Ever been called a black sheep? Well one could take it as a compliment because black sheep actually have a better sense of smell than white sheep.

Watching an hour-long soap opera burns more calories than watching a three-hour baseball game, providing that you are not eating while watching.

Crocodiles can go two years without eating and they do not have the ability to move their tongue.

You can actually sharpen the blades on a pencil sharpener by wrapping your pencils in aluminum foil before inserting them.

EDITOR’S NOTE

Dear readers,

First off I’d like to say welcome to INTI to all the new students and a welcome back to all the old students. Vacations over, that doesn’t mean the fun ends here. On the contrary, the fun has just begun.

This month, we will be celebrating the ever so popular day which is Mother’s Day. Our writer Jerusha has heard the truth from the INTI mothers themselves on what they think of motherhood. Ever wondered what kind of son/daughter you are? Check out what category you’re under with the test given by our writer Hafizah. Experience a flashback on all the crazy and exciting events that happened the previous semester in the eyes of our writer Naomi. Get your INTI survival kit with the advices given by our writer Han Sen.

We’re not only celebrating Mother’s Day this month, we’re also celebrating the INTI experience that all of us old students have gone through and would like to share with the new students. Let’s kick-start the new semester with new beginnings shall we?

901, 902, 903, 904…..

Do you have to count this amount of sheep before you can fall asleep? Do you toss and turn at ungodly hours, yet to no avail? The subtle ticks of the clock grow deafening as your frustration mounts. All else is asleep, yet you are awake: and alone. All this while, the clock continues to tick tauntingly.

Despair not; you may not be as alone as you think you are. You just might have insomnia, a sleep disorder that is estimated to affect 30-50% of the general population.

Insomnia is defined as the difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep, or both. It is therefore characterized by persistent problems in falling or staying asleep.

Nighttime symptoms of insomnia are frequent periods of wakefulness and inability to fall asleep. Daytime symptoms, though, are often more specific and clear. They include poor concentration, impaired memory and coordination, and increased irritability.

Some of the most common causes of insomnia are anxiety, stress, and depression. Young adult students are, unfortunately, among the high-risk groups for insomnia. Since college students sometimes pull all-nighters studying for an exam or completing assignments, they tend to disrupt their sleep patterns. If made a constant practice, this may eventually lead to circadian rhythm disorders, a major cause of insomnia. Also, excessive daytime

sleepiness caused by staying up all night can contribute to insomnia in following nights.

The symptoms of insomnia can be lessened by limiting stimulants such as caffeine and nicotine. Also, it helps to establish bedtime routines such as reading awhile before bedtime, avoiding large meals right before sleeping, and setting a time to wake up.

A few forms of medical treatment for insomnia are sleeping pills, antidepressants, and antihistamines. Some also use herbal medications.

Alternatively, an effective non-medical treatment known as cognitive behavior therapy can be applied. Two forms of this therapy are stimulus control and relaxation therapy. The former involves not oversleeping, avoiding lengthy daytime naps, limiting use of the bed to sleeping, and going to bed when feeling sleepy. Relaxation therapy promotes techniques that reduce anxiety, stress, and body tension. Some practices are meditation, listening to soothing music, and muscle relaxation exercises.

If the college lifestyle is what’s keeping you up at night, then here are four simple recommendations (I’m still learning to practice what I write!):

Maximize daylight. Use your daytime hours fully to complete assignments and limit your studying hours after nightfall.

Remove worries from your mind before you go to bed. Visualize your bed as a peaceful place for sleep. As you walk in your bedroom, imagine yourself leaving your anxieties outside the door.

Change your lifestyle. Reduce your consumption of alcohol and limit your cigarettes. Try not to have frequent clubbing trips and refrain from constant all-night partying.

Try exercising for a minimum of 20 minutes every morning. You’ll feel better, look better, and most importantly, sleep better.

If the entire above still isn’t enough to convince you, ponder this. According to a study that was lead by the American Cancer Society and analyzed by UC-San Diego, sleeping for less than six hours per day increases mortality hazards. This increased risk reached up to 15% for those who slept less than four and a half hours. So go home, relax, and get some shut eye tonight. After all, you just might extend your life.

Have you ever wanted to go globe-trotting? You know, to scale the Great Wall of China one day, and sip afternoon tea with the Queen of England, the next. Then, gape in awe at the ancient yet still magnificent Pyramids of Egypt, while later taking a stroll in the lushly green rainforests of the Amazon. Topping it all off by dancing ala Bollywood in the streets of Mumbai, India, and singing songs of l’amour in the City of Love. Such exhilarating adventures! Haven’t you ever wished you could be a part of them?

I did. I wished, and longed, and desired. But, like every ordinary Jane out there, I knew that imagination would have to suffice. After all, the bigger one dreams, the deeper one’s pockets must be in turn. And my pockets, like every ordinary student out there, are painfully shallow. Ah, the misery.

“By the time my wallets are suitably

fat enough for globe-trotting, my joints would be creaking, my face lined with wrinkles, and I wouldn’t be able to climb a single storey without wheezing,” was what I thought rather miserably. And I was probably right. But who needs cash, when you’ve got INTI? That’s right, you read me: INTI, the superior agency for all your travelling needs.

In just one semester, INTI flew me right around the world: the first stop being Egypt. The crumbling ancient pyramids, eternal seeming and proud… Not! The Egypt I visited with INTI’s help couldn’t be more different. Attending INTI’s Egyptian glamour-themed Orientation Night was an experience of Egypt during its glory days; an Egypt full of colorful pageantry, mascaraed happening people, and loud pulsating music. The crowning of the hunky Mr. and beautiful Ms. INTI, that night also deserves a mention. A truly exhilarating adventure,

more than just a simple excursion to Egypt, it felt like an amazing, out-of-this-world time-travel trip.

Next stop, China. And what better way to experience the essence of China than by celebrating Chinese New Year? In one night, INTI helped me partake in the joy of the New Year by celebrating the Year of the Ox with the aptly named Moo Moo Fiesta. With colorful red colors and equally colorful antics by onstage performers, the night was a blast!

Round and round the globe turns, and magically, I land in the primal jungles of the Amazon. Organized by INTI’s Rotaract Club, the Green Evolution Concert was a music-filled event designed to raise funds for the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). With performances by numerous bands and talented performers, the concert was an enjoyable night, which evoked in me, a strong feeling of doing something for our

Mother Earth.

But, the night, however enjoyable, was transient. In a flash and bang, INTI had me whisked straight to London Bridge. An English Day last March had me minding my P’s and Q’s, dotting my “i’s”, and crossing my “t’s”. With amusing, and at times, outright laugh-out-loud performances, the day was a smashing success; a success even Her Majesty would be proud of.

One day, I was in England enjoying tea and crumpets. The next had me warbling songs of l’amour in Paris, the City of Love. White Valentine’s Day; some had argued that it was naught but a girl’s greedy conspiracy to steal all the chocolates in the world, but that day, was a night event to rival the most romantic fireworks-filled night sky in all of Paris. Ah, l’amour… Not that I’m taken. Guys take note.

Early April had me whisked off for another

trip around the world, one final time. This time, I found myself in bold, daring India. The Indian Cultural Society-organized Indian New Year was an event marked by vibrant, colorful and energetic performances. A particularly brave and suave performer, INTI’s Very Own Johnny Boy, had many people exclaiming in delight over his rendition of a Tamil number. Despite zero proficiency and zero experience of the language, his melodious and lilting voice had many girls swooning and squealing in delight.

Then, the reality of exams crashed down on me, and I was unceremoniously dropped on the front-step of the library to enter into study overdrive. But, my trip around the world, last January semester, is one that I will always cherish, and endeavor to remember. Despite the exams overdrive, nay, because of the exams overdrive.

How did it feel when you first became a mother?

It was a very interesting experience. There are more responsibilities, but your kids make you brave. When I am scared I won’t let them see that I’m scared…because kids take examples from their parents. I become brave to make them brave. But your kids can also really get on your nerves!

Ms. Janitha, economics lecturer, mother of 2

Because you’re pregnant for nine months, when you finally deliver your baby it feels like a miracle. It’s a feeling unlike any other, but there are so many responsibilities.

Ms. Shima, SSD, mother of 3

Wonder what our mothers think of us? Jerusha Sanjeevi interviews five obliging and one not-so-obliging INTI mom.

inTi’S SuperWoMen: byJErushA sAnJEEvi

MoMMieS of THe 21ST cenTuryWith mother’s day looming ahead, this writer decided to take a peek into the world of motherhood. I set out on a pleasant Tuesday afternoon, hoping for beautiful interviews with inspiring words about the joys of motherhood. I sauntered over the college in search of the INTI mommies who would match my Hallmark-crafted reverie. Armed with five questions, I interviewed six INTI mothers. But as I would soon see, my self-centered notions of motherhood were in for an interesting ride.

With the abovementioned last question, it is safe to say my saccharine expectations had melted. Just like that, my perfect ideas of motherhood were razed to the ground. I didn’t get stories featuring adoring eyes or gentle cooing. Although I did receive some pleasant answers, the majority of answers were brutally realistic. Motherhood, I came to realize, couldn’t be farther from the saintly visions we might find straight off a movie. Our mothers face demanding careers, taking care of home, and the challenges we bring to them, all without letting us see them cry. Through my interviews with these six incredible women, I saw the huge weight of motherhood. Superseding the frustration and responsibilities, however, was their outstanding strength. And it is under the tired smiles and weathered hands of our mothers; our superwomen, that we learn to also be strong.

How did your life change after having a baby?

I’ve become very busy. No time for clubbing! You need to spend time with the baby and most of the time that you talk with friends, you will talk about your baby. I have to sacrifice some of my personal time.

Ms. Michelle, CAE, mother of 2

Lots of changes. It’s very tiring and stressful. There’s no more time for clubbing and going out to ‘mamak’. Sad…

The Anonymous Mom, CAE, mother of 2

What is most meaningful about motherhood?

Seeing your child grow up and not taking any wrong steps.

Ms. Low, Marketing Office, mother of 1

Having somebody who looks like you.

Ms. Michelle

What is the most rewarding thing about motherhood?

It teaches you to be responsible and disciplined. To bring up good children, parents must show good behavior and good habits. Children also bring happiness. They make you laugh; sometimes when you are frustrated they can really take your problems away.

Ms. Janitha

No rewards but there are lots of responsibilities.

The Anonymous Mom

It’s continuous; it is not a single thing.

Ms. Khor, (cornered and trapped) psychology lecturer, mother of 2

What did you feel when you first held your baby?

Nothing much because I had a c-section.

Ms. Janitha

Nothing.

MAMMA’S boy, DADDy’S gIrl You LOVE your parents. You have an uncommon healthy relationship with your parents for your age. You personally send any potential friends or love interests to your parents for their approval before you continue the relationship. You enjoy doing everything and anything for them: taking the trash out, cooking dinner, scooping up cat litter etc. So much so that your parents think you hang out too much with them and it’s getting highly suspicious.

Are you obedient or defiant? Warm or cold? Nice or unruly? How well do you get along with your parents? Which one of the five descriptions below closely resembles you? remember not to give your parents too much of a hard time…karma might bite back later.

WHAT KinD of SON/DAUGHTER ARE YOU

by hAfizAh JAMAL

SWeeT SloucH You’re affectionate and nice to your Ma and Da. Yes, you even smile and give them hugs when you come back from college. You wanted to get that nice necklace for mum, that wool sweater on 50% discount, and pick your brother up from school and buy the groceries. You really mean to. You’re just too tired after the long day of class to get off the couch. “It’s the thought that counts,” might be your personal motto.

lAISSez-fAIre SoN / DAugHTerYou mind your P’s and Q’s but some-times you may argue about idle things. When you’re at home, you mostly stay within the four walls of your room but you do eat dinner together and go shopping together occasionally. You don’t mind them, but usually it’s hard to squeeze the effort to hang out. You are your parents’ child only when you need extra money for shopping, a lift somewhere or approval for a holiday trip with friends.

freeDoM fIgHTerYou cannot have a decent conversation with your parents because the topic always switches to that new piercing on your face, that late night you had and the constant overspending. Taking advice from them is difficult because you feel that you’re too young to be tied down by rules. That said, deep down you know some of the words of wisdom make sense. You also have knack at doing the opposites of what they told you and take the daily mini arguements as a form of healthy interaction.

Qisti Zahairi of INTI Insider talks to Zackhary Yong about his job as a student helper in INTI’s Marketing Office.

inTerVieW WiTH ASTuDenT Helperby qiSTi p. zAHAiri

How did you get the job in the first place?

It all started with an exhibition in KLCC where a friend (May Chong) called and asked if I’m available as a student helper. It was during that exhibition that I found out through Miss Marilyn, a staff in Marketing Office, that they needed manpower to assist their tasks. Immediately, I said yes to the challenge.

Why be a student helper instead of a part time job outside?

It’s because of the flexible hours that comes with the job. Besides, it’s quite convenient since I have classes in the same building. There are also benefits that come with the job such as knowing the procedures, and staff. I feel more of an INTI-ian because of this.

How much is the pay?

They pay me 5 ringgit per hour. That’s not too bad a pay. As long as they pay more than McD’s, it’s good.

How is a typical day like?

Depends on the hours. It can be like a relaxing day at a spa, but during peak hours it can be as though hell’s gate just opened up.

Any interesting experiences so far?

Well, I guess it would have to be during one of the exhibitions of an education fair where I was mistaken to be a lecturer by parents and other councils from other colleges. That was an interesting experience. I didn’t think I looked that old.

Any complaints about the job?

That would be the time they take to process my paycheck. I still have yet to receive my paycheck from the last job and it feels as though I’m working for them unpaid. But when the check does come in, no doubt that there will be a big smile on my face.

Any secrets you’ve recently discovered during your job?

I found a stack of M&Ms hidden inside the office that I worked at. The culprit is yet to be discovered though. The whole office uses that hidden stash at our own disposal

since no one has claimed it and we get hungry quite often in the office. Finders keepers rule!

Any advice for student helpers-to-be?

Brace yourself for the tons of work you’ll be given. However, treat it as a challenge. You’ll feel very rewarding after you get whatever task given to you done. Also, be sure to manage your time correctly! Once I worked at the office and didn’t look at the time. I was one hour late for class.

Are you new to INTI college? unsure of what to do and where to start? fret not, because here is an insight into a typical day at INTI college.

A TypicAl DAy ofAn inTi STuDenT

by HAu HAn Sen

Okay, so I’ll lay down the essentials.

If you intend on driving down to INTI and secure a parking spot, better arrive at SS15 by 7.00am. Parking is a misery in this area so it is no surprise if you see students coming into class half an hour late gasping for air. Most likely, they have parked their vehicles further than expected and ran all the way to the sixth floor.

Next, always expect the worst when your class is on the 8th floor and you are waiting at the main elevator area with 2 huge references, a laptop and a messenger bag. The chances of the elevator being empty are close to nil. The solution? Well, there are 2. For some reason, not many students utilize the other elevators at the back hallway (near the cafeteria), so abuse them while you can. But now that I have placed this tip on this newsletter you can soon expect them to be full as well. The second solution is fairly simple: use the stairs. Just keep telling yourselves that the number ‘8’ is just a figure and does not reflect the exact number of floors you would have to

climb. In other words, be optimistic and happy ascending.

Moving on, you should start taking notice of your lecturers. More often than not, you would see students either rushing to class early or taking their own sweet time strolling to class even though they’re already late. Reason? The lecturers. To put it simply, if your class timetable has the name ‘Borges William’, get to class 15 minutes early.

With that said, what do students do after class? Some students have classes that start from 8.00am until 4.00pm. Yes, 8 consecutive hours of lectures with only a 10 minute break for every 2-hour classes. So the most natural thing to do would be, of course, EAT. And it is also one of the most frustrating things to do being a college student who are a crowd of indecisive people that can’t decide on what to eat.

Finally, we’ve reached the end of the day. Again, there are 2 types of students based on their “After-College” activities:

the homeless and the ‘I-must-get-out-of-this-place-ASAP’ students. The homeless are students who literally have nothing better to do after classes yet for some reason, stay back at INTI. They would update their Facebook accounts (no life), play MMORPGs on their laptops (no life) or study in the library (again, no life). Then, there are the complete opposites: students who would just rush back home after classes. I think I fit into this category: after a long day of endless lectures, I would love nothing more than a shower and my fluffy bed (again, no life).

What about assignments?Fluffy bed.

What about upcoming quizzes?Nice, fluffy bed.

What about mid-terms that start next week?Really, really nice and fluffy bed.

This is what happens when there are too many options, and you do not know which to choose. Why can’t we have all of them?

The 6th INTIMA Conference was held from 24th to 26th April 2009 and this year, the INTIMA of ICSJ had the privilege to be the host, led by Joshan Kyrashq, 33rd INTIMA President of ICSJ. INTIMA, short for INTI Malaysia, is the student government of INTI Colleges, with each campus having its own executive committee, while INTIMA conference is an annual event to gather INTIMA Executive Committees of all INTI campuses at a common platform to fuel discussions and ignite ideas to create a better INTIMA. This year 4 INTI campuses joined the conference namely, INTI University College, INTI College Sarawak, INTI College Sabah, and INTI International College Penang. We were also graced with Metropolitan College’s presence, our neighboring college, also part of INTI Education Group. The conference saw 66 participants with the largest contingent from the Penang campus. Seeds of Unity and Leadership (S.O.U.L) was chosen as the theme of the conference where the union between campuses and leadership of student leaders were strongly highlighted. The Opening Ceremony saw the presence of President Tan Yew Sing, the founder of INTI Education Group, Graham Doxey, Deputy CEO of INTI Education Group and Mrs. Joyce Yuen, Principal of ICSJ. With the E2E (Enrollment to Employment Service) emphasis at INTI, Mrs. Yuen stressed

the importance of being part of campus activities and highlighted previous INTIMA Presidents who are successful figures today owing to the training they had during their years in INTIMA. Mr. Doxey was pleased that INTIMA remains true to its tradition of bridging INTI and the student body with diligence and fervor. He reminded the conference participants that global resources and expertise are available through INTI’s synergy with Laureate International Universities (LIU) and looks forward to hearing about new ideas discussed in the conference. “INTIMA was established in 1987, how many of you were already born at that time?” asked Mr. Tan Yew Sing. Only 6 hands were up in the air. He continued to talk about the conception of INTIMA and its core purposes, INTI’s humble beginnings and his vision for a better INTI together with LIU. After some ice breaking sessions, the conference convened with the information sharing session which saw each campus sharing their operation procedures. Before long, the leaders identified a problem with standardization. Some INTIMAs had different commencement dates for their terms and the term length to suit the different programs they are enrolled in. This difference became a problem when it came to setting a date for next year’s conference as some INTIMA would be

A group of diligent students gathered amidst semester break, assignment craze and final exam week to talk about the future of the student body of their much loved campuses, the INTI campuses.

stepping down in a few months thereafter, making the implementation of ideas discussed difficult at such short period of time. Realising the impact of changing the commencement dates, the issue was agreed to be decided on later. Another interesting process brought to light was the selection of IICP’s INTIMA which were not by election but selection by the outgoing committee. This was unlike the usual campaigning and election process at other campuses. One of the major problems tabled during the discussion forum was how to deal with inactive or dead clubs. Metropolitan Student Council President Marc Zuriel Phillip shared an effective method that they have implemented successfully. Metro gives incentives to leaders of clubs and societies such as free parking space on campus grounds. INTI-UC (currently in their 13th term) on the other hand, suggested interaction between INTIMA Executive Committees and Club Presidents to learn the challenges faced by the individual clubs. He also suggested that INTIMA could also revive dead clubs by running an election for them, instead of completely removing the club. Another idea suggested was that INTIMA committee members adopt the struggling clubs by taking on advisory posts. Each campus exchanged their constitutions and operating manuals to explore possibilities of enhancing

their effectiveness in running clubs and societies. The forum also decided to forward their proposals on changes directly to President Tan Yew Sing after the conference once a consensus was obtained. The next two days of the conference were largely focused on forging a stronger bond between leaders through activities such as station games where the participants, split into 5 groups, ran around campus completing the tasks given. The organizers also planned a trip to KLCC in the afternoon and a barbeque dinner at night by the basketball court. The participants came to the conference uncertain on what to expect, how to solve their amounting crisis in handling the many club and societies but it was for certain that there will be much work to be done aside their assignments from lecturers when the participants headed home. The next conference was handed to Metropolitan College. Being the baby amongst the INTIMAs as its operations began 4 years ago, it would seem to be a challenge for them to improve on current systems. However, all campuses were confident that they will succeed and looked forward to the coming conference.Committee positions for INTIMA ICSJ will be up for elections very soon. Keep your eyes open and ears alert for announcements.

Happening:Campus Events

Swishing saris, swaying hips, addictive rhythms in Tamil hits it was pure and unadulterated dancing-singing mania at The Indian Cul-tural Society’s Indian New Year!

Starting with the décor which consisted of a beautifully designed aum symbol. The stage looked quite nice with its rich royal blue, gold and silver glitter as well as peacock feathers as embellish-ments.

The performances were Bollywood-tastic, what with its invigorat-ing dance performances by HELP University College, a duet by two brothers come prospective celebrities and a few delightful singing solos! The performers danced with full vigor and energy, shaking in places that one didn’t even know was shake-able. The beats from the Tamil and Hindi songs were infectious and made you feel like joining in the fun. A special mention has definitely got to go out to the lovely ladies of our College players who danced to hits from movies like Devdas with delirious fervency in their sensa-tional choreography. The other colleges put up a very good show as well most memorable being the group dance dancing to tradi-tional Tamil beats in color coordinated costumes.

The duet by the two brothers was especially entertaining they sang beautifully in harmony and even presented their self-com-posed song, a pleasant and soulful tune. Then we had two other

soloists, including INTI’s very own Johny-boy who bravely sang a Tamil number, oh-shanti-oh, despite the fact that he hardly speaks any Tamil. It was a very good effort on his part, since his voice was pretty melodious. There was even a guitar performance, a unique performance considering the theme.

There was even a Mr. and Mrs. ICS contest nominated from the au-dience, they were quite unsure of what they were doing on stage but at the very least they were good sports for taking the chal-lenge.

All in all despite a few technical hiccups here and there, the In-dian New Year was quite a success. They had a large audience who were very much entertained by the whole showing. My only com-plaint would be, that after all that wonderful dancing there wasn’t a dance floor!
