Those who work in the hospitality indus-try will be celebrating the festive season sharing holiday traditions with family,

friends and fellow ITB® employees. Many have long-standing traditions at

home and at work while also looking forward to a New year in the hospitality industry. Some In The Biz® employees have shared their holiday plans and their hospitality Reso-lutions for 2016.

Taylor Mason, a bartender at Lulu’s Bait Shack at Beach Place Fort Lauderdale, says her family has a big dinner and a gingerbread house decorating contest every Christmas.

“It’s my favorite time of the year and all my family gets together. My grandmother, cousins and the rest of the family have a big Christmas dinner with all the fixings and then

make gingerbread houses,” said Mason. While serving up drinks during the holidays

for her customers during the holiday season, Mason enjoys hearing about their holiday tra-ditions. Her hospitality resolution for the New Year is to “to continue to get to know more of her regular customers.”

Taylor Tremblay, who has worked as a server at Lulu’s Bait Shack for 7 years, always celebrates Christmas on Christmas Eve with her family.

“We have an Italian feast with lots of food and a big family, and many friends come to the dinner,” said Tremblay.

Tremblay says she enjoys making her cus-tomers happy during the holiday season. Her New Year’s Resolution for this year is: “being so well known among my customers that I no longer have to introduce myself! I just love working in the industry. It’s fun and exciting and there is always something new happening.”

Justine Russo, a bartender at Brother Jimmy’s in Brickell, will be making customers happy by serving up drinks at Brother Jimmy’s Ugly Sweater Christmas Party.

“Unfortunately, I’ll be far from my family this holiday. But this Christmas, I’ll be working at Brother Jimmy’s Brickell location for their Ugly Sweater Christmas Party. And when I’m not working, I enjoy exploring a variety of restaurant and bars and trying different cock-tails and cuisines. This is my tradition when I’m staying in South Florida for the holidays, and there are a plethora of options here in Miami,” said Russo.

Russo’s New Year’s hospitality Resolution this year is “to innovate several new creative cocktails no one has created yet!”

In The Biz Magazine®wishes everyone who works so hard this holiday season, a happy holiday and a Happy New Year!

Pelican Landingserves up the best catches and sunsets in town

By NICOL JENkINSEditor

There’s a hidden gem in your backyard where you can indulge on the fresh catch of the day without the high price, watch mega

yachts sail by on the intracoastal, feel like you are on vacation and have a front row seat to the best sunset view.

Pelican Landing, located at the end of the Hyatt Pier 66 hotel marina, offers a relaxed dining experience with indoor and outdoor seating and a full liquor bar with TVs to watch your favorite sports games.

Diners can watch the boats sail down the Intracoastal while tasting fresh seafood and a modern Caribbean cuisine in a welcoming atmosphere.

For over 35 years, Pelican Landing, which was

remodeled a year ago, has been a staple in the South Florida community.

“You get a little bit of everything here. It’s a relaxed atmosphere with great food and a decent price. Some people think we’re expensive because we’re located on the water, but diners don’t have to spend a lot here,” said Manager Adan Echeverria, adding, “Our customer service is excellent. We treat our customers the way we want to be treated! The atmosphere is very welcoming and fun.”

“Our customers call Pelican Landing home, and we treat them like friends,” said Alex Dolce, a server and in charge of social media.

The local restaurant has diners from all over the world vacationing and locals who come to feel like they are on vacation.

“it’s a hidden gem and a restaurant getaway. Even if you’re local, you feel like you are on vacation!” exclaimed Alex.

What is your ethnicity? I am Scotch-Irish, Spanish, but mostly Gringo.

Where do you work? I work at the Mellow Mushroom downtown Fort Lauderdale. Come get a pizza dis!

Where are you from originally? I am straight outta NoVA (Northern Virginia) Fairfax to be exact.

How long have you been inTheBiz®? I started at the bottom as a ice cream scooper when I 15 before I had any hairs on my chest.

What do you like best about bartending/Serving? I love the networking appeal of being In The Biz®. You get to connect with people from every walk of life, not just the people you would normally relate to in your day to day life. It helped me make a lot of new friends after moving to Fort Lauderdale and I got to meet a few snakes along the way too!

Why did you choose to become a bartender/server? With 48 rotating beers on tap, Craft beer is the big ticket, but anything on our happy hour from 2-7pm and 10pm-close Monday through Friday sells like hot cakes. (Paid advertisement by Mellow Mushroom Fort Lauderdale)

What is the most ordered drink? I love to make shots or anything that brings all eyez on me while I’m doing it. My favorite cocktail to make at Mellow is the Hendricks Refresher. The guests not only enjoy the process watching the drink get built but it tastes glorious too!

What can you share with new bartenders/server to make the most in tips? Besides the guests being numero uno a sense of urgency is a must! You gotta have lots of fun but if you’re not there to hustle then stay on the other side of the bar!

What is the worst pick up line you ever heard or used? Hey did you know that you could make a decent living selling hot dogs? Because you sure do know how to make a wiener stand.

What is the craziest thing that has happened at your work? Once at a bar I worked at these two dingle stains got in to a fist fight over what year the guys Bentley was. Talk about first world probz.

Miami hurricanes basketball off to hot start

sports

By ALLEN LEViN sPorTs EdITor

federal league is a great baseball option in south florida

The Miami Marlins may be the most recog-nizable professional baseball team in South Florida, but for baseball-hungry fans and

former players trying to stay in the game, there are other options to get your diamond fix.

That comes in the form of the Federal League, a South Florida based semi-pro baseball league that’s been in operation since 1993.

The league features former professional players, high-level college players from D1, D2 and the JUCO ranks who are looking to extend their careers.

“There were so many former professional players, high-level college players that never had an outlet to continue playing baseball, so we formed a league to continue their baseball careers,” Jamie Siragusa, the Federal League Commissioner, said.

The League has a total of 8 teams in 2 divisions (Original and Expansion Division) that compete in

2 seasons throughout the year, from October to February and April through the summer.

Each season has a 20-game regular season, with 2-3 games played each week, culminating in a league championship, a best-of-5 game series between the best squads.

Over the 20 + years of existence, the Federal League has produced over 270 players, who have either had former pro experience or subsequently went on to play pro ball, including Randall Simon, Armano Benitez, Jose Vidro, Doug Jennings, Craig Eaton and Mike Caruso.

For players that are interested, the league holds tryouts several times throughout the year, while each team fields a 25-man roster. The next tryout will be on Saturday, January 30 at 9:30 a.m. at the Pompano Baseball Complex.

Fans can check out games at the Pompano Base-ball Complex (formerly the Texas Rangers Spring Training facility), where roughly 80% of the games are played, as well as the Coral Springs Sportsplex.

Ultimately, the Federal League prides itself on good baseball and being an outlet for players to continue chasing their passion.

“What we’ve been trying to accomplish since the beginning and our main goal is to have good baseball in South Florida,” Siragusa said. “We want to have the most organized, most struc-tured and most professional atmosphere, and any of our fans to come and be a part of good baseball.”

Through all the transition and unevenness of the Miami Hurricanes football team over the last few years, the UM basketball team

has quietly ascended as the school’s top sport. While the Hurricanes football program con-

tinues to battle mediocrity, coaching changes

and underwhelming seasons, the Hurricanes basketball squad has strung together 4 consecu-tive winning seasons under coach Jim Larranaga, including a NCAA Tournament berth and two NIT appearances.

It may not be what “The U” is accustomed to, but the basketball team has been successful and consistent.

That hasn’t changed this season either. As of the writing of this article, the Hurricanes

are 7-1, 2nd in the ultra competitive Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), and ranked the No. 17 team in the country.

The hot start has come after huge upset wins over No. 16 Utah and No. 22 Butler, in which the Canes won the two contests by a combined 34 points. Their lone loss came in a 1-point defeat to Northeastern on a buzzer beater.

Other than that lone setback, Miami has been

pretty dominant, winning by an average margin of 19.4 points per game so far.

They are being paced by a strong offense, which currently ranks 12th in the country in scor-ing at 88 points per game.

Senior Sheldon McClellan has led the way, av-eraging 16 points per game on 59% shooting and a ridiculous 52 percent shooting from the 3-point line (as of the writing of this article).

The team is also getting strong contributions from Angel Rodriguez, Ja’Quan Newton, Davon Reed and TonyeJekiri to round out a formidable rotation.

It is still early on in the season, but this Canes basketball squad looks very good and has an excellent shot to make their second Big Dance appearance in the last 4 years.

Move over Hurricanes football, because the basketball team is here to stay.
