1. Thanks for your time, Ian. Firstly, how did you find your way to the oche?

“I found my way to the oche playing on a Sunday afternoon, at the Norton Arms, Runcorn with friends.”

2. You reached the final of the News of the World in 1997, was this when you realised you had the capability to compete with the very best?

“No, I was still working full time and only competed to see if I could get a good enough return, £250 to be exact, to buy a living room carpet.”

3. Following the 1997 final, you stepped back from the world of darts, why was this?

”Confidence was lost even though I got to the final and took two years out, as I felt I was always getting beat, so I removed myself totally from the game.”

4. You’ve lifted two European Tour titles in just under a year, do you feel these titles are essential in trying to bring your floor form to the big staged events?

“I have now won three European events, and also two finals. My confidence has grown from the floor tournaments and goals at the beginning of 2019 were set. I pushed for better performances on stage, [for] more practice and pushed myself, making my confidence grow.”

5. Colin Lloyd recently insisted it is time for Ian White to deliver on the big stage, do you agree?

“Yes I agree, but every tournament you want to win, not just on the big stage.”

6. The World Series did not have you included on this year, did you feel hard done by when the lineup was released?

“No, not at all, it is up to the selectors who they pick.”

7. You have been spotted dabbing on the stage prior to your matches, where did the ‘Diamond Dab’ come from?

“I was attending a friends party. Whilst dancing away, we were messing about, dabbing, and my step daughter dared me to do it on stage at the Grand Prix. She never thought I would do it.”

8. You have joined the Elite Sports Management stable recently, what was the reasoning to make the switch from Dunvegan? How much has the new management team been helping you?

“My contract had come to an end with Dunvegan and I was forever grateful for their support, however, I felt that I needed a fresh approach to 2019, the new setup and support from Elite Sports Management.”

9. You lifted the Dutch Darts Masters, denying Michael van Gerwen in the final, how much did this mean to you?

“It meant a massive achievement had been made. I set a lot of goals at the beginning of the season and to get more than one European trophy in one season meant a lot, whether it was Michael or any other player on the circuit, that wasn’t the main issue. But, to have had a chance of beating the world number one on his home turf, meant more, and after Michael beating me in two other finals, well I wanted revenge.”

Ian White

ian White discusses the ‘diamond dab’, his european sucess and the world matchplay.

10. It was a disrespectful crowd to say the least in the Netherlands, how hard was it to play in front of the crowd?

“It was extremely hard as Michael van Gerwen being Dutch, was not only the world number one, but also Dutch! Of course they wanted him to win, it is only natural to support your player from your own country.”

11. The World Matchplay is coming up soon in Blackpool, are you looking forward to the event?

“I always love the World Matchplay in Blackpool, the atmosphere of the crowd, and the venue - the Winter Gardens - is electric, it always brings the hairs up on my neck.”

12. Do you have any favourite or standout memories of watching the World Matchplay in the past, besides your own successes? And what makes the Matchplay so special to you?

“Years ago, I never really watched the World Matchplay, it was always the World Championships, but one standout memory for me there, was the games between Phil Taylor and Dennis Priestley.”

13. Finally Ian, what are your aims for the near future in darts?

“My aims are high, to establish myself in that top 10, and win that major or major titles.”

in the field THE 2019 RUNNERS AND RIDERSThis year’s Matchplay is one of the strongest fields ever assembled, and was only confirmed at the last possible minute.

The draw was scheduled for the week commencing July 8, after we went to print.

Jamie Hughes’ stunning Czech Darts Open victory meant that he snatched the last available spot from James Wilson.

‘Yozza’s’ 8-3 final win against Stephen Bunting in Prague pocketed the Black Country thrower £25,000 to move him sufficiently up the ProTour rankings and therefore qualify for Blackpool.

UK Open champion, Nathan Aspinall, makes his first appearance at the event, and also goes straight in as a seed, as a result of his impressive semi-final berth at the 2019 World Championship, and his maiden PDC major in Minehead. He becomes the first seeded player on debut since Raymond van Barneveld in 2007.

A man to be avoided by the seeds will surely be Poland’s Krzysztof Ratajski, who topped the ProTour rankings with several impressive Players’ Championship wins this year, and the ‘Polish Eagle’ knows how to do it on the stage also, having lifted the Winmau World Masters in 2017.

Three time BDO world champion, Glen Durrant, caps an excellent 2019 so far since coming through Q-School with a debut appearance at the Winter Gardens.

You have to go back to 1994 for the inaugural staging of the now famous competition, which produced a non-household winner in the USA’s Larry Butler. ‘The Bald Eagle’ stunned number one seed and tournament favourite, Dennis Priestley, 16-12, and remains the only American winner of a PDC major.

Mexborough menace Priestley would go on to lose the first three finals of the Matchplay, with Phil Taylor triumphing in 1995, and Peter Evison impressively coming through the field in 1996.

1997 would, again, belong to Taylor, but 1998 and 1999 saw a ‘Prince of Style’ crowned in Rod Harrington, who won back-to-back titles, both in overtime, in 19-17 wins against Ronnie Baxter and Peter Manley respectively.

The 2000’s belonged to ‘The Power’ who scooped a mind-blowing further fifteen World Matchplay trophies between 2000 and 2017. Taylor also nailed the first live TV nine-darter in a 2002 win against Chris Mason, pocketing £100,000 for his efforts.

There were only four other winners of the event during 2000-2018, with Colin Lloyd sealing the 2005 edition with a magical 170 checkout against John Part. James Wade hammered perennial bridesmaid, Terry Jenkins, 18-7, to lift the 2007 title, and Michael van Gerwen enjoyed 2015 and 2016 victories in Blackpool.

The most poignant edition would come to be the 2017 tournament, where Phil Taylor won the event in his final appearance before retiring later in the year. He was an unthinkable 20/1 betting outsider, and had to come through Gerwyn Price, Raymond van Barneveld, Michael van Gerwen (16-6), Adrian Lewis, and finally, Peter Wright in a thumping 18-8 triumph to complete a fairytale win.

The current holder is Gary Anderson, who took last year’s title with a dramatic, extra-time 21-19 win against Mensur Suljovic, with both men averaging well over 100.
