D. Summary and Observations

Trade show

With a strong line-up of activities covering key areas such as Industry 4.0, intelligent production and the huge demand for cross-platform cooperation, CIFM / Interzum Guangzhou to be held between March 28 and 31, 2019 will be the focal point of more than 1,500 exhibitors from home and abroad as well as the global furniture manufacturing industry. American Softwoods decorated our booth with Southern Yellow Pine lumber, wall panels and a reception desk. Some of local wood trading company said that the market for softwood lumber slowed considerably in the second half of 2018 as the Chinese economy lost momentum and trade disputes with the U.S. persisted. During the tradeshow, many wood trading companies were concerned about the trade war between China and the United States. If the United States will not eliminate tariffs on softwood lumber and logs, buyers are less likely to purchase those products. The tariffs hitting softwood lumber imports for both countries. Many people asked about what species used for sofa frame, wooden furniture, landscape design and pallets. Most of visitors were furniture manufactures, wood traders, logistic companies, designers, distributors, and landscape engineering companies.

All of Softwood Export Council and Southern Forest Products Association publications were dis-played at the booth. During the tradeshow, about 370 visitors stopped by our booth and a total of 111 people left their contact information. We got 43 questionnaires filled by companies.

E. Conclusions and Recommendations

China is the second largest timber consumer in the world. With the development of China's econo-my, there is a growing demand for timber from industries of construction, papermaking and furni-ture manufacturing. However, the timber production grows slowly in China as restricted by timber resources and the rising costs of logging. China is running out of wood and will need increased im-ports. China’s domestic forest harvest is decreasing, while its demand for imported logs and lumber is increasing. This is good news for exporters, but Russian exports — especially of softwood lumber — have taken the bulk of the increase. China’s market demand and import outlook will be assessed in relation to the potential supply from Russia and other exporting countries. Included in the analy-sis will be the reach of Russian exports due to shipping more kiln-dried and higher-valued lumber, as well as the impact of block trains and the One Belt/One Road initiative.

As China’s credit shortage and consumer confidence worsens, so has the demand for forest prod-ucts. The volume of imported softwood products during the first three quarters of 2018 dropped 11 percent compared to the same period in 2017. This is a sharp contrast to 2017, when U.S. forest products exports rose 9 percent, compared to only a 1 percent increase in 2016 and a sharp 16 per-cent drop in 2015. The main reason for the 2017 rebound was China. Exports to China, the largest U.S. trade partner for forest products, were up 21 percent from 2016. Producers of southern yellow pine exported 41 percent more to China in 2017 than they did in 2016. But softwoods weren’t alone in the rebound. And no one knows at this point what will happen during 2019.

Some Chinese enterprises have begun to invest in the forestry industry in other countries, mainly Russia, to ensure a stable and adequate supply of timber. By the end of 2018, more than 100 Chi-nese enterprises had invested in Russia's forestry industry with a total of over USD 2 billion. And the figures are expected to grow further. The Chinese government has few restrictions on timber im-port. Therefore, the Chinese market will provide global forestry enterprises with numerous oppor-tunities in the next few years.

This show can provide opportunities to observe trends in Chinese furniture making and to identify large wood users and buyers among the wood processing industry. Therefore, more efforts should be made and continuous endeavours should be done in Guangdong area to educate buyers about the benefits and uses of American softwoods.
