Confidence is earned and you can gain it through preparation.

Remember: if they call you for an interview, they believe you can do the job – if they’re calling you they are looking for qualities and potential so don’t worry about not having some of the skills but PREPARE!! – Prepare to answer to fill that gap where you don’t have a match with the position

It’s surprising how many people don’t look further than the website. One of the biggest turn offs for an employer panel is when you re-gurgitate the website. For all you know the person asking you questions wrote the content on the website!

Follow the Company on Twitter and find out what their customers are Saying about them!

To ensure you fully understand the Company culture make sure you can explain how they differentiate themselves from their competitors.

Example – feedback from Employer: Employer wanted to do a 2nd interview with one student (a Danish/British student who he interviewed last) but when he contacted him the next day, that student had already accepted another job. He was very impressed with this student’s level of research and preparation for the interview.

The other students he interviewed were not nearly as prepared or informed as this one student, so when he didn’t get the 2nd interview he resolved to look at other applications he had received in the meantime through his own website. He said that “it wasn’t that there was anything wrong with the other students, but more that the last Sauder student was so clearly head and shoulders above the others, he decided he wouldn’t be happy with anyone from that group except his first choice.” Ultimately he hired a UBC Economics/Sauder grad (not sure).

You may have heard people say 80% of communication is non-verbal! Well it’s actually 93% - I Googled it, not once, but twice!

It’s not always what you say, but how you say it! What’s your energy level like in the interview? Do you have a firm handshake? Good eye contact, especially if an interview panel.

Reams of psychological research suggest that while most body language does not communicate information per se, it does advertise an attitude. And the wrong attitude can mean the difference getting the job or not!

This starts in the lobby as employers often ask front-line staff what they thought of potential candidates. Be professional in the lobby as this is really where the interview starts!

Professional polished appearance is a mustYou should always dress a notch above the people who are already working there – that’s why it’s smart to go there in advance to look around and have an idea

No scents – cologne free zones

Bring a professional portfolio with copies of your resume on quality bond paper – there is one thing about this, they will think the applicant is of higher quality – laser print, white, buff or light grey are ok!

6 seconds to make a very good impression – in the first 5 minutes of the interview the hiring manager will decide if you are a good fit.

Nobody is going to hire anybody they don’t like – smile!!!

Your body language says a lot – more than what you actually say (only 7% of your communication)

Practice answering behavior-based questions before the interview. Take time to think of a good example rather than giving the first response that comes to mind.

- Do not restate facts found on company’s website- Do not ask questions that were answered during course of interview- Do not ask questions about salary or benefit issues

- Send an email to all the interviewers you have met for the interview. Card is a nice touch, it will be remembered.

- What to say: thank you for the opportunity. I really enjoyed our meeting and learning more about your company. In particular, I was impressed by…

- You can also follow up on a question that you think you did not nail down during the interview; back it up and say you had the chance to think about it a bit more

- Thank you notes are part of the process!! It is expected and if you don’t send it, it will be noticed (bad!).
