A Finer Point of View...Human beings are tools ofknowledge. Every one of us wants tolearn more and sharpen our intellect. We should constantly be takingadvantage of our freedom to learn, tosaturate our minds with matter thatencourages our usefulness. It is theresponsibility of those withknowledge to share their lifeexperiences and information withothers. This cycle of sharedknowledge promotes advancements, cures diseases, invents comfort, andprovides relief. We are dependent onknowledge to survive, and the sourceof intellectual growth is education. The chain of education is lengthy, one that unravels quickly withoutconstant communication andwidespread participation. In both thescholastic and professional arenas, the lack of support for education is aguarantee of failure in the future. TheIndustrial Diamond Association isdeveloping an educational platformfrom which its members can learnmore about the diamond industryand apply this knowledge to theirprofessional responsibilities. Thiseducational platform will provide arenewed understanding ofequipment, applications, productsand value. Superabrasive CertificateCourses are meant to promote thecycle of informing, sharing andapplying while derailing the forces of“me too” and low-valuecommoditization. No individual cansurmount this hurdle, but the powerof an association can halt and reversethis trend. Superabrasivemanufacturers and distributors havefallen victim to these forces; all thewhile their product is one of themost reliable and effective materialsin the world. If ever there was aproduct that exclaims its features andbenefits outright, it is superabrasives. In order to end this cycle thatundervalues our products, theindustry must depend on seekingeducation and sharing knowledge. Alucid understanding of the value ofsuperabrasives and their functions inthe industry must be appreciated byeach person involved: sales person,

purchasing manager, engineer, operator, end user, and owner. Anorganized and motivated associationcan seek out sound informationregarding superabrasives andcommunicate this knowledge to allparties benefiting from the industry. The superior capability ofsuperabrasives depends on ourknowledge, not legal tender, notquantity, not hand shakes. Yourparticipation in the upcomingSuperabrasive Certificate Course isparamount in appreciating thebenefits, features and uses ofsuperabrasives. Contributions to thecourses through white papers, speaking engagements, field studyreports, employee attendance orevent hosting are encouraged, andattendance is a guarantee ofintellectual proliferation that ismeant to be shared with and appliedin your professional domain. Thesuccesses of superabrasives areseeded in education, and it is ourresponsibility to promote their valueand help to grow a healthy industryfor all segments of the value chain.Strive to educate yourself andcontribute to the learning of otherson a daily basis, whether thatknowledge concerns diamonds ordragons. Knowledge is power.

Sincerely,

Martin Deakins, PresidentIndustrial Diamond Association of America

A Rising Tide Raises All ShipsWhen sales and use of superabrasives improve it helps all companies in the industry. Our recentINTERTECH 2008 held this past May was another success and as such was a success for theentire industry. Every two years the brightest and most innovative scientists, engineers andindustry leaders grace the stages of INTERTECH to present their finest offerings of new products, new applications and advancements in technology. It was here we first heard of many theproducts that today are the mainstays in production lines for automotive and aerospace. We alsolearn of basic crystal improvements and coatings that are helping to change the face ofconstruction applications, stone processing and the ever-important highway, dam and bridgerenovations and restoration. From the far reaches of space in satellites and shuttles, to thedepths of the ocean in communication and exploration, diamond and other “superabrasives”continue to touch every part of our lives. Icontinue to be amazed every time I sit inone of the presentations and listen to whatis new or what has been rethought for anew approach to an established process orproduct. What may have been forgotten orshelved five or ten years ago is nowreintroduced and finding success inanother way. Forums like INTERTECH inthe Americas, Diamond At Work in Europeand the 5th ZISC in Asia showcase theglobal research and applications for ourindustry. Through these well-staged andprofessionally executed conferences, attendees learn and share. Theseconferences are a way to promote the useof superabrasive materials and giveattendees an insightful view of what maybe the next generation abrasive orapplication. One of my favorite terms is“cross-over technology” referring toapplications or use in one industry thatcan be adapted to another industry. We seethis in the use of superalloys, metal matrixcomposites, bi-metals and other materialsused in aerospace that are now makinggreat inroads in automotive. Drillingproducts, once only used on bits for oiland gas exploration are being used onchainsaws for stone and concrete. Cubicboron nitride, a material that wassupposed to only be applied on ferrousmaterials is being electro-plated and usedas a milling tool for aluminum! CVDdiamond is applied in woodworking andin intricate wear part configurations andsaw diamond is finding success in wiresawing steel pipes beneath the ocean.Maybe most importantly, the medical fieldis using diamond in everything from opticsto prosthetics and joint replacements… atrue reflection of improving the quality oflife. The limitations of yesterday are beingbrushed aside and new applications arefinding success from one industry to thenext. As these new products andapplications are shared at the majorconferences, others are taking those ideasand expanding them around the world inever increasing and creative ways. As theuse of superabrasives grows and morepeople are educated and become aware ofthe possibilities, all companies involved intheir use share in this success … a risingtide raises all ships!

The general membership welcomed this dedicated group of Officersand Directors and expressed their appreciation that this group has accepted the role of leading theAssociation. In addition to reviewing the general business activities of the Association and settinggoals and objectives, the IDA Members were given excellent presentations on the economy with ananalysis by Adam York an Economist for Wachovia Bank plus had an interactive discussion withKelly Phou, Chief, Collections Coordination Branch, Foreign Trade Division for the US CensusBureau on compliance issues and concerns with conflict diamonds. Long time industry colleagueNorm Rohr introduced a project he will be working on this year to trace the “Industry Family Tree”that will identify companies that have made the diamond industry what it is today and pinpoint wherethey have gone or where they are now. The Annual Meeting was capped off by a splendid banquetwhere all the members and guests joined in an excellent evening of social gathering andconversation. At the Banquet, Bill Tully was given the Presidents Award for exceptional service andcontribution to the Association and E. Louis Kapernaros was given an Honorary LifetimeMembership in the IDA. Lou was the General Manager of GE Specialty Materials Department in theearly years when “Man-Made” diamond first made its mark on the manufacturing scene. Lou directed “SMD” when many of the first in “superhard”materials were invented and introduced including Cubic Boron Nitride, Polycrystalline Diamond, Polycrystalline CBN, drill diamond, polycrystalline wire dies, crystal coatings and many other innovative and revolutionary materials. Lou was credited with being a catalyst in themajor growth of these materials throughout the world. Tanya Fratto, current CEO & President of Diamond Innovations, the company that is thedescendent of SMD presented the award on behalf of the IDA and reflected on her conversations with former colleagues of Mr. Kapernaros andhow they respected and held him in high regard. Lou’s Lifetime Membership Award read in part: “For distinguished service and leadership in theresearch, market development and sales of superabrasives resulting in the global success and growth of the entire diamond industry.” With the2008 Annual Meeting and banquet being held on the eve of INTERTECH 2008 many of Lou’s former employees, colleagues and other dignitariesfrom the industry were present to honor Lou and take part in the festivities.

GATEWAY SAFETY’SSOUND SERIES™EARMUFFS:

INDEPENDENTLY TESTED FOR PROVENPROTECTION LEVELSJuly 8, 2008 – Dangerous noise exposure can cause a temporarydecline in hearing, or a ringing in the ears that eventually goes away

after a short time. Daily exposure to such loud noises can lead to irreversible, incurablehearing loss. The good news is that noise-induced hearing loss is 100 percentpreventable by using proper hearing protection. Gateway Safety’s Sound Series Earmuffs, have been tested by an independent NVLAP-accredited laboratory and assigned a NoiseReduction Rating, or NRR. The National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program(NVLAP) is a voluntary, fee-supported program to accreditlaboratories that are found competent to perform specifictests or calibrations, or types of tests or calibrations. TheNRR measures the earmuff’s ability to block out noise orreduce the intensity of sound, and the rating is stated indecibels. MEISTER ABRASIVES UNVEILS NEWHYBRID DIAMOND DRESSING TECHNOLOGY

North Kingstown, RI– Meister Abrasives hasintroduced a remarkable

new hybrid bonding technology for rotary diamond productsused to dress CBN grinding wheels. The company’s newhDD (hybrid diamond dressing) tools combine thetoughness of metal bonding with the natural porosity of avitrified bond structure, comparable to porosity found invitrified CBN grinding wheels. The many advantages of thisnew combination include more efficient dressing cycles thatlead to more consistent CBN grinding wheel performance, increased intervals between dresses resulting in longergrinding wheel life, improved longevity of the dressing toolitself, and total elimination of the need to change out thedressing tool for re-conditioning. One of the secrets of thisnew technology is a proprietary manufacturing process thatboth mechanically and chemically bonds the diamondparticles within the tool to insure that they will be heldsecurely. As a result, metal posts or “bridges” that attach tothe diamond crystals in the bonding matrix can be slender, allowing for large pores to be naturally distributed betweenthe crystals. The improved porosity means that hDD rotarydressing tools are freer cutting, carrying more material andheat away from the CBN wheel with every revolution. Thiscreates a better surface condition on the CBN wheel anddoes it faster. More efficient dressing means that CBN

grinding wheels last longer, because less superabrasiveneeds to be removed, less often,to return the wheel to optimalcondition. For information, contact: Bruce Northrup,[email protected]
