
meaningfultotheindividualsproducingthem.Oncephotographs
aretaken,edited,andprinted,theycanbedisplayedonamapof
thetowntoproducealargerinstallation.Thecompletedpiece
willillustrateacollaborativeinterpretationof“home”and
“place”andisdesignedforcommunityinteraction.

specificallyDrumheller,togroundtheirinterpretations
geographicallyandculturally,theartistshavefoundunique

takeallmaterialsoutside.Choosealandscapethat
speakstoyou.Perhapsitischaracteristicoftheplace
youlive,orperhapsitisparticularlybeautifulor
interesting.Keepinmindthatlandscapescanbeurban
orrural.Settleinanddecidewhatareayouwouldlike
tofocusonandwhatwouldmakeaninteresting
composition.
StepTwo
Onapieceofnewsprintorscrappaper,doaquick
sketchtopracticedrawingyourimage.Onceitis
complete,drawthelandscapeimageyouhavechosen
invery,verylightpencildirectlyonthewatercolour
paper.Trynottoeraseanythingasthiswilldamage
thesurfaceofthepaper.
StepThree
Paintyourlandscape.Forsofter,moreflowingareas,
putwaterdownonthepaperfirstthenaddpaint
(image2).Formoreintense,structuredareas,use
drier,moresaturatedpaint.
StepFour
Onceyourpaintingiscompletelydry,adddetailsand
outliningwithafine-pointfeltpen.Additionalcolour
andflourishescanbeaddedwithchalkpastelsand/or
colouredpencils(image3).
