This autumn edition of WTC Today has a special focus on the good causes which are based at the WTC. It might seem odd, but three charitable foundations actually have their offices here and the WTC organisation reduces their bills. We do this because we believe we all have a responsibility to give something back to society and we hope that our tenants feel that way too. You can find out more about them and how you can help support the great work they do on pages 7 to 11.After years of preparation, work has now started on the total overhaul of Tower Ten, as we are calling this spectacular project. You may have noticed that parts of the car park have now been closed, as work starts on the foundations of the new building. We are doing our best to minimise the disrup-tion, but some will be inevitable, so we ask you to bear with us. You can find out more about the project and how to deal with any

nuisance on page 4.Accessibility remains a pressing issue throughout Zuidas, although the new Noord-Zuid metro line is a big plus, especially to people travelling to the WTC from the north of Amsterdam or arriving at Central Station

by train. If you’ve decided to investigate ditch-ing the car and start travelling to the WTC us-ing public transport, there are still some plac-es open in our trial. The experiment involves giving up the car one day (or more) a week for a full month and using public transport or a bike instead. You’ll be pleased to hear that the landlord is picking up the bill for the alternative mode of transport. Please get in touch with me if you would like to take part in this experiment. The public transport trial is just one of the initiatives we are undertaking to try to make life easier for you, our tenants. We’re also in-creasing our presence on social media – Fa-cebook and Linked In – to keep you better in-formed about new developments at the WTC. Is this the way to go, and should we, perhaps, discontinue the production of this magazine? Next issue we’ll be asking you for your ideas about other products and facilities that we can introduce to improve our services.

A touch of HawaiiYou may have noticed a change in the choice of food on offer at the counter between STACH and Ox & Bucks. New-comer Poké Perfect has taken the place of Mylk, offering an Hawaiian-style special: the poké bowl. Poké Perfect was founded by brother and sister Gerrit Jan and Quinta Witzel and the Zuidas branch is the company’s fourth in Amsterdam. Poké is a Hawaiian dish, originally consisting of sushi rice, raw fish and several different toppings served in a bowl. If you are not a raw fish eater, don’t worry as they also offer tofu and chicken versions.

On November 8, WTC Amsterdam and WTC Amsterdam Business Club are hosting a reception and concert at the Concertgebouw organised by Musix for You, who also put together the occasional central hall concerts. Guests will enjoy drinks and a stand-up dinner from 6pm and then move to the Kleine Zaal concert hall for an intimate concert

presented by Örzse Adam and radio presenter Ab Nieuwdorp. This Salon Classique ‘Mediterraneo’ will be performed by the A’dam Diviso quintet (19th century guitar and strings) and includes works by Paganini, Molino and Boccherini as well as French-man, De Fossa. For tickets: WWW.WTCAMSTERDAM.COM

Mediterranean music to bring back summer

CHRISTMAS IS  COMING. . .The nights are drawing in, summer is definitely over and Albert Heijn is already selling pepernoten. That can only mean one thing: Sinterklaas and Christmas are on their way. As every year, the children of WTC workers will be invited to the traditional Sinterklaas party, which will be held this year on Wednesday, November 28. This will be followed three weeks later by a Christmas market and drinks to mark the start of the holidays. More details to follow by email.

Getting down to businessAs well as co-hosting the Concertgebouw concert on November 8, WTC Amsterdam Business Club is already planning next year’s events. The line-up kicks off with the annual New Year drinks party on January 9, at which a prominent economist or business leader will outline their views on the prospects for the coming year. Is there someone you would particularly like to hear? Contact God-fried Schölvinck ([email protected]) with your suggestions. The next item in the business club’s 2019 diary is a very special visit to the Rijksmuseum on March 19. More news on that next issue.

UNDER CONSTRUCTIONAfter over a year of preparation, work has finally started on tower D and you may well have noticed that part of the car park has been closed off. The new look Tower Ten, as it has been renamed, will be mainly used for offices but will have state of the art facilities as well. Work is slated for completion in 2021.

In the meantime, a special project group has been set up to try to keep the impact of the building work to a minimum. We’ll update you regularly via news flashes. If you experience any problems please contact the Servicepoint.

A new look for central hallAfter months of work – and wondering what they were doing with all those pieces of wood – the new look central hall is finally open for business! The fresh new look, which match-es the approach in lobby I/H, includes cosy

corners to sit in, lounge chairs to relax in, ta-bles to work at (and plug in your laptop) and a coffee bar – all overlooked by giant wooden trees. It was great to see so many of you at the opening party.

CASPAR VAN ROOIJEN IMC WEEKEND SCHOOLYes, that’s all I do! I work for IMC Weekend School – its a non-profit organisation which works in places in the Netherlands where the help is the most needed and where people don’t have a lot of money. Children go to school on Sunday and they learn how, for example, a doctor does his job, or a lawyer. I invite the guests, I host the room and I am the teacher. I believe that there’s such a big difference between the rich and the poor at the moment and I want to reduce that gap. I believe in this way of teaching because I realise that I need to see someone be passionate about what they do, to generate that in me. (Read more about Weekend School on page 10)

ERI MAKINO SUMITOMO MITSUI BANKING CORPORATION (SMBC)I have just moved to the Netherlands but before I moved here I was in Singapore and I organised yearly charity trips to Vietnam for my bank. I am also sponsoring a girl in Peru. I used to think that it costs a lot to sponsor a child, but my friend told me about an organisation and it’s only $50 a month, or so. They keep you informed about the child and we’re kind of like pen pals. I’m motivated to have something to tell her every time I write. She knows that I’m her sponsor and we have that relationship.

WIM DE GIER LEASEPLAN GLOBALI get some bonuses at the end of the year. I have a young daughter and we go to a retirement home and I ask for just two names. There’s usually some strange feedback: ‘Who are you?’ ‘Are you a priest?’ I say, ‘No, I’m not. It’s also not important who I am.’ I always get these two names: one is a person who is lonely and the other is a person who does not have too much money. Then I go to the Albert Heijn supermarket and I buy as much as possible and I then I bring it, together with my daughter, and we have a conversation with the elderly people. We always get a lot a positive feedback.

DINESH JETHOE HUNTER RECRUITMENTI do not [do any charity work] at the moment because I just started a new job. Before that I was looking for a new job and I did not have the time or resources. I was a karate coach in the past – that was fun, but I’ve done nothing more.

Celina Korthals WANTS TO HELP CHILDREN REALISE THEIR POTENTIAL

The Big Brothers Big Sisters foundation is the latest good cause to find a home at the WTC. ‘Corporate sponsors would put us on a firm financial footing,’ says the charity’s director Celina Korthals.

Big Brothers Big Sisters has been located in a small room in the WTC since February after Celina ap-proached the complex’s management about rent-ing a possible space. The WTC backs the project with a rent cut and, says Celina, the project is very happy to be here. ‘One of the reasons we are at the WTC is that we hope that all these companies will support us, because there are so many children who have talents and other hidden strengths which don’t get the chance to blossom,’ says Celina. ‘We want to offer them that chance. And it would be great to do this together with some of the com-panies at the WTC.’Big Brothers Big Sisters is a mentor organisation that supports disadvantaged children in Amster-dam. ‘We link children who are growing up in poverty in Amsterdam with a volunteer so they can do things together for at least a year,’ Celina explains. ‘It can be anything, but the main focus is on expanding the child’s horizons. One in five children in Amsterdam grows up in poverty and these are children who don’t have the opportuni-ties that most of their peers have. We want to help these children achieve their potential.’

YOUTH GANGSCelina, who is 35 and has three children of her own, got involved with the Big Brothers Big Sis-ters organisation after graduating in international law almost 10 years ago. ‘I had to do some research on youth gangs in El Salvador and Honduras and visited some of the lads in prison,’ she explains.

‘They often came from single parent families, had a mother who was busy with their own problems and no time for the child. This is where I came to realise the importance of preventative measures … You need to step in as early as you can and help a child to make their dreams come true.’The BBBS concept comes from America and was actually founded in 1904 by a court clerk who wanted to do something about the number of young people ending up in front of a judge. He ap-proached a local business club for volunteer men-tors and 40 came forward. The movement spread throughout America, and by 1912, there were BBBS operations in 26 American cities. The organisation continued to grow and in 1995 a major research project was published whose re-sults verified what the organisation had long be-lieved: children from disadvantaged backgrounds do better at school, have more self-confidence, are less likely to drink and take drugs, and are better rooted in society if they have a mentor to help guide them.

MILESTONE‘That was a milestone not only for the organisa-tion, but for mentorship in general,’ says Celina. ‘Rotterdam eventually got wind of the programme and brought it over and I worked there for a few years after I graduated. But I live in Amsterdam and I know there are so many children here who could do with a helping hand. After a lengthy pro-cess, I was able to start up here.’ Today the Amsterdam operation has over 100

children in its one-to-one programme and a long waiting list of children. The group also organises a ‘big bunch’ club for children who are waiting for a big brother or a big sister, which involves group activities every two weeks. ‘The children are aged five to 18, but 75% of ours are primary school level,’ she says. ‘All our children grow up in pov-erty … In the Netherlands, that means that you cannot take part in things which children in the average family can. They often come from single parent families or big families which have their own problems, but we also have refugees who are lost and don’t understand how things work. It’s a really varied bunch.’

ADDED VALUECelina is hoping that WTC companies will realise the added value of a project which gives back to society like this. ‘In reality it is a win-win situa-tion. If you ask our volunteers how they find the role, they will tell you it is just as rewarding and educational for them as it is for the children. It can help you develop leadership qualities as well, which can benefit your career,’ she says. The activities range from playing football in the park and helping with homework to visiting a museum or finding out more about jobs. Celine tells the story of the ‘little brother’, as they call the children, who wanted to make computer games. Through the programme he met a ‘big brother’ with an IT firm and now he may get an internship there. ‘We always try to make sure there is a link

Page 9: INTERVIEW - WTC Amsterdam · FIT20 COMPANY WEBCAST Want to get in shape and stay that way in just 20 minutes ... started on the total overhaul of Tower Ten, ... will be performed

between the child and the adult’s interests,’ she says. ‘However, doing things together is just one aspect of the job. Much of the strength of the mentorship comes from the attention and the interest of the big brothers and sisters in his or her match. You are not a social worker or a par-ent or a teacher, and the children react to you in a different way.’

NOT ENOUGH TIME?Many of the big brothers and sisters are young professionals with a good job, a house, and are pretty settled. They are in their late 20s and usually don’t have their own children yet. Oth-ers are older with children who left home and who have the time to give something back. The minimum age to be a volunteer is 21. Big broth-ers and sisters go through a strict and intensive screening process, including a long interview at their own home, so the BBBS team can get a better picture of what they are like, their quali-ties and their interests. The money for all this comes from charity funds plus some corporate sponsorship. The city council, which refers lots of children to the project, does not yet put any money into it. ‘Ide-ally we would have a combination of all three to give it a firm basis,’ says Celina. ‘If every company in the WTC would adopt one match – and that costs €1,250 a year – we’d be in great shape. We have a long waiting list and we need people to volunteer as well. We think there are so many more young professionals out there who could do this but they’ve got busy jobs and no time. But I always say, it is not a question of time, but of priorities … We have people who have been doing it for years, despite their busy jobs and social lives.’

DREAMSCelina herself still has a ‘little brother’ in Rot-terdam whom she has watched grow up and whom she still sees. ‘It is about having an adult friend, someone who has experiences which you have never had and can listen to you and point you in the right direction,’ she says. ‘I’ve watched him grow up from a nine-year-old to a young man who is bigger than me and about to start a college course.’ ‘We should all help children to realise their dreams,’ she says emphatically. ‘That is what we all should want. Children are the future. It might seem a cliché but it is true.’

Charity begins at the WTC

Good causes are intrinsically linked with business through sponsorship, so it is only appropriate that the WTC is home to several charitable foundations.

‘Companies have a social responsibility to give something back to society,’ says WTC managing director Christiaan Huijg. ‘We want to contribute too, which is why we make office space available for a reduced rate, and use our facilities to help someone. And, of course, there are lots of compa-nies located here who can contribute either with time and expertise or money.’The WTC’s support is for low-key charities which don’t have big name sponsors or flashy advertis-ing campaigns to drum up support. Big Brothers Big Sisters (see interview page 8) provides vol-unteer mentors for children in Amsterdam who are growing up in poverty. It helps the children realise their potential and can trace its roots back to America over 110 years ago. IMC Weekend School, by contrast, is a home-grown charity which is celebrating its 20th an-niversary this year. The project provides supple-mentary schooling for children (aged 10-14) from underprivileged neighbourhoods, often with mi-grant backgrounds.

Every Sunday, 1,100 students attend the classes. Over a three-year period, volunteers introduce them to a wide range of topics, including journal-ism, medicine and law, but also training in pres-entation, research, debate and conflict resolution. The weekend school’s 2,600 alumni have gone on to study medicine, law, accountancy and set up their own businesses. The organisation was founded by psychologist Heleen Terwijn with the help of IMC (Interna-tional Marketmakers Combination) and both have been located in the WTC for some 10 years. Heleen developed the idea after doing research into the future perspectives of children grow-ing up in Amsterdam’s Bijlmermeer district, which had a poor reputation at the time. ‘I was so shocked by the results,’ she says. ‘A child aged 10 is so full of dreams and fantasies but if you don’t feed their natural curiosity, they lose it and it does not come back.’Heleen gave up her job to set up the Weekend School and now, 20 years on, there are 10 schools

across the country, plus a thriving alumni net-work. The Weekend School also provides help for 1,000 children, including refugee children, in regular schools. ‘We want to create a place where children at the age of 10 can meet interesting peo-ple, hear great stories and realise that there is so much more to do in the world,’ she says. Among the school’s success stories is Mohammed, who was sent to the lowest level of secondary school but is now a doctor at Amsterdam’s AMC teach-ing hospital. ‘The school’s alumni continue to help each other,’ says Heleen. ‘They come back to school to teach the children, they have set up their own networks, and we continue to help with cv writing and getting ready to apply for jobs.’

SPONSORSHIPBeing located in the WTC gives another edge to the organisation, Heleen says. ‘It’s a fantastic, vi-brant place to be, and we are so grateful that the WTC organisation is an in-kind sponsor.’ At the same time, Heleen hopes more WTC companies will get involved in the foundation’s work. ‘We’re so close,’ she says. ‘And we’re very happy to or-ganise a lunch to tell our story. It takes €4m a year to fund what we do, and we do all the fundraising ourselves. We welcome every form of help, from financial to volunteer teachers. People who are passionate about their jobs can transfer that to the younger generation.’In another part of the complex is the Max Foun-dation, which focuses its efforts abroad, namely in Bangladesh and Nepal, and is now poised to move

into Ethiopia. The charity has been located in the WTC since August 2016 and was founded 11 years ago by Joke le Pool and her husband Steven after their son suddenly died of a rare viral infec-tion at the age of just eight months. The water, sanitation and nutrition crisis is the second biggest killer of children and a hidden threat for a healthy start in life, which is why Max Foundation chose WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene) plus nutrition and safe motherhood as its focus in the poorest communities in one region: South Asia. The charity aims to change habits in the long run, with the help of people on the ground, and focuses on making the most out of every euro.

VALUE FOR MONEYIn fact, everything Max Foundation does stems from getting maximum value for money, which makes the foundation’s presence in the WTC

Raise money for cancer researchOn November 24, a thousand people, dressed in their finest, will sit down for a gala dinner in the Elicium ballroom at the RAI convention centre, just up the road from the WTC. The DNA Gala has been organised by Hospitality Support Group, a WTC com-pany, and a group of volunteers on behalf of the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek hospital in Amsterdam. The hospital specialises in can-cer research and treatment. ‘We are aiming to raise as much money as we can for re-search into immune therapy, which is one of the most promising cancer treatments there is,’ says Amanda Boesjes, of the Hospi-tality Support Group organising team.

The evening will be hosted by Dutch ac-tress and musical star Chantal Janzen to-gether with comedian and presenter Tijl Beckand and will include performances by US singer Oleta Adams and master il-lusionist Victor Mids. In total, 100 tables for 10 people are up for grabs and guests will also be able to take part in a charity auction and lottery. ‘It has to be a party, but we also need to remember what we are doing it for,’ says Amanda. ‘For me, working in a commercial environment, it is great to be able to give something back to such an iconic institute.’ WWW.DNAGALA.NL

even more appropriate. Joke is, however, quick to stress that the foundation is not paying Zuidas rent for its office. ‘But being located in the WTC shows that Max Foundation is not a standard NGO. We take a business-like approach to mak-ing a difference,’ says Joke. The team is now working with other NGOs on multiple projects and is looking to start up opera-tions in Ethiopia. ‘We are learning from them and they are learning about our innovative approach,’ says Joke. ‘We believe that you need to try, then you learn and you adapt.’ The move into Ethio-pia, she says, is a case in point. ‘We want to be where we can have the biggest impact and you can’t ignore Africa,’ she points out. ‘We did a lot of research to find out where we can help with our approach, because we believe that the commu-

nity itself has to be involved and be proactive. We came up with Ethiopia and we are now finalising our plan and looking for partners.’The foundation depends on corporate sponsors and, Joke says, they are open to contributions from everyone. ‘There are lots of ways of helping,’ she says. ‘Of course we need money, that is easy, but people have all sorts of skills that we can use as well.’

How big should Zuidas get?

The new Noord-Zuid metro line has been running since the summer and has already cut journey times to Zuidas considerably for peo-ple living close to the metro stops. But what if you come from further afield? Hello Zuidas, Amsterdam’s transport authority GVB, and the Zuidasdok organisation, have set up a three-month project that allows you to park in Noord

and take the metro to Station Zuid – without it costing you a cent, for a period of one month. The aim is to find out if the new route does make it quicker for Zuidas workers to get to the office and to encourage the city to possibly set up a park and ride scheme. You have to live north of Amsterdam to participate. WWW.HELLOZUIDAS.COM/NOORDZUIDLIJN

We all know Zuidas is expanding apace – not only upwards, but geographically. But just how big should it get? A new area called Verdi is cur-rently being developed on both sides of the A10, west of Zuidas, near the Olympic stadium. It’s an area where water, recreation, nature, sport, living and working all come together and Hello Zuidas

would like to find out what you think about the plans. Should this area become part of what is, af-ter all, largely a business community? Or should Zuidas offer opportunities to everyone? Find out more and take part in the survey here: HELLOZUIDAS.COM/DOE-DE-ONLINE-ENQUETE-EN-ONTDEK-VERDI

GETTING TO ZUID FROM NOORD

GO ON SAFARIThe hectic life in Zuidas is the inspiration for Safaripark Zuidas, a new musical being performed this November in restaurant Circl, in the Nieuwe Poort, and at ROC college, which has provided the dancers and some of the behind-the-scenes staff. What makes you happy? A fat bank account or lazing around on a sunny afternoon? And would you an-swer an email from your boss at 11pm? These are just some of the issues the show takes on board. ‘In principle, Zuidas should not be any different to the average Dutch business district, but on Zuidas things are a little more extreme, which makes it a great basis for our performance,’ says actress Janke Dekker. Order tickets via theater-opdezuidas.nl.

Don’t get lostHello Zuidas has published a new map of the district, so you’ve no excuse for getting lost – even though Zuidas is growing at a tremendous rate. The map includes a handy list of places to stay; where you can eat, drink and shop; as well as public transport, bike routes and more. There is also an entire section dedicated to ‘learn and explore’. Well, did you know Zuidas has its own botanical garden? You can pick up a copy of the map from the Hello Zuidas office on the ground floor. Hello Zuidas also has a new website.
